the reason why starting with the drums is better is because it not only let's you determine the bpm early but gives you an idea of the rhythm. Even if you don't start with the drums, you must always have a beat pattern or rhythm in mind
Starting with drums limits you cause the drums just like chords determines the genre and direction of the song but unlike chords once you start with a certain drum pattern you have to commit to that style everything has to respond to it..
The real benefit of starting with drums is you get to determine your bpm, Metro even said this in the video. Like what I do (and what Metro does also) is I drop 16 hihats and then start scrolling through the bpms until I find one that I like. I'll even close my eyes during this. The bpm is the backbone of the beat, and people underestimate this. You can be feeling one bpm one day, and a different one another day. It influences how your beats turn out an incredible amount.
ive been doing it with drums first for years. i felt it really helped me when creating beats. it keeps me organized and on point almost the same way a metronome would during production,
ive been producing for 12 years and ive never started a beat with drums until yesterday. I really liked the way that beat came out so ima keep trying this method.
I used to always start with the drums as a beginner .then I switched to the melody Then I realized my beats are 10 times hotter when I start with the drums! To each his own I guess... Just find your own sweet spot listen to your self and make music that YOU feel . Shout out from France one love ❤
Heard this, and instantly applied it to my mixes. Never looked back. I'm good off production, sometimes I start beat first and sometimes melodies. But when I mix, it's essential to start off with the best, otherwise it won't hit.
Agree. I feel like Hip-Hop and some genres of EDM are rhythm-based. So it's a pretty natural to start from drums. Chord progression is developed with respect to drum rhythm. Melody and counter-melody are such parts of composition that has no "obligations" for any other parts (can even step out the scale and play with chromatic moves) - so they needs just slight connection with rhythm part. Still there are times that you just can't start with drums, because you got some melody in your head)
Starting with drums almost limits you it determines the direction and style but starting with chords you can easily switch things up, you need to get the vibe before anything else and drums doesn't really give you the vibes cause drum patterns in many genres are the same what makes tracks unique is the chords and melody get those two right and everything just flows like a river. The drum pattern you'll make when starting with chords or melodies is very different from what you'd make when starting with drums cause when you play those first chords or melodies you immediately start picturing everything drum patterns don't give you the mood especially if you're doing rock or trap, genres that reuse same old patterns and rhythms.
I made a EDM type beat on garage band just for fun it actually came out really good, I tried making a rap beat on GarageBand but it’s a lot harder for some reason
@DavidKingonYT naw bro busy been doing this do ur home work, people grew up to busy from 15 probably damn near in they 30s hard work pay off, Subs come & GO...... crazy talk learnt a lot from OG u can't speak like that
“If your only tool is a hammer, you’ll look at every problem as a nail” … IMO learn to focus on whats more important per song you are doing. Sometimes ill do beat first if thats the focus, or melody first , etc. especially if u do different genres of music
I was in drumline for 4 years and played snare so coming from some experience, your 808 pattern is NOT a triplet. Its called a dotted quarter note. Fire beat but like cmon
My bad bro. I have some background in playing instruments and reading sheet music so I understand what you’re saying. But I have to convey what I’m saying to folks who may not have that background, so I use simpler terms. I just so happened to call it something that has a different meaning
Starting with the drums isn’t a cheat code, it’s literally how every song is made… if you’re a band the engineer records the drum track and builds off of that, unless they are recording as a live band. In hip hop or pop music you record the drum parts and lay on top.
The clicking method ain't it for YOU! You can't tell people how to make beats tho.. I've been cooking for 2 decades haven't gotten all my placements for Clicking. At the end of the day, nobody cares how you make the beat, as long as it sounds good
@@johnwatkins1944It’s also funny to me they’re so against clicking and then recommended a keyboard instead of a drum pad. If they’re going to be a purest at least do it right lol.
The fact u made video about starting beats with drums like its something that wad never done before is dumb, I know plenty of producer who start with the beat, it's the backbone, I always do it first

Exactly
You can get a bpm just as easily from a record sample... oh that's right none of you actually find samples anymore except from the internet.

I love that method and it works quite well.

Very well put
I always start with my drums first because if I start with the melody it sounds like R&B sometimes K-pop 😅
it's the opposite for me. my melodies be sounding like trap 😂
That happened to me
Crazy how I prefer starting with the melody. My boss once told me to start with them drums but it is what it is 😂

Ewwww this is crazzzzyyyy♾️
I just do whatever comes to my mind when i listen a instrument or one shot
I do bass and kick first cause they are my foundation that nothing else will be allowed to interfere with... not even the rest of the drums.

Yea yea, hard man
Yea I'm still melody first at best I might do a high hat. If I start with drums I end up changing them anyway.
GOAT 🐐
Depends… if I’m flipping a sample on hardware drums first off top. My own chords then hi hats first cause I don’t care for metronome then chords

How do I make a 808 like that in Ableton
When u were doing the hihat placing wha grid size u using?
For the basic placement Line setting. For the rolls 1/3 step

False. Inspiration can spark from anything. Limiting yourself to drums as a rule of thumb to start all beats is foolish.
nothing authentic really , just sounds like you wanted to make a metro boomin beat
the beat is good the clicking method is not it, get a midi board
