Great video! Would love to hear both with triple flanged hoops. It's really close but I would pick the ludwig

When doing a video like this why not spend the $30 and put the same (new) head on each. The Ludwig's head is dead...you can hear it choke. Like comparing two steaks one is a one-day-old leftover and another spent a week in the fridge...just make 2 fresh ones if you are going to compare them. $30...tune them to the resonant frequency of the shell and then compare them again....my two cents.

Hello! Is the gretsch bell brass easy to tune? I’ve heard it’s a pain to tune!

The easiest snare. From super low to super high. Some wires will not work with it though.

    • @DenOfTimbsllc

It’s not the snare itself, but the hoops, because die-cast hoops are much heavier then normal hoops so it takes more time to get it in tune.

The Gretch Bell Brass makes most snares seem inadequate. Every time I play mine I honestly consider selling off most of my snares. But having a variety of snares is the collectible aspect of being a drummer. I’m actually considering getting a Yamaha Recording Custom Brass 14 x 6.5 as they’re every bit as good as the Black Beauties.

Both great drums! The Gretsch has warmer (lower) overtones compared to the BB. Listen closely as each drum decays, listen for the final overtone, you can definitely hear a difference. Neither is better, just different. Great video!

At that tuning I prefer the Gretsch. I'd love to hear a comparison at different tunings. Drums of similar size made of different materials definitely have resonances that are better are some frequencies and less impressive at others. Need both of these.

I own both drums and I can say that the gretsch does everything the black beauty will do and more. It is the best snare I’ve ever played and owned hands down. And I dont say that lightly, the black beauty is an incredible snare.

did you have a chance to compare the bell brass with the phosphor bronze? i still can not make the choise between the two. on one hand posph bro tends to have more bottom end and seems to be a bit closer to TAMA BB. but it sounds more hollow and even cispy comparing with bell brass. what do you think?

You have to play a cast bronze snare in person to appreciate it fully. I say if you have a chance to get one wether it's a Tama, Gretch, Sonor or have a custom shell built by Duluth or the other artisan cast bronze builders don't pass it up. Just get one if you can!

Both sound great! Would use both for different applications. The Black Beauty's thinner shell will enable it to take on much lower-pitched tunings vs the Bell Brass. I would use the bell brass for music that needs the snare to establish more body in the mix.

From the information from Gretsch, their bell brass snares come with the 42 strand snare wires. Not sure if this particular one has that. But after listening to lots of these bell brass and bell bronze videos, and having a Ludwig COB myself for years.... if a metal drum needs 42 snare wires, something is not right. Just my opinion.

I'm looking for a new snare for my Gretsch Broadkaster. I absolutely love the toms and the kick, but I am having a hard time falling in love with the snare. It's "fine", but I think I need a metal shell snare to complete the kit. I have a handful of different snares, but I'm lacking the "Pang!" of the two drums in the video. There are just too many choices.

I'm a hard hitter and none of my 12 snares (or drums) stay in tune. There is only two products that really work for that. I tried pretty much everything on the market. The Pearl Spin Tight Tension Rod is a marvel of engineering and works almost perfectly. Almost because the inner red srew will unscrew slowly but it gives you the time to secure it before the real tension rod unscrew. You can keep your tuning!! I still feel it's the best product out there. The only problem is that you will have to spend thousands (with an s and no exaggeration) if you want to change all your tension rods like i did. My problem with detuning was so bad that i was ready to pay. My life changed and now i spend more time playing and not always tune before i play. The Tight Screw product is pretty good but not as good as Spin Tight. It will still move a bit. The best product if you don't want to sell your car to get rid of the problem. I use Tight Screw where the Spin Tight doesn't fit like my DW's.
