  • “Even silence speaks” (געשװיגן הײסט אױך גערעדט, Geshvign heyst oykh geredt) is a film attempt to contrast two images:
First is Christmas Market shown in the evening. Colorful lights, happy music and people enjoying Ferris wheel ride are the main themes of this cheerful sequence.
Second is next day in the morning. In the emptiness everything is closed, only piles of trash are present. As it turns out, Christmas Market is located directly next to a low wall (1:51 & 2:10) made of destroyed matzevahs (Jewish gravestones).
Shot during December 2023 entirely on Arri Arriflex 35mm 2c film camera, with single 50mm lens (Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon f/2 50mm). Color sequence was captured with Eastman Kodak 5219 500T Vision3 film (60m/200ft). Black and white one was shot with expired ORWO NP55 negative (40m/135ft).
ENC-2 color negative processing: ANDEC Cinegrell Filmtechnik, Berlin
ORWO 1180 black and white negative processing: Analog Bydgoski
    4K scanning: RetroCut, Hamburg

Thank you! For daylight footage I used Sekonic L-398, and for night Gossen Polysix.

@@ANALOGBYDGOSKI I'd love to make a movie using an Arriflex 35BL. I've never seen an Arriflex before but looking at them I bet they are heavy and built like tanks. There's just something about 35mm that is so beautiful.

@@KylesDigitalLab 35BL was considered light enough to be silent handheld camera. But when you will think about additional sound recorder and some lightning kit, then you will find yourself in need of small film crew.

@@ANALOGBYDGOSKI Yeah you always need a crew with an audio recorder when you're doing a sound film. That's why television stations went from 16mm to videotape cameras like Umatic in the late 70s/early 80s

Great shots! Is it still possible to buy 200ft rolls of 35mm Kodak Vision here in Europe?

Thanks! Yes, just ask sellers offering Vision3 films for photo use. Usually they don’t mind to cut and bulk load 200ft of film.

How do you develop 35mm film at home? 16mm seems easy but 35mm on the other hand...

Same as 16mm: I use big (30,5m/100ft) Lomo processing tank. I cut one exposed roll into 2 small ones (30m each) in the darkroom. Then process one by another. After drying I splice them back with Arri splicer. That’s all.
