Whenever you upload, I get so overexcited and I have a reflex of instantly liking your videos specifically. It's amazing how you try something new, and your not trying to be the best. You don't boast like most youtubers, but you do everything for fun:)
So basically the ink spreads out into the water, and the soap breaks the bond of the water, but it only happens in the area the soap is in, so since the water away from the soap still has a bond, the ink is pulled towards the water with the bond, this only happens at the surface and not below it If I got something wrong, or missed something, tell me in the replies
I recently discovered this guy, and I find his videos super relaxing and inspiring. It's amazing because the things he does are theoretically things anyone could try themselves!

Water is a polar molecule. Which basically means it has a positive charge in one end and a negative in the other end. This is very helpful when they bind together because it helps create surface tension. This surface tension can be broken by soap because basically a soap molecule is hydrophobic in one end and hydrophilic in the other (one end loves water the other repels it) this is helpful because it can attract both water and oil as a cleaning agent. But it also means it can break the water molecules apart and push then away from each other. And my guess is the ink is hydrophobic and shares some of the same properties as oil in this scenario. Which makes it float on the water and then is pushed away when the soap molecule interacts with it.
You look so happy doing that ! It's a pleasure to watch even if I probably never experiment myself (or maybe I will, it seems fun, I don't know but I definetely will watch your other videos)
dude i found this channel a few months ago through the dandelions video and i just now noticed how much it's channel's grown since then!! super exciting to see 👏👏
the soap removes the surface tension of the water. You can demonstrate this by floating a needle on a bowl of water and one drop of soap will make it instantly sink
Connor, I found your dirt all video a few moths ago, really inspired me! I wish I could do it but I can’t because of issues I need to do, but now I can do it! Thanks! 😊

such a cool effect! i remember doing something similar, but as a science experiment (less artistic lol) from school that included black pepper and the dish soap on a q-tip. the outcome is the black pepper spreading out just as it does here!
I just found you while scrolling in my homepage, I saw the video when you tried to grow tomatoes out of a subway sandwhich and after that Im now subbed and watching your vids. Im now in love with your content 😂
okay for the DIY paper, i think if you lower it into the water and then somehow get a mesh or something under it, you can get it out without destroying the paper
I love the final results! It reminds me of a holographic look without the color. My family does a lot of woodworking and let me make designs on the wood sometimes. You just inspired my next idea!😊😊 Thank you!
Great work brother 😉🤘🙏⛩️. Its the original Japanese version of hydro dipping. I do this with all kinds of enamels and oils in a tub and customise all of my face masks this way. Results are unique and awesome . Love it ! Cheers mate.
i used to do this to paint my nails XDDDDDDD it was so much fun making weird shapes with different nail polish colors! Never actually thought about making things like t-shirts with this technique! thanks for the idea! haha
The DIY paper will probably work if it's thicker and maybe has more fibres in it to hold it together. The key difference between DIY paper and commercial is the polishing that commercial gets to make it more resistant to water (and ink, actually)
I wonder if for the DIY paper, you could put some kind of mesh (like a cooling rack) into the water before you start dipping the ink in the water, so then when you want to take the paper out you can lift up the mesh
1. Surface Tension Suminagashi relies on the interaction between inks and water. Surface tension allows the ink to float on the surface of water instead of mixing with it. The ink used in suminagashi typically has lower surface tension than water, so it spreads out on the water’s surface, creating thin films of ink. The high surface tension of water contains these ink layers into patterns. 2. Ink Composition Traditional suminagashi uses sumi ink (made from soot) and water-based inks. The ink’s chemical composition affects how it interacts with the water surface. The subtle addition of surfactants (soapy substances) or oils in the ink reduces surface tension further, helping create distinct swirls and ripples. 3. Fluid Dynamics The way ink spreads and moves on the water is influenced by the fluid dynamics between the ink and water. A slight breath, breeze, or even hand movement near the water surface can create ripples that spread the ink, forming intricate patterns. This movement is a result of both viscous flow (thicker liquids flow slowly) and how fluids of different densities (water and ink) interact. 4. Capillary Action When the ink reaches the edges of the container or when tools (such as brushes or combs) are dipped into the water, capillary action can cause the ink to move along the surface or cling to the edges, contributing to the designs. 5. Paper Absorption When the marbled pattern is transferred onto paper, the absorbency of the paper plays a role in how the ink adheres. Higher absorbency results in faster transfer and possibly more intense designs, while low-absorbent papers can create softer effects. Paper fibers wick up the ink and water, leaving a permanent imprint of the floating design. 6. Chaos Theory Although artists can influence the patterns by controlling the ink, tools, and movement, there is an element of unpredictability due to the chaotic nature of fluid dynamics. Tiny changes in the environment or ink placement can result in vastly different patterns.
Each time I watch your vids I notice things in the background and i'm like he made that in the other vid 🤯🤯🤯. Keep up the great work. Ps. You should add a birdhouse to the studio so when you work you can hear the birds chirping
hey, i think it might transfer to DIY paper, you just need to add a mesh submerged under the container then use it to lift the DIY paper once the transfer has done.

The DIY paper will probably work if it's thicker and maybe has more fibres in it to hold it together. The key difference between DIY paper and commercial is the polishing that commercial gets to make it more resistant to water (and ink, actually)

The “Dude, Breath.” painting in the back is amazing I need that
I just recently got it! It’s awesome 😄 from a brand caller pointer and pine
1. Surface Tension
Suminagashi relies on the interaction between inks and water. Surface tension allows the ink to float on the surface of water instead of mixing with it.
The ink used in suminagashi typically has lower surface tension than water, so it spreads out on the water’s surface, creating thin films of ink. The high surface tension of water contains these ink layers into patterns.
2. Ink Composition
Traditional suminagashi uses sumi ink (made from soot) and water-based inks. The ink’s chemical composition affects how it interacts with the water surface.
The subtle addition of surfactants (soapy substances) or oils in the ink reduces surface tension further, helping create distinct swirls and ripples.
3. Fluid Dynamics
The way ink spreads and moves on the water is influenced by the fluid dynamics between the ink and water. A slight breath, breeze, or even hand movement near the water surface can create ripples that spread the ink, forming intricate patterns.
This movement is a result of both viscous flow (thicker liquids flow slowly) and how fluids of different densities (water and ink) interact.
4. Capillary Action
When the ink reaches the edges of the container or when tools (such as brushes or combs) are dipped into the water, capillary action can cause the ink to move along the surface or cling to the edges, contributing to the designs.
5. Paper Absorption
When the marbled pattern is transferred onto paper, the absorbency of the paper plays a role in how the ink adheres. Higher absorbency results in faster transfer and possibly more intense designs, while low-absorbent papers can create softer effects.
Paper fibers wick up the ink and water, leaving a permanent imprint of the floating design.
6. Chaos Theory
Although artists can influence the patterns by controlling the ink, tools, and movement, there is an element of unpredictability due to the chaotic nature of fluid dynamics. Tiny changes in the environment or ink placement can result in vastly different patterns.
Woah this was the best explanation yet!! Very thorough and well said, thank you!😄🙌🏻🙌🏻
I indeed did it on fabric and it worked pretty well. You shouldn't water down the ink. btw your river-nagashi was amazing!
