Overall good information, however you completely skipped over voltage and gearing. Smaller pinion gear will help make up for increased weight and increased KV to make up for the torque difference. Also a 2000KV motor will have more RPM on 4S than a 3500KV motor on 2S etc etc. That is one of the reasons you see a lower KV rating on a physically larger motor.
So let me ask you a difficult question no one seem to be able to answer. I have a jlb 21101 with a 3670 2500kv motor and 120a esc. I installed huge 3.8 belted badlands and motor gets too hot. Agree with the others that mentioned skipping other important factors. Gearing, how many cells, and tire diameter are just as important as selecting the right motor. Case and point, I have that Mamba 5700 in my old school Associated RC10B4. Gearing is too short however, and the car not only loves to flip on its back, but also rip the tires off of the rim, yet the power band peaks out way too early so the car isn't nearly as fast as it could be.

Thanks I deliberately didn't mention batteries or esc as the video was solely about choosing a motor, you can choose the best batteries and esc in the world but if the motor's the wrong one? Where I'm coming from is like this, you take a motor from a smart car, double the size of the fuel injectors, feed it on 100 octane fuel, but if you take it and put it in Ferrari it's still going to be as slow as a smart car. Hope that makes sense? I've done a video on choosing batteries before but you've made me think maybe I should do an updated version. I do appreciate the time you've taken to give feedback but I kept this one specifically about motors.
Sounds good. Thanks for the reply. When I said batteries, it was more about the number of cells or voltage rather than quality. For example, that Traxxas 3500kv probably wouldn't last long running on 6s if it ran at all. That 2200kv may not even work on 2s. And if someone wants to run 8s, they'll need to choose a motor that is compatible. That's why the batteries matter in my opinion.

Save your money boys!!!! Get the mamba X. I had a sidewinder...for two days before upgrading it to the mamba X. All I did was waste money as the sidewinder (3?) just overheated all the time on 3S. Hope that helps you and axiomatic and saves you some money, I know the sidewinder is less $$'s and I thought 'save some money'. All I did was waste some as I then bought the mamba X. Any more info let me know. I could do a side by side comp if anyone was interested?
just burned an 60A ESC with a 3900KV motor mounted on a converted T-Maxx 3.3... Watching this makes me think i burned the esc because the motor drew alot of current trying to push the car in low revolutions... The motor wasn't hot though... I will try replacing both to a 2050KV motor with a 120A ESC...
Simon that latter combo sounds a much better bet, gut feel is that your original 3900kv (which was probably good) simply drew too much current, I don't claim to know it all but when I cock it up I do like to pass on the knowledge so others don't! I fried two brushless esc's in the snow in NJ when the snow put too much load on the wheels then motor, then the esc! Two esc fires in the snow within two weeks!
It's good you like it, not so good you think it's in 720p! (is that down to viewing bandwidth? Just a thought). This one was shot on my Canon SX60 in FHD1080 as are nearly all the static interior videos ...... All the new outdoor films are shot in the main in 4K on a gopro 5. Not sure if gopro do a 4K UHD version as yet? :-)
Driftomaniac I just checked the available resolution, 720p is max that YT is allowing. I noticed with my uploads that if I submit at 1080 then YT reduces it to 720, so I now upload at 2k for the videos to come out as 1080. Odd though that I did experiment yesterday with an upload, 4k video's don't get compressed to 2k.
I would post that question in the traxxas rustler page on facebook, the guys there will give you a faster and better answer than me! There's where I personally would ask that. Don't worry about it not being the exact same car as similar weight and power
don't think I would base my motor choice on this video I think you should always buy a ESC when you buy a motor that are compatible from the manufacturer. the manufacturer is your best choice for information about choosing a motor sometimes your local hobby shop may be able to help you but most of them don't have the information they're just sales people
Pop I think 99% of people buying a motor do the opposite and don't buy a motor from the manufacturer of the car. Otherwise hobbywing and castle would be out of business. It's about freedom of choice and if you want to go faster then chances are you are going to have to go with 3rd party. I do agree on taking the LHS advice with a pinch of salt though.
Anybody know a good motor for ah Redcat blackout XTE ? I’m running it on 3s -The stock motor is okay but it does seem to be ah little on the warm 🔥 side lol I want to throw a bigger pinion that I have but the motor is already kinda hot . I never had it cut off on me but I am skeptical 🤨 🤣⚙️lol lls.
I want to hit over 90 with my 4x4 vxl ruster with 8th buggy wheels and street tires. The rotating mass would be less than the stock tires. I want a 4s motor and esc. I have no idea what to get. I would run around a 23/54 gear.
You could fit the traxxas maxx 4s motor or an arrma 4s motor and esc, however an arrma typhon would be much better and far more stable and do well over 90. You can modify a rustler to go fast but 90 is going to end in tears. I love traxxas but arrma typhon would suit your needs better

Ah no worries, my parents still live up in Derbyshire. How are you liking the erevo? I hear the stock was somewhat lagging behind here, although some people are struggling to get them, I'd no problem getting that and the UDR. Make sure to join the erevo vxl 2.0 group on facebook. I'd also recommend the MX38 badlands tires (I've a video with them on test). Also if/when the servo fails I've done a video on a cheap upgrade for it. Another brit did the upgrade last week and the servos will still under 20gbp with the tax. The replacement ones I'm using are metal geared, 20kg & waterproof - about 4x more power than stock. Feel free to send me a PM to the driftomaniacs facebook page.
Driftomaniacs So far I’m loving it although first time out managed to sheer off the front part of the centre shaft, god knows how! Thanks for the advice on servos and tyres been looking at the mx38s they look awesome! What batteries would you recommend I’m currently running 2x 6000mah 25-50c and they get quite hot and ones starting to puff they’re nearly new too, would say a 45-90c battery be more suited? Thanks again and keep up the good work👍🏻
Sorry mate but you left a ton out of this video. The KV is almost a worthless metric. It just refers to the number of turns per pole. Brushed motors are rated in 'T' or turns of the wire per stator lobe, and brushless wires are rated in KV which relates directly to the number of wire turns per pole. Neither 'T' nor 'KV' speak to the output wattage of the motor, which is what you really need to know to select the correct motor. The reason your listless truck became a superstar is because for the size, brushless motors put out a LOT more wattage than brushed motors do. It is not the KV, it is the watts that make the difference, and the heavier your vehicle the more watts you need to drive it.
thanks for the feedback. This video was to help people make the right general choice, It wasn't designed to overcomplicate things......That's why it is what it is in terms of detail. Never in a model shop or hobby store have I heard anyone asking about the wattage output. Hence why it's not in this video. People just don't ask that. It would way overcomplicate a video like this, which I think you may have read into too much. Good comment though in terms of detail

Cheapest and fastest motor and esc for my e revo 1.0
Thanks for this video... any suggestions of a motor for a hobao vt drag car motor a heating to start with for 132 foot pulls
Put the 800 kv in the speed car and overgear it
Hi! Nice video. Can the I mount a hobbywing 4268 motor on axial scx10 2?? Does it have enough room to accommodate a 1/8 scale motor? Thanks!
You'd need to check with axial, who I don't work for....
@@DriftomaniacsRC
Thanks!
I’m gonna be getting my first castle system as soon as castle will finally restock there dang motors, been on a waiting list for 2 months now, about to say forget it n get another vxl system. Good info Richie
Amazon dude! I just got the 2850kv slate motor!
Axiomatic RC I’ve been trying to get the 3800kv sidewinder 4, I’ve been waiting for 2months now
Yeah you're right...I could only find a mamba X with a 3800kv on amazon at the moment
I could do a side by side comp if anyone was interested?
see my other comment on this thread
just burned an 60A ESC with a 3900KV motor mounted on a converted T-Maxx 3.3...
Two esc fires in the snow within two weeks!
sir, I really like your channel. But you really should upgrade to full HD. it's pretty blurry on 720p.
Agreed
i have a offbrand rc car and my motor broke what are some good brands to swap it
I have to say I'd be looking on amazon, I'd not worry about the brand of motor too much if it's an offbrand model. e.g. no need for a Castle motor.
What motor would go good with a bandit with a 4000 mah LiPo and 33 tooth pinion and a 76 gear spur.(castle creations)oh and the battery is three cell.
I would post that question in the traxxas rustler page on facebook, the guys there will give you a faster and better answer than me! There's where I personally would ask that. Don't worry about it not being the exact same car as similar weight and power
Driftomaniacs thank you for the info! That’s a new sub!
Will a 2950KV motor work in a 0.94kg buggy?
It would but I'd say that's a lot of power for something so light in weight
Driftomaniacs What about a 5200kv in a (less than 0.8kg) 4WD touring car?
What do i have to do to make my e revo 2.0 hit the 100mah mark
How can i make my e revo 2.0 go 100mah
How can i make my e revo. Go 100mah
don't think I would base my motor choice on this video I think you should always buy a ESC when you buy a motor that are compatible from the manufacturer. the manufacturer is your best choice for information about choosing a motor sometimes your local hobby shop may be able to help you but most of them don't have the information they're just sales people
Pop I think 99% of people buying a motor do the opposite and don't buy a motor from the manufacturer of the car.
I’m running it on 3s -The stock motor is okay but it does seem to be ah little on the warm 🔥 side lol
I want to throw a bigger pinion that I have but the motor is already kinda hot .
@@DriftomaniacsRC I will definitely check that out. I already have a bunch of Traxxas trucks and parts plus I get deals at shop costs. I have been looking into a few different brands as well. Appreciate the info.
Nice video. What is your opinion on a 4000kV motor in a Slash 4x4?
That should work well I would not go higher than that in kvs as that’s on the money for still having great acceleration
I have a design for my remote control wheeled robot, but I don't know it's weight, how do I start calculations for finding specs of battery and motors And other components.
Thank you
So I got a 5200 KV motor 2s in a Traxxas Slash 2 wheel drive what would be a good spur and pinion combo for that set up
Shane Copeland too high KV mate
Actually it's super fun on 4S
The E-Revo is 1/10 scale doesn't matter what it looks like
Can someone help me, I have a 1/10 HPI Jumpshot ST, i want it to be FAST, what are good 1/10 scale motors? and what other electronics do i have to upgrade also? i believe its Rear wheel drive
Castle creations sidewinder 4 is a good combo for rear wheel drive stadium trucks (waterproof brushless and cheap)
Or hobbywing max10 sct combo
Great video as always mate, just out of interest where are you from?
Thanks. UK originally
Driftomaniacs thought so, especially enjoying your videos here in Nottingham U.K as I’ve just bought an e-revo 2.0. Cheers
Thanks again and keep up the good work👍🏻
Sorry yes stock here is thin on the ground and so are spares, I’ve been waiting since April for my revo they cost £630-£690 here car alone!!
Good info
Nice info good to know thanks bro for sharing ...
I also want and upgrade for my X MAXX.
Hi there! So i've got a 1:10 buggy that weighs 1.4 kilo's, how many KV's should i get?
Less than 1500kv
What if i put the highest kv in a 2wd slash?
It all depends on the gearing and the weight of the car as well if you get it wrong the motor will struggle to make the power
So lower Kv for heavy vehicles
Love the info but the acoustics are so terrible in your room that I could barely understand what you were saying.
Brooo your audio. Love your vids mate but dannggggg
Okay when I play it back in imovie it sounds okay, then when I upload it in YT I test play it again.
💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿🔥👌🏿💯
How about stating the actual motor sizes? Sigh.. With is a blah brand motor? We are speaking on its size, right?
Sir, you've used a lot of words and haven't even showed us how to choose a motor or much of anything.
Maybe change the title because it's misleading.
Traxxas pffffft.....
