In this video I break down how do mega ships of 300-400 meters in length arrive at a port and dock at a berth. These man made giants crawl into port at slow speeds and its no easy task to move or spin them around within confined waters.

For a man who works at sea, you sure have an acute knowledge of memes.
We have internet on our ship.
Yeah I like his memes . And videos . I just signed up with SIU Unlicensed apprenticeship program and I'm waiting to go . So I just watch videos everyday
Welcome back from Davy Jone's Locker, Captain Jeff Sparrow..
Excellent topic well presented, as usual...fantastic photography & editing...thanks! Welcome back shipmate, you were very much missed!
It's been so long we thought you turned into pirate. What have you been doing?
pirating some extra $$ in somalia, now i am back 😂 Was just distracted by exams, then holiday season (Christmas, new year, chinese new year and general slacking)
JeffHK will you have a video about Somalia? I mean, the phrase “Somali Pirate” is in the American lexicon.
JeffHK Great! Can't wait for your new adventures and maritime awesome knowledge with beautiful shots. 新年快乐
i do have some footage of being skiffs coming near our ship in near gulf of aden, but still need more for a video. Perhaps after next ship
JeffHK So when will you probably upload the next video?
I'm waiting eagerly
I am a doctor why I am watching this video oh because it's very interesting and informative thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Doctor Ive had this mole on my butt for the past 3 1/2 years that is 1 cm in diameter and 2 cm of width. Its dark brown and the borders are curvy. I stay out in the sun all day and Ive had my tonsils taken out when I was a kid and I think that mayeb related. I smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day and have type 2 diabetes. Do you think you could tell me why I feel so depressed lately, I think some hydrocodone would help me.
Im a doctor too and I love huge ships and planes, I want to become a pilot. These videos are really fun with drone view we can appreciate how huge the ships are and how normal operations take place.
@joshua- Get a dermatological consultation to rule out melanoma.
babysdoc hi doctor i constantly spit green/yellow spit what to do? Aside from drinking alot of water?
For Comment Purposes A thick and dark yellow phlegm may be a sign of a viral or bacterial infection, sinus infection, or lower respiratory tract infection. Typically, this occurs when the immune system sends white blood cells, known as neutrophils, to the area of infection. These cells contain a green protein, which, when present in large quantities, turn the mucus into a greenish hue.
Joshua Perkings haha wtf
I've been a truck driver for 16 years and I'm sooooo bored with my job! Maritime looks so interesting! Railroading has my attention also, I love being on the go, I hate being in one spot too long so anything in cargo or transportation suits me. Thanks for your videos!
Another highly professional and interesting video Jeff. Hope your career continues to prosper.
I wonder if some day we'll all be able to say that we knew him back when...
It's very nice to see information about a subject where the person is in it. Thanks for sharing!
You're back. How excited I was to spot your video in my recommendations!
My interests are in photos, shipping. I am a volunteer running a mission to seafarers when they come in on a boat from the docks, they have an area where they can come and relax have refreshments, watch television,, read some papers and use the computer. This is a great video.
The king is back!
🙏🙏🙏
Really enjoying your videos. My dads a captain in fiji 🇫🇯 and I had the opportunity to take up maritime but unfortunately I chose otherwise. Now that iv watched a couple of your videos I understand why he wanted me to get into maritime. Thankyou. 🤙
I LOVE your videos; you put in sooo much effort in every video and I really like sailing myself and your videos made me want to go on such a ship and travel around with it.
yes. thank you Jeff HK for this. I live in a port city & one of my fave things is sitting on the river & watching the big ships come & go. After watching "Captain Phillips" over & over, I realize what you go through. thank you. we really L♡VE your videos! 😆
Lol at the intro! Altho it was NECESSARY
Great video, Jeff, thank you! The "valet parking" was funny. At the real-time ship approaching birth, I though of "three hours later", then you did something similar. You cracked me up!
Thanks for the great information and professional explanations!
Yes! I've missed your videos!
mouseandelephant me too. Great video!
Great vids man.. Been a seaman for a long time. Great for someone to accumulate the knowledge with the actual video aspect to share in a layman way to the non sailor. Excellent work sir
THE AGE OF LINES IS DRAWING TO ITS CLOSE! Now, the next generation of automated mooring is here: ua-cam.com/video/j21xlat5tzo/v-deo.html
Since years MoorMaster moors vessels in just 30 seconds and handles waves/wind/tide better than mooring lines. Now the next generation comes with a smaller footprint and faster installation allowing easy introduction at most berths across the world!
Wow, the difference between current mooring and Moor Master is very very large! Thank for posting Nicklas!
The future is autonomous vessels. That’s for sure. Can you imagine mooring lines on an autonomous ship? THERE IS NO ONE ON BOARD! MoorMaster NxG is here!
Hey it's been a while since your last episode! I'm a Chief Engineer and I also have my own channel for Seaman Vlogs. Although my topics are more on the lifestyle side like shore leave adventures but I do post a few job-related videos once in a while. I just finished a 7 month contract onboard and now I'm on my vacation. I'm glad you're back!
2:21 are you on the OOCL Hong Kong now? If so CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! That’s my dream ship that I really hope to work on
I love your videos! I just wanted to encourage you to make more. I find them really fascinating!
Here...Here...I concur.
Jeff, you are a breath of fresh air on these types of videos. I have been trying to learn things about shipping for weeks now, but NOBODY gives the information as clear and as simple as 'you' do.
Thank you.
Good to see you back. I look forward to your stuff and it's been a very long time...
“Sir, The ports to small we can’t dock the ship!”
“This is impossible Captain!”
“Negative it’s necessary.”
*docking Intensifies*
Also I know this was posted like a year ago still gonna comment for the good vid.
Love the humor in this video! Informational and entertaining. Wish you could upload more frequently
Been waiting on this like it's Mardi grad. Great content love it
Thanks for coming back
Iam very happy to see your video
JeffHK - these are great! I know you don't get to see a lot of it, but I'd be curious how terminal ops work - once the can is off the boat, the stacking, out gate, etc - also what's the differences between automated and non-automated ports with regard to turn time and speed.
Seriously bro ....what took you soo long. Loved it as usual and the wait is worth it...
Long time...yo
What a good video. It"s very important the mooring and berthing, because that will be the day to day to arrive and leave the port, and how important it"s that the ship does not depart from the port of loading.
OUR LORD IS BACK!!!!
This is infinitely more interesting than the drivel on TV.
From 12,000 subscribers to 132,000 is less than one year.
Now that is impressive!
Thank you for the detailed explanation along with the eye full video
Yesterday I was wondering "wtf has happened to JeffK" and then the very next day you post a video. Awesome!
Just wanted to message you about any new content coming soon from you. Still rocking dude! Great topic clearly presented, beautifully photographed! Don't forget about us, no wonder that the other guys in the comment section love this channel as much as me! And in the meantime enjoy your work!
Who needs to study nautic in an university if you have Jeff?
Du auch?
Ich spiele mit dem Gedanken daran Nautik zu studieren, weis aber nicht on mir das Studium überhaupt taugen würde :/
Yeah ! You're back. Awesome video as usual ! Thanks for it...
It's good to know that you're back @jeffhk, 'been waiting for your upload ! More uploads!!
This is my fav channel i love ships
Was checking your channel a couple weeks ago, Hadn't seen any new content. Was worried! Glad to know you're doing alright! And didn't stop your amazing content work!
Good to see you back! Your videos are interesting and calming to some degree. Keep it up.
I'm a Naval Architect and this brings memories of my initial 1 year as a cadet (Nautical Science) before changing course... Very informative video. Kudos
another amazing video was watching a ship birth this week and noted all the lines
Hey Jeff, love your videos! I know this is weird but I wonder if there is any occasion where you need to moor one ship to another? And if there is a scenario to dock/connect two ships together, what would be the best method to do that?
missed your videos , you have done some great stuff previously , and this is no exception some great footage and knowledgeable voice over better than allot of youtube content by some margin
Thanks! You cover topics many want to know about but have no clue as to how it is done. I appreciate this and its fun to watch.
No words Jeff, as usual.
Thks you are back again...
Fun Fact: OOCL HK is one of the largest container ships in the world. This guy has a cool job. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OOCL_Hong_Kong
To be honest there is very very little between all the big ships in size, only thing that differs is capacity.
Glad your back. Love to see more of your time lapse work.
Very informative and entertaining video! As a fan of automated mooring, I would just like to point out that the MoorMaster system featured 35s into the video actually handles tide and waves better than ropes, keeping the vessel more stable while also mooring in less than 30 seconds at the push of a button. If anyone wants to know more, feel free to reach out!
The system of mooring robots attach with vacuum pads to the hull and control the position of the vessel with hydraulic actuation. By controlling the forces in surge and sway while letting the vessel float freely in heave, the system is subject to less forces than if there were ropes and the advanced control system keeps the vessel stable.
The system also moors the vessel in less than 30 seconds and releases in 15 seconds (compared to somewhere around 20 minutes to moor the ship with mooring lines) at the push of a button. In this way, the system also keeps everyone safe, eliminating snap-back zones.
On a side-note: really love the memes :-)
A video showing the MoorMaster system (which could really use some JeffHK meme expertise) is available here: ua-cam.com/video/CZreelrGPng/v-deo.html
You should do a vlog kind of series on one of ur trips where u video everyday life on the boat docking, ports etc
Holy crap. It's the Prodigal son. he's back. :D strange as it may seem...WE MISSED your VLOG. Welcome back.
Yes! I have checked every day to see if you've uploaded! Xoxo from Indiana USA
😱😱😱 now i feel bad for slacking so much
I live on the coastline of Somalia and enjou your content. If you ever pass by please let me know so that me and my friends can come aboard to say hi.
Somalia is a bit dangerous tho
@@JeffHK Lol! Am kidding. I know that. Even though the multinational maritime force has greatly reduced thw incidents of piracy in the coast of Somalia there's still danger. Anyway, hope you continue making this incredible videos. Stay Safe.
Look at me, *I'm the Captain now*
@@imanrayyan4894 The most memorable part of the whole movie. 👏🏼
Glad you're back! Missed your informative vlogs!

Glad your are back! Hope all is well bud!
Why the term "port" and "starboard"? Do the ships dock/berth/moor on the Port side only? No, right?
In aviation, the Port side is for passengers, and Starboard for cargo and other stuff. How/Why is it in maritime?
there is no preference in maritime, completely depends on the port
As near as I can find online, the origins of the terms relate to docking and steering.
Early sailing ship designs would not have a steering rudder on their centreline coming out the back end of the ship, but rather a less sophisticated steering oar hanging out off the right hand side of the ship (right hand side possibly due to right handedness being more common). With the steering oar getting in the way of the right hand side, these ships would always have to dock and thus unload cargo on their left hand side.
The right hand side was called 'starboard', likely coming from Old Norse language's stýri (steer) and borð (side of ship). The left hand side came to be known as 'larboard' from Middle English laderbord - lade (load) and borð (side of ship).
Eventually ship designs modernised to have rudders on the centreline out the back so docking became feasible on either side, but the names stuck. Finally, since 'starboard' and 'larboard' sound so similar, to avoid confusion English speaking Navies like England and America decided to drop the cargo related term 'larboard' in favour of the already in use French term 'port', the place you docked at. :)
Oh, wow! Thank you so much... I didn't know any of this, at all... Kudos!
Also, right and left are relative. Port and starboard are fixed for a boat/ship (left and right when facing the bow).
Who knew there was an alternative to ropes, to hold a ship to port !! Interesting video :)
I am seriously think that you get stranded some where
Welcome back Captain Jeff😀
Great to see you again, really missed you man!
