sooo funny at 8:45 to see "Merry Go Round" as one of the stores, and to see "Bulldog Lounge" on the sign at 8:50... I was stationed at Ft. Gordon from Jan-March 1984 and remember going to hang out & drink at the Bulldog, with all the UGA memorabilia everywhere. I always wondered if that bar just moved or closed. The Merry Go Round had everything from parachute pants to leg warmers... OOOH the things we remember!!! Thanks for the tour- would love to see the inside!!!
I was stationed at Ft Gordon 1981-83 at Eisenhower Army Hospital. This was a nice mall then, I used to buy my pipe tobacco at a shop there. It's a shame they closed it.
Hope you get inside! I'd love to go in to see it once more and take pictures, have taken many photos of the mall since it was shuttered. The entrance you mention at 2:58 is the old original Cullum's store, and later became Upton's. If i remember right, it was the first big anchor to go dark in the mall. It's a shame to see this sitting and rotting. Thanks for your great work!
I would still love to get one of the parking lot or inside light poles. I remember this place fondly as a kid. one of the last places I went with my grandmom before she passed. She bought me a RC boat in that toy store. OH and yea, I developed a nice fear of store santas there too. LOL
I was a manager in the Piccadilly Cafeteria at Regency Square from September 1997 until it closed in January 1998. Business was poor at best, I went from the busiest cafeteria in the company in Baton Rouge, LA, to the slowest cafeteria in the company. On a good day we would serve maybe 300 customers, most of the stores were already closed by then. I have to say though, I miss Augusta, a great place to live, but I have'nt been back since 1998, could have changed a lot since then.
Both my sister and I attended Signal training at Ft Gordon in 1989. Every weekend we would go either to the Regency Mall or Augusta Mall. The Regency Mall attracted a lot more soldiers because it was cheaper and closer. My sister and I would go to the Augusta Mall more often because the shops were a little more high end and it was a little further (and we wouldn't run into a Drill Sergeant) or other fellow soldiers. Ha Ha. But I miss the Regency Mall.
I remember going to its grand opening as a kid and being in awe of everything. would end up working at wards in the mid 80s. bought my first couple of fashionable suits there thanks to miami vice.
I grew up in Augusta. I remember going here once as a kid. This was right around the corner from the used books, comics, and games store I played at. I heard it started sinking into the ground or something.
I enjoy seeing how nature is re-claiming that location. The process is really going on all the time but kept in check by maintenance but if the maintenance stops for just a short time you can see the change. I wonder how the mall would look if left alone for 20 years. It would be great to see photos taken at regular intervals.
I live in Hephzibah and was stationed at Fort Gordon. The inside of the mall say outstanding. I am from Aurora, Colorado and The Regency topped the Aurora Mall and Buckingham mall. I was shocked to see that they closed the Regency down. It's a sad day for me.
When Regency Mall first opened, the commercials used "Loves Theme" by Barry White as it's theme song...my grandmother and the family used to go there about once a month, as well as for "back to school" shopping...
Not the food court entrance. That was a fancy store called Upton's. They had a "fancy" staircase just inside all that glass. The food court entrance was a non-descript door between Upton's and Montgomery Ward. You went down a long service hallway and came out next to Picadilly Cafeteria. Thanks for your videos. I loved this mall. It smelled so good in there.
It's still standing just passed by it a few months back I def remember when this place was open OMG I've had some Awesome times there watching Rocky Horror Picture Show hate to hear & see it's now closed and abandoned 😖
In the parking lot at this mall, beside a tree, I went to do a geocache and me and my brother found this huge hole playing Beethoven music. Still by far the weirdest thing I have ever seen
@@rustjunky764 not sure if it’s still there but this was years ago. I don’t remember which part of the mall it was. But it was near a tree in the parking lot sort of a ways from the store itself. There was a big hole and Beethoven music was coming from it. The hole was large and so deep u couldn’t see all the way through it so no telling what was down there
There's a balcony on the backside, that you can reach through the service halls on the second floor behind the post office boxes. Well, I vaguely remember from memory, I only went on it once, when I worked there. Once the Vice Prez to be came and gave a speach, and there were secret service with sunglasses wandering around. I really didn't give a crap at the time. It was open for a time as a flea market on the first level around Orange Julius, & recently a fire in apartments behind it.
Look forward to your interior shots. The area that you weren't sure was the Food Court entrance or not was last known as a clothing store called Uptons.
we used to go in the Montgomery Ward entrance. I used to buy a lot of records upstairs in the record department at MG.. the 45rpm records were about 85 cents then.
I live in Thomson, Georgia, 35 miles from Augusta, and it makes me sad every time I go by the site, because I have to do a ride-around to see how it is deteriorating --- it's one of those train wreck things, where you just can't look away...
Ah, what fond memories. It's a shame. High rent, poor security, and what ever else may have been reasons why it shut down it will truly missed. As a child, loved the Playland Toys as a teen loved the arcade. Korndog, Orange Julius, (First) Chik-fil-a, movie cinama,.... .If I hit the Mega-millions, I will personally buy it and open it back open for business. Must haves will be the Ol'Calcutta and Dino's pizza! Anybody know what happened to Dino's pizza? That topped it all!
kingkiller1011 Dino's Pizza was the best ever! Roma's Pizza is the same outfit, I think.... I moved back to Augusta in 2000 and was saddened to see the demise of the Regency Mall! ....do you remember Eggroll King?
This seems to be an interesting place. The inside should be interesting too... For not being used since 2002 this place really seems to be in pretty good condition. Here in Germany vandals would already have torn down half of the building :P I would probably try to take those street lights like the one at 6:59 with me. I like the way they look.
Montgomery Ward may have closed in 2001, but they made an online site called "Wards". They have no retail stores but should consider having some in and around popular areas.
It relly would be nice if they could turn it into a outlet mall, or a mega Sams. With sections being used as eateries.Never give up on a dream. Bring back the Regency Mall.A membership to certain stores may help.
Some malls are like that but not many.Rolling Acres Mall was like this for a long time. Not sure if its still standing? Its featured on the videos on the right side of this page.
This makes me sad and angry at the same time because you have this huge property and no one wants it...they act like south augusta is the worse place on earth.
I love how at 2:54 all the stores are listed, and like, as an afterthought Athlete's Foot is there in less bold and smaller font, as if even the mall itself was embarassed by the name. 8:49 Notice it says General Cimema. 9:51 What was the "Early Bird drop-off service" for? The uber 70's orange brick archetecture is amazing! Was there anything like that inside, or was it a cookie cutter, stainless steel, all white 90's remodel?
Malls all over the USA are declining or closing. The land should be returned back to nature or turned into a nature preserve after the buildings and asphalt are taken out!
@GanEdenVideo From everything I can tell, it got its ass kicked by Augusta Mall. More shops went over to the newer Augusta Mall, which was relatively close by, AND had easy expressway access, which Regency lacked. Also, security was an issue, particularly in the parking lot. Montgomery Ward going bankrupt pretty much sealed the deal.
What kills malls is what they charge the tenants the anchor stores dont pay a dime to the owners its all the small business owners who take the pipe they get lubed with poly grip and sand. My sister and her husband own a pet store in the mall and their rent went up 48000 dollars a year. that a 4000 dollar a month increase. then if you make over a certain amount of money(cap) you have to pay an additional 7% to the owners on top of your rent for the year.Absolutely insane Thats why this happens
Well I know my comment is totally irrelevant, on the other hand I don't like people givin me crap stories like that Town car sittin a decade in a parking lot with no flats no vandalism... I understand you love your ride and in a way it helps breaking the monotony of never ending concrete walls... It's a matter of respect to us Ytubers, no tricks needed; what about inside shots? Did they sack u after uploading this vid? Parking ur car so openly means u were authorised.... then
Hard to believe, once Regency was THE big mega empire mall, and Augusta Mall was the second run tiny out of the way loser mall. I remember rent on our little hole in the wall store was like $20,000 a month. I think the obscene rent is what kill the mall. I thought it'd make a good low budget university campus for someone trying to bootstrap a community college. You could use the stores as classrooms, the food court as food court, and all walking to class is indoors. Big stores for lectures.
Like malls all across the U.S. Malls are not where people want to shop. Its either online, at strip malls, "lifestyle centers" or most cities refurbished downtowns. Malls suck and this is happiness for me. Malls killed downtown, now malls are killed by the internet. Good riddance.
Apparently there is a lot of moisture and dangerous mold inside. Also this is on the older side of town. The area around this mall is not what it used to be.
Would you mind sending me a private message on how you got in?? My team and I are very much interested in exploring this mall. Thank you in advance and have a great day!!
Too bad I liked the Augusta and Richmond county area, hunted and fished there when in the Army. Of course we all know what the down town population was.
Sorry, good post but a tad too long without audio. Never the less, if anyone doesn t really know why the Mall closed, here' s the update ". THUGVILLE " That' s right. The rentacops could not control the BlackGangs. The Mall Management didn t want local police involved. Bad Press. Or should I say the property management company didn t want the local police. Nevertheless. Outta control gang activity. Result, closure. Next is the Augusta Mall. Every week a Black gang fight. Go figure.

I like watching these videos on old malls, it's like stepping back in time.
This video made me sad. I remember going to this mall back when I was in my teen years. Really do miss this place so sad :+(

Mall opened the same year as Dawn of The Dead...Monroeville Mall in PA filmed there
Hope they don't tear it down because I dreamed it was opened again (about 3 or 4 times)
I remember when it opened. I owned a store there.

I'm surprised no one has gone in this mall yet...With a camera. This would be as cool being at the Dixie Square in the early days of decay.

I'd love to check this building out. I wonder how it looks inside.

Worked at monkey wards in 85 - 87.

South Augusta is a terrible place. I grew up there. 73 - 95.
I wish someone had some of the mall when it was in its heyday...
ME TOO!! I Got My TV From There On The Last Week It Was Open
Yes JB Whites Chain Was Sold To Dillards in 98' the one at the Regency Moved to the Augusta Mall
Nice Lincoln
I remember there was a big "Trick or Treat" event there Halloween night.
remember when they would host the Jerry Lewis telethon there?
have you tried the theatre there too?
Sorry, I forgot. Regency didn't have an "official" food court, but instead had food spread all through the mall.
yeah that wasn't well planned. used to buy from chick fil-a and sneak that into the movies next door.
i live in augusta georgia used to go to this mall
Could you mention JB White one more time PLZ.The first 70 times wasn't enuff! LOL
JB Whites was a department store that was a rival to JC Penney, Macys, and others. The chain closed in the late 90s?
don't forget belks that was there too
Do you still have a store elsewhere?
has it been torn down yet
What was still opened in 2002? I thought it had closed a few years before that.

Good luck getting in, it's well boarded up
+Robert westenberger I don't care about getting in, I just wanna see it
i went to this mall in 1985 when I was stationed at ft Gordon ga
It was only open 24 years? That isn't a very long time for anything. Why did they close it? Love the Town Car btw.
someone else posted a video of the interior of this mall..Regency Mall Augusta Ga 2013
Good place to film a Zombie movie.

what a waste of a beautiful building, why did they shut it down?
Has the guy been able to go inside the mall yet? This place looks depressing.
Sky City Has The Pictures From 2012!!!! And It Looks Very Good To Be Closed for 10 years!! check it out!!!!!
@BearKlaw Suprisingly decent to be abandoned for 10 years
