    I think what a lot of people are not realizing is that this script is written as a DARK COMEDY, which means it was SUPPOSED to be humorous. To say you didn't like it because you preferred the somber tone of the film is ridiculous. You can't compare the two because the movie set out to make a dark and serious film, whereas the play set out to make a hilariously deranged portrait of family dysfunction. In my opinion, both of them accomplished what they set out to do. You must also remember that stage actors often have to project to hundreds of people in a theater, therefore their actions NEED to be huge. It's easier to be toned in film because a camera and editing will catch everything.

    Best thing I have EVER seen on stage (and I've seen a lot). So sad that the movie is horrid. Miscast, inept direction, distracting score. So unfortunate.

    • @ChrisWolff2013
      @ChrisWolff2013 9 років тому +2

      Yep it was a giant miscalculation from beginning to end. Meryl was all wrong as Violet, but Julia Roberts, very surpising because as you all know I downright hate her, gave an amazing performance and did a better job as Barbara than in the play. The movie, however, was shit. John Wells' directing sucked, the score was awful and the melodrama was insufferable.

      Amen to that. Julia has her moments, but I never saw Barbara as a frigid bitch, which is sort of how she plays her.

    • @Hylas19
      @Hylas19 9 років тому +2

      Chris Wolff
      I saw Julia's Barbara as an angry, frigid bitch of a woman, which is not the way I perceived the character in the play. Barbara is stressed in her failing marriage, depressed by her father's death, and generally overwhelmed by life. She has a right to be bitchy, but she's not a bad person. Some of that comes, in fairness, from some of the cuts in the stage to film adaptation; Bill's character suffered as a result, and so he just seems like a nice guy driven to an affair by his bitchy wife. That's not the character, and that's not how Julia played it. She did, however, play the EAT YOUR FISH scene pretty well.

    • @ChrisWolff2013
      @ChrisWolff2013 9 років тому

      Hylas19 That's also another problem with the movie. ALOT of the stuff from the play is nowhere in the movie. Letts, who also wrote the screenplay as well as the actual play, threw out so much stuff from the play for melodrama, which ruins the whole story.

    Theater snd film are two totally different mediums. You just can't compare them. This was a great production. The mother won the Tony. And the play was a success. The movie it's good in it's own merits, but if they did it the eau they did in the film, it wouldn't translate well onstage.

    THIS SET IS AN INCREDIBLE DREAM!! I’m a performer for a living and if I walked into rehearsal and saw THAT? I would look at it with the same excitement that a small child would look at a colossal jungle gym with a ball pit 😍

  • @theatreaficionado
    @theatreaficionado  11 років тому +7

    Yes. It's all scripted. There's an earlier line about it being inedible, and you can hear the character's mother (who made it) yes "IT'S MY CASSEROLE!" when people try to calm her down about the spill.

    To those commenting on the movie. Tracey Letts wrote the play FIRST. Without the play, there would be no movie. Just, shhhhh. Additionally, this is a crappy illegal bootleg recording, so if you want to experience real acting, go to a play. Movies are easy.

    I saw the tour with Estelle Parsons and she was absolutely amazing. The show has stuck with me ever since, I have a copy of the script and read it all the time. It's so wonderful to see the original cast led by Deanna Dunagen, thank you. Is there a possibilty you'll be posting any more clips? Or if you'd be willing to send a copy?

    This is a great scene with great buildup. I prefer the dark comedy aspect of the play rather than the film’s approach. And johnna has a big role in the play. I got to play Little Charles in college.

    I thought this scene in the film was pure genius! Merryl streep eclipses all the other actors, like the calm before a storm her performance is second to none- a sensory overload of raw emotion- brilliant and captivating!

      Wrong. My parents were both raised in traumatic childhoods, and they connect with Vi and Mattie Fae more than any other characters. I understood why they found the meanness, vicious banter, and frustration was funny. I did too and we all love this story.

    Ok this is not nearly as good as the movie! Barbara is like a robot, and Violet just looks stupid- Julia Roberts did Barbara much better, and Meryl Streep's Violet is 50 times better than this- not to mention Julia Roberts tackled Meryl Streep to the FLOOR!!!!
    Fun Fact: There were no stunt doubles involved- Meryl did everything herself- and so did Julia
    Like I know there are mixed reviews on the movie, but compared to this, well, there's really no comparison- this isn't even close to the level that Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and the rest of the cast did it......

      As one who saw it onstage in Chicago with more or less the same cast, I can attest that the experience in the theater was breathtaking. Yes, there were laughs, but you never lost sight of the scene's dramatic effect. You'll have to take my word for it, a UA-cam clip can't replicate what it was actually like to be there.

    • @EvaSofie

    It's so odd to me how a movie that is so dour and serious was adapted from the play with so much life and such a sickly sense of humor. Gosh, as someone who only started trying acting recently, it must be so insane to get to do something like this show.

    @cjames8457 4 роки тому +4

    Sorry, this doesn't compare to Meryl's acting. The movie built this scene to be much more tense and uncomfortable. I think it worked much better. Violet was much more frightening as she sat there brooding, not even touching her food. All she wanted was a fight. This is too light and the thoughts of the characters seem to come from nowhere.
    One example: Violet asks in jest if there's a younger woman involved. Here there is no reason for him to admit it as its a light question. In the movie the scene was already so tense he didn't dare ignore or lie to Violet. She was vicious and intimidating. It just made more sense

  • @BrotherWoody1
    @BrotherWoody1 10 років тому +2

    At least, the movie doesn't try to replicate the play's broad & flat comedy. The playwright & scriptwriter (one & the same person) learned valuable lessons along the way & as such, the movie is a finished realization of the play's innate power. Based on this scene alone, I would have never wanted to see the movie.

    • @grifter84

      Yep, the Pulitzer committee and Tony voters sure do love to heap honors on unpolished movie scripts.
      I do agree on one thing: after seeing the play, I had no desire to see the movie either. There was no way it could live up to the live experience.

    the play didnt work for me..idk but i felt as if the Mother in this play ddnt do justice to the character... Meryls performance was way much much better!! This one is pretty weak...Meryl was able to channel diffrent emotions in this dinner table scene and she looked sickly too which was needed for her character..this one in the play didnt look sickly at all.
