What top coat/base coat do you use?
- I don't have a favorite topcoat, usually I use the INM Out The Door (can be found at Sally's Beauty Supply) for swatches and the HK Girl from Glisten & Glow for manicures. My all time favorite base coat the CND Stickey. You can find that on Amazon.com or at Ulta stores.
Why do you take your picture and video swatches separately?
- Since my lighting, camera settings, and tripod all have to be adjusted when switching from pictures to video, its faster, and helps keep the lighting more consistent, if I batch process all the pictures at once and then all the videos at another time. It also helps me get a feel for how to work with the polish if I do my pictures before the video.
How long do you let your nail polish dry between coats?
- I wait until a coat is completely dry to the touch before adding another one. The time it takes for that to happen varies from polish to polish, but usually is around 3-5 minutes.
How long do swatch videos take you to make?
- To take pictures, film, edit, and upload, it takes between 8-12 hours depending on the size of the collection.
Why don't you paint EVERY SINGLE inch of your nail and ALL THE WAY UP TO THE CUTICLE EVERY SINGLE TIME?! DEAR GOD WHY?!
- I purposely avoid the sides of my nails and my cuticle line when I'm swatching because I do swatches one after the other after the other. Removing polishes that are applied too close to the skin can stain the skin around my nails and make the next swatch look bad. I do it to keep the video clips and pictures clean.
Why don't you use a peel-off base coat when you swatch? You should use the UNT one because Simplynailogical uses it and everyone should use everything she uses with no exceptions.
- I speed swatch. The polish is still wet or tacky by the time I remove it to apply the next one. Using a peel-off base coat would not only add an extra step to my routine, but would require me to wait for the polish to dry before it could be peeled off. This would end up taking more time and be less efficient for me.
Trust me, if Cristine suggests it, I try it...but everyone has different taste in products and everyone does things differently. Two people can have vastly different opinions on a product. It doesn't mean that one of them is wrong, it means that they're different people.

I understand why people think that frosty polishes are for little old ladies BUT I can't help myself = I still love them. Although with this collection I actually prefer how they looked after one coat than with 2 or 3. I'm thinking they might look cool over another color.
Beth Magalski Frost and sheer finishes are sophisticated, fresh and actually sexy, to be honest. They accent and display well-kept nails to best advantage. I don't know why they became stigmatized. This collection is the epitome of classic holiday elegance. I'm glad some of us appreciate it.

Just wanted to say thank you for the Polish Pick website. I love the holidaze over u. I have up all night by china glaze and it is a very beautiful dark blue almost like royal deep blue. And yes you can tell it is blue in and especially outside. Stunning color and i get so many compliments on how beautiful it is on my nails as well the shine 💕💕💕

Some polishes are probably designed to be sheer-- they used to be worn that way. Essie is a good example of this style. Funny how we're all about opaque now.

I really like this OPI collection which is super weird. I haven't been loving their collections the past couple of years, but these colors are a little bit different for a holiday collection.

Wow, after such an amazing fall collection from OPI, this holiday one is kind of meh for me. Probably because I'm not a fan of frosty finishes and there were several in this collection. I do like the Chemis-Tree one though. I might grab two out of this collection. Thanks for the excellent video!!
I don't hate frosts, but those 1st 2 I would only find useful as "toppers" for similar light colored creams, to add a festive effect. Just too sheer to be worn alone IMO.

Great review Jess. I really liked some of the finishes in this collection, I picked up four including the black with gold flakes, Feel the Chemis-tree, The color that keeps on giving (because I love pink :)) and Coalmates because of the holo in it. I really like the look of Sending you holiday hugs (and I love the name! so sweet), but OPI describe this as a fuchsia so I was hoping it was more of a pinky red, is there any pink in that polish?
I feel like Feel The Chemis-Tree totally belongs in a Halloween collection. Gorgeous colour though!

I thought Holidazed Over You was black. It even says Jet black on the box (I bought the mini pack) and I always thought jet black was the deepest shade of black
Snow Glad I Met You is a sweet name and a soft and sweet color. I have OPI Kyoto Pearl, and it's a similar color, but every single time I use it in a manicure it never dried on my nails. So annoying. Is it just OPI? Its my only polish from them
Do you think 'Feel The Chemis-Tree' might be a dupe for Nars 'Purple Rain' or Chanel 'Taboo'? It would be nice to find a drug store line dupe for that.

Top the Package with a Beau reminds me of a black and gold version of Metallic 4 Life except that it has flakies instead of glitter. Those pearly polishes need to go. I think Feel the Chemis-tree is prettier than Turn on the Northern Lights

Final Cut to edit, Canon 70D for videos, Nikon D5100 for swatch photos and swatch videos. I don't have any reason to use two cameras, I just haven't played around with doing swatches with the Canon yet :)
Did u use any base coat or primer before u apply these?
How do you keep your cuticles so nice? Do you put anything on them? Mine are so dry and i can’t find any oils or creams that really help. Annoying. Great videos.
I put a bit of cuticle oil on for every swatch picture (it hides all the dry spots) so they stay pretty well moisturized from doing so many swatches :)
hi jess! this is probably super random, but i trust your advice when it comes to nail polish. i'm pretty new to the collecting world and wanted to branch out into indies. what are some good indie brands/collections to start with that aren't expensive? thanks!
KBShimmer has some of the lowest prices I've seen for indie polishes. Indies in general run higher because they aren't mass produced but KBShimmer's polishes have stayed under $10. They have a pretty large selection on their site as well :)
Catherine Valenzuela Jess has her own line of indie polish, ninezero lacquer and they are fantastic!
Wayyy to many metallicy shimmery polishes not my favourite kind, some are pretty but I prefer the essie winter collection

I have very mixed feelings about this collection. I hate the light frosty polishes but have absolute heart eyes for the darks. Very hate-love collection in my opinion

I'll never understand the point of polishes that look straight up black even though they're TECHNICALLY not. Literally everyone is going to think they're black. Wicked by Essie is another one. I don't get it.

I want at least three of them but these f***ers are almost €15 ($18) in the Netherlands and that's a little too much for me! Even though it says "made in the Netherlands" on the bottle!!
Marieke Vee check out ebay, you can usually get opi polishes for ~$10 with shipping to the netherlands! I stopped buying polished in store for this exact reason, they're way overpriced here
Marieke Vee the bottles actually say: made in USA. But I live in the Netherlands too and agree they are very expensive, but I buy them anyway🙈 you should check out "beautychain" on ebay. They sell OPI's for $6 plus $4,50 shipping!
What the hell OPI? Such a disappointing collection. It seems it’s all been done before and I feel like we’re going back to the early 90s with those frost polishes. Ew!
