  • Have you ever wondered why so many people obsessively chase whitetail deer around every fall? I think about this a lot.
I often ask people, "Why do you like to hunt?"
I ask this question out of genuine curiosity, but also because it's interesting to me that most people struggle to articulate the source of their passion for hunting.
When I was younger, I thought hunting simply filled the void left behind by my former, wannabe, athletic self. But lately, I feel like there's something more to it.
Hunting is an exercise in recurrent failure. Think about how much time we spend preparing and attempting to shoot something compared to how often we succeed. We scout meticulously during the spring and summer, fine-tune our bows, practice shooting, and spend endless hours staring at maps trying to understand why deer do what they do. All this work for what?
I looked in the mirror the other day and found my first strands of grey hair. Time flies, as they say. But in that moment, I asked myself, "What the hell have you been doing for the last 30 years?"
And you know what I realized?
Almost all of the good things in my life are the result of some failure along the way. And at the time, those failures really pissed me off. Looking back I wonder how I could be so blind to this. But, if you don't know where you want to go I guess it's impossible to know if you're moving in the right direction.
I think on some subconscious level this is why hunting is so important to me. Failed hunts used to infuriate me, just like failures in other aspects of my life. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but at some point I learned to embrace failure as a step toward consistently killing good bucks. And I gotta tell ya, hunting is way more enjoyable now.
Turns out, life works the same way.
I read an article a while back that described "grit" as an indispensable character trait. The author defined the term as, "a blend of optimism, creativity, and persistence, which together empower one to reappraise failure and regulate emotion - a behavior known as grit."
Hunting epitomizes the ultimate test of grit.
The new Grit series is the story of our 2022 deer season hunting public land in some new, unfamiliar places - a group of guys chaotically trying to get on some public land whitetails. I'm not sure if there's anything you can learn from us hunting wise, but hopefully our struggles can serve as a reminder to always have a big ole, toothy grin on your face no matter the outcome.
We can't thank you enough for watching the show. Feel free to drop a comment if you have any feedback, good or bad - let us know what you like and what we can do better. Afterall, this is our first time trying this content thing.
Thanks again for watching and good luck this season!

And your content is quickly becoming a favorite. In fact, your “Hill Country Bucks” series speaks my language. My OnX and CalTopo looks like a physics professor’s whiteboard, but if you figure out a boatload of good places on public, the maps tell the kill story. I could go on for days telling stories and sharing maps with detailed information about how bucks were killed, but you guys are doing it with video and really teaching good all-around woodsmanship with new technologies that help decider the solution on a map, and prove it with boots on the ground. Good work. I hope to see success in those spots, the kill shot on video, and a recap of the work and study you put in to finding the spot. Love those kind of videos!

It takes GRIT and initiative to work hard enough to buy your own land that you can hunt. Going to public land is easy, by comparison. I've done both , I know. But now that I have 500 acres in a Kansas trophy zone, the grit has turned to gravy. 😂😂😂 Don't hate just emulate!!!

Second this^^ ….definitely need an in-session episode & podcast with him, focused more on his mountainous terrain would be cool.
One of the more “under the radar” killers, that also, happens to relate most close to my style/ thought process/ terrains/habitat: bigwoods/mountainous, tracks, still hunting

Yo. You guys really have stepped it up. Absolutely loving the in session stuff. Everything feels fresh and exciting..in a time where everything is getting watered down and rehashed and refrigerated. Oh and help me out on getting a job..I must’ve said some content has sucked 100x over the years and never been offered a job. 😬 jk. But seriously..your content sucks🤓🤞🏼
