The sheer hubris and egocentrism that goes into being Matthew Barney is...astounding.

He doesn’t come off intelligently. He makes really cool stuff but he’s so boring whenever I’ve read his stuff getting broken down and explained by other people, it’s really self-important but not so profound I guess

      What is profound?

i think he has a cool aesthetic, but I really struggle to see any meaning behind it. for me, it seems like surrealism that pretends it has any deeper meaning behind it. it comes off as a bit pretentious.

gabetiberio He’s surprisingly open about explaining the nitty gritty details about what his art is actually expressing and how. There are some UA-cam videos out there where he does that. It’s not that he doesn’t have anything to say, and sometimes he makes really interesting stuff. It’s just that it’s really not as interesting as even mainstream Hollywood movies and I don’t know if he is aware of that. It seems like some of these installment guys think hollywood is shallow in ways that it doesn’t have to be. There’s so much more merit to a Kubrick than any of these installment guys. Barney lacks balance in his work so in that way I don’t have the patience for it.

@@lukeshioshio I'm very aware of how much he explains his work, and I think thats part of the problem for me. It seems very prescriptivist, the one true meaning that the artist says, but no one can really infer that from the actual pieces. And yeah, even if you accept his explanations as the true meaning, I think in the end its a bit boring.
