Why Cashmere Is So Expensive | So Expensive

- Cashmere is one of the most sought-after fibers in the world. It's fine hairs are softer, lighter, and can be up to three times more insulating than sheep wool. It has been a prized material for centuries, but its quality comes at a cost and a luxury cashmere jumper could cost you well over $500. So why is it so expensive?
Cashmere is known for being one of the softest fibers in the world, it's thin hairs mean that it can be woven into incredibly soft, luxurious garments and it's long lasting, but it comes at a cost.
Cashmere doesn't come from a sheep like you might think, but from the cashmere goat. These goats are found across the Himalayas where temperatures can drop to -30°C and their freezing cold habitat means that they grow an incredibly thick, warm coat. Cashmere goats have two layers of hair, thick wirey guard hairs and a super-soft cashmere undercoat. While a sheep can produce at least 3 kilos of wool each year, a cashmere goat will only give you around 200 grams.
Because of the tiny amount each goat produces the supply is severely limited, and the fibers can only be collected once a year. Even when you've harvested the fibers the usable weight halves once it's been stripped of grease, dirt, and thicker hairs and cashmere still only makes up 0.5% of the world's total wool production.
Once you have the pure cashmere, processing it takes a lot of work. The fibers are first dyed to the right color and aerated to stop them clumping together. Cashmere's softness means it needs to be treated delicately throughout the whole process, any chemicals or over processing will damage the fibers.
The fibers are then carded - a process that detangles and lines up the hairs in thin sheets so that they can be spun into a yarn. The quality of cashmere is graded on its fineness and length, and high quality individual cashmere hairs can be as thin as 14 micrometers.
Cheaper cashmere products have become hugely popular recently. These claim to offer the quality of cashmere for a lower price, some may use a slightly lower grade of cashmere, or different processing methods to make the end result more affordable. And while they are comparatively cheap, they're still usually at least twice the price of wool.
There have been extreme cases of mislabelling too, and some supposedly 100% cashmere products have been found to contain yak hair or even rat fur. If you do find a really cheap product that claims to be cashmere, it may be too good to be true.

Dude betrayed his family name lmao

Sounds like feminine to me.
The Brits abolished slavery a few decades earlier than the US so the British side of the family had to switch to a finer fiber and an Asiatic source of labour too probably.
The Cashmere CEO’s last name is Cotton.
And his wife's name is Silk
What an irony ...
where and when?
Beard Cheese lol, good one. 😂
Cotton?? TRAITOR!!
Fun story . When I presented a friend of mine,a Kashmiri jacket for birthday, I was a butt of jokes amongst the people in party as they thought a jacket of native Indian market is a low profile gift . I took it back while leaving home and enjoy the warmth!! Sometimes people aren’t worth for everything and sometimes rich people don’t appreciate what’s in front of them 🤣
Hope you ok my friend. That was mean of them

Answer to most episode in the series: the material is hard to find
Wrong, because people are willing to pay it's asking price.
@@bloatedsodium7301 He's not wrong. It's simple supply and demand. Sure, you can go ahead and say that theres people willing to pay. Thats the demand. Now how about the supply? Both of you are right lol.
This is correct. Also while sheep are sheered for their hair, cashmere goats are combed using a long toothed metal comb grabbing only the fine fibers closest to the skin, making the procurement of the fiber much more labor intensive which ultimately adds to the cost.

Cashmere is pretty durable too. My dad had this sweater from the age of 14 and I found it at my grandma and asked her about it. She said I could take it home and I did, I wore it to school with some yellow shoes and jeans because it was navy blue, red, yellow and light blue. He picked me up from school and was so happy it lasted generations.
Nah cashmere aint that durable when compared to other wool tho. If u want a really durable wool product Pick the english wool.
1985, I spent 90 pounds sterling ( about 250 in today's money) and treated myself to a cashmere crewneck jumper in deep navy blue, it was light wieght and warm and felt softer than any wool jumper I'd ever owned, more like cloth than wool. My ex wife put it in the washing machine with the regular laundry, hot wash. What came out was a heavy wieght jumper that would fit a 5 year old.......was not happy. That wasn't the reason she's my ex, but it certainly didn't help....
Sad. Have you tried Merino wool? It's wool but can be worn close to the skin and is really soft.

Cashmere is actually the older anglicised spelling of Kashmir, a region in India after which is cloth is named.
No one asked for it where cashmere word came from. It's just goat wool. The goats are found in Afganistan, Nepal, Pakistan, northern India and China
Pack Man The Kashmir region actually also covers parts that are in China and Pakistan,
You need to take geography

One of the many many many nice parts about living in the "flyover states" is that trendy overpriced coastal garbage rarely finds a serious foothold here. It's basically only the spoiled brat rich kids who desperately want to pretend they're Californian who have any interest in it.
jamesonknot why you mad tho?
Expansion of fair trade production could have awesome implications for stability in the middle east if you companies were to work directly with farmers in Afghanistan to make cashmere for instance.
I have this cashmere silk scarf from Burberry (its original cause we got the receipts and everything). I got it for my birthday. Its the most softest and most expensive scarf i own . But I wore it with a pin this one time and since then I rarely use it again because it is so soft and so "fragile". There's literally a hole in my scarf . But I LOVE it !
Because it is made by Oompa Loompas.
I got a cashmere jumper for my 21st birthday, im 46 now and still have the jumper and still wear it.
Cashmere is catered for old 👵🏻 frail wealthy people. I consider myself to be from a wealthy family as-well and i can assure you me & my family are more than happy to buy any form of normal cotton wool or scarf from the high st shops so long it keeps me warm. Infact now that its winter i bought myself a really nice fleece pyjamas and jumpers from an nice reasonable clothing department and it definitely keeps me warm. 😊
Question: What's stopping the goat farming industry from simply selectively breeding/genetically modifying the genes of the goats in order for them to produce more of that thin undercoat?
Hypersonic Megalodon I don’t think it would be count as ethical. Also the goats are in regions where western brands are not present. Hence it may be difficult to do testing on them.
Hypersonic Megalodon also making it more commercial will bring down the price of cashmere
Hypersonic Megalodon they would likely overheat and die
You meant, every other goat on the Planet?
Or just the ones in the Himalayas? 🤔
@@nishchaysrivastava6251 How would that be unethical? We've done the same to everything for the last 10,000 years.
TIL. I honestly always thought that cashmere was silk that was spun into yarn to make it super soft.. thus coming from silk worms. I had no clue it came from goat.

Jumper.. when I was a girl, a jumper was like a dress with a bib type top of a skirt. You wear a shirt under the bib area. Layered. A knitted pull over shirt, then the pumper over it.
Usually the shirt was a solid color that coordinated with the colors in the jumper fabric.
It's like an overall with a skirt on the bottom instead of pants.
Very popular in the '50s - '70s. For girls and women.

I recall reading something about 15 years ago, that one of the reasons it's so expensive, is that when pulled out, the yarn on a wool sweater may be 400 yards long... Whereas on a cashmere one, it'd be about 4 miles. Definitely made my ears perk up.
You could maybe knit a baby sweater with 400 yards of wool but not an adult sweater. Regardless, the amount of wool (cashmere or otherwise) that's used is directly proportional to the size of the sweater and the thickness of the yarn, not to the material.
I love Kashmir it’s a shame what’s happening to the people of its region ❤️

You answered the question in the first 12 seconds of the video
I'm from Ordos, one of the biggest Cashmere brand come from Inner Mongolia. I see soooo much Cashmere. They are not much thicker than a shirt, but you can walk in -15 c with a single layer of Cashmere jumper and a light jacket. It so comfy that you are supposed to wear it with no layer under.
Zihao Ding and mess it up with armpit sweat?
Zihao Ding did you work with Macy’s or Federated? We used to import tons of cashmere from Inner Mongolia.
The term Cashmere is the British pronunciation of Kashmir probably.
The fact that cashmere isn’t named after Kashmir boggles my mind
It's named after kashmir
Cashmere is just the Anglicized spelling of Kashmir.
Everything great can be found under Himalayas
I like this series very much
Because it is made by supreme.
I like your video but it left me with a lot of questions that I did not really get an answer to
The inner coat of a goat might be great but you CAN'T beat the wisps of an alpaca's ass...
Mongolia is the world’s second biggest cashmere producer after China, and Mongolians wear cashmere everything in winter. It’s just too cold there.
You should feel my new sweater! It’s 95% cashmere and 5% rat fur.
for that quality of yarn, I would pay a premium. There's just such difference in working with luxurious fibres. and a scarf I make wouldn't cost any less than what you buy from a store. the only difference is the labour costs would be astronomical.
Honestly "So cheap" would be super cool

Vicuna was the most expensive cloth
Every now-and-then I'll find cashmere sweaters at Goodwill and get well over a pound of yarn for only $4.50.
Also make a video on yak wool, even it is also expensive.
Makes u wonder what they do with scraps and leftovers?
I love cashmere unfortunately I came home from an extended vacation and they were mostly all ruined with little holes
great video. thank you
Sooo... just gene sequencing cashmere producing goats and breed for a high cashmere coat goat.
Then you have a smaller foot print of goats making a higher quantity (& possibly quality) of cashmere.
Is there any link between cashmere and Kashmir??
BroCat yes Cashmere is the obsolete spelling of Kashmir.
There are way too many things in this world that are so expensive, that I wouldn't even buy if they were cheap.
So there’s not that many animals compared to the average sheep that’s why it’s so expensive
I guess the goats can't compete against the sheep after all.
You should do a video on Ramstein Germany.
I love these Most Expensive Videos, I have binge watched probably 14 of em already!!🤯🔥 #BusinessInsider
Cashmere is the greatest. Of all time
I never realized how important animals are😌
?
What I don't understand is if it's wool or not. I can't wear wool unless it's lined. It sounds like a wonderful material.
It's not wool. Wool only comes from sheep. That being said if you have a true wool allergy you may not be able to wear it as it is similar in structure. If on the other hand you are sensitive to the scratchiness of some wool s cashmere will feel completely different. Heavenly soft!
The cashmere is called that because the goats are from Kashmir in India!!
twish India 😂 , it’s called Indian occupied
Nope.
They were originally found in India( see P.S.), by Brits.
*P.S.* By “India”, I meant ‘British India’. As there was no united India before that. And no sovereign united India before the Dominion of India. I noticed the omnipresent geopolitical fight has already started, so I just don't wanna light-up this tiresome flare.
What really irks me is that the suppliers of these luxury items gets rich while the farmers who raise these goats remain in poverty.
If rat fur makes a passable cashmere knockoff, why aren’t we just using it?
I tought the same😂
Are those books behind him?
Oh boiii.... You must have lots of cash to have cashmere. Cash-more in this case! 😄
When I saw the thumbnail
I thought of cashmere toilet paper
I have always pondered this question...
Amazing how we can’t use Gene technology to make a recombinant type of sheep that can make cashmere wool. Effectively lowering the price.
Uhhh that's a great idea!
Stop messing with genes
You think it's expensive? Try Tuush (approx. $1000 per 200gram), another wool from kashmir
RatherA lol you’re taking the video out of context, being expensive is relative. So that fabric you’re talking about, is just a piece of cheap fabric from most billionaires. And a 10 dollar cotton shirt is already expensive is some other countries, well go figure, you damn uncultured swine.
Simon cotton, what a fitting name
They didn’t show how the wool is collected . I’ve seen it myself and it’s the ugliest most cruel way . Google it. They’re not just “ brushed”. Don’t support this cruelty. Plus they collect it during the winter months when these poor animals need their coats the most since they live in cold mountain areas. I know it’s about business but Please focus on the ethical side in your videos
I searched it up and it says a lot of the goats freeze to death as cashmere is most popular in winter.
Some vendors do brush it off, though. Not all vendors collect in the winter
The goats are combed when they start naturally shedding their undercoat (cashmere) which happens anywhere from January to May. It's not cruel if done properly.
500 bucks... I'll stick to fleece.
Cause it’s super soft. What is it velvet!!! Lmao 😂

Yeah, okay, but I really want to know how is the raw fibers separated from the thick overcoat hairs.
the Cashmere goat is from Kashmir right ?
Because the PR Department needs a Lot of Money for greenwashing.
Always the same plot: Basically it’s expensive because their manufacturing plant is expensive to maintain or the raw material is scarce. Boring rich people’s lives!
Thinking about this logically, sheep wool should be not even a third of the cost, but as we all know we pay for the craft not the material its made from
