I've been in Ephesians for over a year now. It is a book of majesty and great truths and Paul did a jam-up job proclaiming the glory of God in it. But to get the historical side like this video showed, especially about how "spiritual" the Ephesians were about the darkness and their past lives, shines a whole new light on why Paul wrote what he wrote in Ephesians.👍
This is wonderful to hear! Ephesians is such a powerful book, and only made more powerful when we can place ourselves into the historical setting of the book. Blessings!

The Ephesians were afraid and constantly trying to please false gods in fear of punishment and in hopes of reward based on what they do. This is a textbook definition of the 5th main world religion, animism. Animism has much mystisisum and belief in spirits and superstitions and belief in reincarnation. But we do not need to fear as slaves messing up or straining to perfectly please God, because Jesus did it all for us, we are perfectly acceptable to God through Him and Him alone.
Good stuff! Problem in exegesis always arises when preachers have to make a personal application from what the author wrote to the church as a whole. The application is for the church more than me. It's not that I have an identity as an Ephesian-- which is true-- but, that we as a church are unified. Both are important, but that's not what Paul is mainly writing about. Paul is preaching that the church would find its unity in the same way Jesus, the Father and Holy Spirit find theirs'. Which, is more implicitly stated beginning in chapter 1 ending in chapter 5. It is also helpful to read Eph. alongside the letter to the Church at Ephesus in Revelation. There, we definitely see the importance of identity in Christ.
