So, first thank you! I was about to give up. My carbs were leaking so I pulled the carbs and rebuilt them. I went to test it to make sure the carbs we no longer leaking and nothing. No neutral light. I did what you said, I cleaned the switch but still nothing. I was about to give up, but I said can’t hurt. So I bought the Honda OEM switch. I knew I was good when I put the néw switch in amd the N light lit up, big smile. Hit the starter button and sure enough, fired right up!

You can easily check this, open the plug and make a jumper between the two extreme pins, omitting the middle one, if the neutral light comes back, you know you have a sensor that needs to be replaced. You can spray it with remover, then use compressed air and finally pour contact oil - this is a temporary repair until the courier delivers a new sensor.

I replaced that switch and still don't get the light. The bike starts, reverse, works, but neither light works

That sounds like the bulb might be burned out ! Or fuses or relays.

Man! I went out to start the bike, it's ben real cold here , plus I was sick, had not started it in probably a month, charged teh battery for good measure. went out and it fired right up! Ran like a champ! I let it run a while, probly 8 or 10 min, then Mom in Law came out and I shut it off as I have a hearing problem. POOF no neutral light. I had the charger on it still and I have been thinking I blew something out electrically. I did wiggle the reverse lever around but it does nothing. I am sure this is teh same problem. I also have a 1998 anniversary. I didn't know where that switch even was till just now. LOL I am going to order one. looks like even if I fix this without it I will still need one later. LOL Might as well get a new one. 18 bucks is a deal right?

$18 is a good deal for one! And it sounds like it! These are pretty prone to going bad, 3 of the ones I have restored needed new ones!

Like I said the switch on the side is not the neutral safety light switch it is a switch to go out of in neutral so the reverse will work you need to start reading on the damn things before you start putting stuff out there that's wrong redo your satisfaction of stuff reading on you got it and don't come back with me with a comment saying you're right I know I'm right because I've talked to a guy that's worked on the things for years my mechanic works at a dealership so start reading up

If this switch goes out, even if the motorcycle is in neutral you will not get the neutral light on the dash. I can tell you exactly how the switch works. Whenever you pull the reverse lever , this switch is engaged. It has nothing to do with the actual positioning of the transmission. If you would please refer to the honda manual or watch the video before commenting it would be appreciated, instead of wasting your valuable time!

That's no neutral safety switch it's on the right side of the bike little brass piece with one wire that's a little switch where I go through the left side somewhere where he's got disengages in neutral safety switch so you can put it in reverse to let the starter do it if you got to do but these guys have to get their facts right before they put everything out okay it's no good what they're talking about that being a switch
