I got one at the NEC show, and have used it quite regularly with om1 and 150-400. I’ve found it really useful when I go walk around. Quick and easy to use. I use the ball on the monopod and find it makes using the monopod as a walking stick when covering rough ground really helpful. I now much prefer it over the ball and socket with arca mount that I’ve been using for several years.
You’re right, this is brilliant, yet simple. I have a bad back and like using a monopod but sometimes when photographing birds I can’t get the right angle with the camera stuck to the pod. I end up having to pick up the whole kit and that is awkward and hard on my back, or I have to take the time to release the camera. I’ve missed BIF shots because of the time taken or the monopod hit something or otherwise was in the way. Thanks for the video!
Just ordered mine. Can't wait for it to cross the pond! By the way, you might be interested in this: Haoge LMR-OM300. It's a replacement collar for the 300mm f/4 lens. It's larger than the one that comes with the lens, making it easier to hold. They also make LMR-OM415 for the 40-150mm f/2.8. That also fits the new 90mm macro.
My use case is that after knee surgery I really need to use my monopod as a hiking staff (a less whimsy name than a cane!) . I can quickly put my camera on the top when I need the extra stability for the shot. I really liked my monopod gimbal, but that takes longer to mount the camera every time and I don’t like the extra weight on my “hiking stick” ! I handhold my camera with a Peak Designs Cuff Wrist Strap, another “expensive” A+ product . Given the $$$ of a camera and lens, buy the best gear to protect it and make it more functional!
Pretty interesting. Looks like it would be great for sports as well. The camera could be on a sling hanging on your body and ready to pop on top of a monopod or tripod fitted with this device. Thanks for the demo!
Interesting thought at first that it was a new innovative replacement for the current gimbal stabilizer, meaning that the cylinder should have inside of it like self balancing motorized sensor that for getting the perfect gyroscoping effect for the level view (like the traditional gimbals provide but with out the streanuous, stressful and time consuming necessary balancing required before operating them). So any commenter bellow or your friend whould like to improve on the cylinder (motor capacity) to become eventually an act like a traditional stabilizer does, that would be revolutionary in the gimbals biz and like the Nebula 5100 slant promised us but has since been replaced by the time consuming like the Ronin, Crane and others but still with the same balancing needed.
What’s the real difference between this and having an Arca Swiss ball head on a monopod? I’ve used that setup for quite a while and it has all the positives you’ve described in the video with an added bonus: If you need to quickly move your camera up and away (a bird in flight for example) and it’s outside the range of monopod movement, I can just lift it all off the floor for that short period. If I were to do that with this ball and cup, the monopod would surely just fall to the floor, maybe damaging the cup?
It all comes down to personal preference really - I'm not someone who likes having my camera attached to a monopod/tripod, so to have something that means I don't have to fiddle around with releasing from a tripod head is ideal for me to not miss the shot. You can simply let the monopod rest against you when you take it out of the speedigimbal, or simply pop it on the floor - the nylon is pretty tough wearing from my experience.
@@everydaygrandad5642 not yet, no! But I will be getting it to test for a month in June whilst I'm on mull - so I'll be sure to give my thoughts about it then 👍🏻
Fair enough mate! I know it won't be for everyone. I guess the price reflects that it isn't a mass produced product - just a useful bit of kit that's been designed & engineered by a photographer. The value depends on whether you'd find it useful or not!
@@DTAnglesey I think the price reflects that the designer/creator is only set up to make small numbers, if he could get a decent sized company to make them the price could come down to probably £49 max 👏
If someone wants a good deal on one, be happy to be rid of it. What you don't see is anyone using this with a large prime. If you do, it's pointless. It's dangerous for a large lens, it slips out more than it stays in and just isn't functional.
A friend if mine uses it with a 600 f4 and uses it the same way as shown in the video and says it works well! I think the manufactures suggest the ball head in the tripod which makes it easier to slip off.
Just ordered mine today and got my £5 off. I usually hand hold my om-1 and 300 f4. I have a carbon monopod so I'm sure I'll use this.

Good idea, just a little pricey me thinks for what it is. It needs an investor behind it to mass produce it properly and reduce costs.
Looks great I must get one thanks for the review 👍
Thanks for the comment 😊 I'm using it an awful lot more than I expected!

Have tested the 150-600 yet

£79 for that! 😲 Is it made out of gold? platinum? I'll stick to my ballhead and arca swiss plate! Sorry Marc, way overpriced for what it is!
