  • Shinsekai is a downtown area in the southern part of Osaka City, known as one of the best tourist spots in the city. The symbol of Osaka, Tsutenkaku Tower, is the center of the area, which is lined with colorful signs of restaurants and bars. Tsutenkaku Tower is an observatory modeled after the Eiffel Tower in Paris and has long been popular with the people of Osaka. It was destroyed after the war and rebuilt to its current tower. Visitors can climb to the top of Tsutenkaku Tower by buying a ticket. The observatory is 87.5 meters above the ground and offers a panoramic view of Osaka City. Also on the observation deck is the golden Billiken Temple. Billiken originated from a god of happiness that an American woman artist saw in a dream in 1908. It is said that stroking Billiken's feet brings happiness. On the other floors, there are stores where you can buy Glico, Osaka's leading confectionery maker, and other Osaka souvenirs. Shinsekai is known for its kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). So many kushikatsu stores have opened that wherever you look, you will see kushikatsu shops. There are also stores where you can enjoy old-fashioned shooting games. I went to Sennariya Coffee and ordered a mixed juice with ripe fruits in a blender and a pudding. Both were very tasty. Then I went to Shinsekai Grill Bon, which is famous for its beef filet cutlet sandwich. I had the beef filet cutlet with demi-glace sauce, and it was amazing.
