Maybe you noticed that "Tanz der Vampire" billboards had covered streets of St. Petersburg much earlier than the premiere took place. During the press-conference of the show the director of State Theatre of Musical Comedy Yury Swarzkopf confessed that it is the main gamble that ever happened in the theatre for its lifetime. And now the premiere is done - "Tanz der Vampire" based on the film by the famous director Roman Polanski. Could particular St. Petersburg public accept this musical and how black comedy of Roman Polanski moved on Russian stage?
It was a real vampire gathering in the Theatre of Musical Comedy on the premiere night - young, fresh and starting vampires, and older ones who tasted plenty of blood already - met together in the hall lead by the main vampire of musicals' world Kevin Tarte.
Kevin, performer of Graf von Krolock in Germany, is a world star, has a fan-club of humorous horror lovers. Kevin Tarte came to St Petersburg specially to the premiere to his Russian colleague Ivan Ozhogin whom he had presented his talisman of 11 years - a precious ring - and maybe to exchange some new vampire experience. In person German von Krolock appeared a friendly European who is unlikely to have anything in common with powers of darkness.
Kevin Tarte: "Frankly speaking I have not seen Russian musicals before tonight, this one is the first live. I guess musical is an American genre. But here this theatre has a very good orchestra, fine company, very high artistic level".
Once upon a time Roman Polanski noticed Kevin Tarte as Gaston in Disney's musical "The Beauty and The Beast" and saw him to be an ideal von Krolock so offered Kevin the party. And now it's already 11 years that Kevin Tarte performs in many German cities in this role and says that the vampire is the chief part in his career.
Kevin Tarte: "I think musical theatre is something that combines everything - it's the most difficult art work and art form. And I think I like to perform it, to be the part of it - to sing, to act, to dance. And it's great that there are actors who are able to do this".
Naturally Russia has many fans of the vampire story: many people come to the show with flowers and some wore vampire's teeth. In clothes gothic style was dominating - black robes, low necks, black cloaks. On the stage - clean European picture: good decoration, solid costumes, some Disney's cartoon atmosphere. But it is likely that musical is still an American genre. Even cheerful French girl operetta is closer to Russian ears.
