I prefer the bf-109 series a shame no one's going to fly that old bird in a tournament. Especially considering what it represented as the best of German aeronautical engineering at its time.
Michael Mao I much prefer the lines and looks of the BF-109. I think it looked far better than any P-51 and especially starting with the F variant started looking even better.
Sadly his name will be largley unremembered outside of a small community because no one gives a shit about planes anymore. In the days of Curtis and Hughes, flight was magical, a marvel that represented a new age of man. Now, people sit in lounge chairs with big screen tv's at 45,000 feet doing 600MPH and get pissed off when their drinks take too long to come. No one gives a shit anymore, sadly. To me though, nothing sounds cooler than that Merlin whailing at full throttle. I kind of wonder where this family got their time/money to pursue this for generations though... Seems expensive. I like that B-25 in their hanger though. My grandpa was a B-25 pilot in WW2, his group was the 81st Earthquakers, stationed in Burma. He had some scary moments but the plane always got him back.
@Agent J I did. They were in a position to buy aircraft for less than a shitty pickup truck costs today. Now, they are worth multiple millions. Imagine, when values started to rise, they sold extras to other collectors- they also have an amazing facility where they have been doing exceptional aviation work for 4o+ years. They started simple, with junk hulks stored in friends back yards. All shoestring budget. No self entitles bullshit. Just hard work and tenacity, like I said earlier.
@Agent J How many warbirds do you have little one? I count quite a few right here in my shop. Not clients birds either. Like I said. Tenacity and lots of hard work. You should try is instead of pissing on someone else's parade.

Keep up the good work men....success is within your grasp.

I have sooo many thoughts about this video... First and foremost, an absolutely incredible effort on the part of the whole family !! I truly hope you all give it another try. Second, I was wondering ( among others ) why the P-40 in the thumbnail? That`s what made me click on this video to begin with. Third, the fact you went to Idaho for this record is intriguing. One, because the wife and I are moving to Idaho by end of June `19, and even more coincidental, we are moving to a little town called Challis...in Custer County !! So, you KNOW I`ve been on Google maps trying to find Joe Clarks` Ranch !! Fourth, what exactly is that runway # at 17:01 lol Last, To Steve Sr and Jr... I WILL be visiting your Museum in Chino before we move...you`re right up the road from us.
See what you mean about the rwy number? Either the image is backwards or it’s some kind of humor on the part of the land “rwy” owner. Either way, it’s a good catch.
I strongly suggest trying to get emotionally close to your dad. I had the same basic businesslike relationship with my dad. Now its too late for me to have more.
@Agent J Interesting question. I'm not sure that I would have wanted it but I do feel that I should have tried to find out. Obviously everyone's situation is different. This one just struck a chord with me, maybe because my dad and I spent a lot of time working on airplanes together as well (nothing like that beast though:)
Beautiful plane and an old classic powertrain. Surprised me to see the old rolls royce marlin engine in it. These classic historic machines are a perfect example of where we are today. I love it and their history!!
fantastic I've watched the Hintons for years, my grandfather worked at Eastern air lines in the 60s and got me involved in aviation, thanks for the insight into your family
554 mph!! In a propeller driven aircraft. That's pushing some big air. Steve, I feel confident if you get another shot at it, it'll be a record that will never be broken. Good Luck. I hope I'm around when it happens.
One of my best memories was when they flew the corsair. When the plane was sitting stationary it looked larger than life and the sound of it flying by was something words cant describe. I am so pissed that I missed the MiG 15 flying
Animated Airlines I would think they would think of it as a model t kind of thing just because of how many were made, whereas nowadays planes are extremely expensive and get more of a job done
@@AnimatedAirlines Yes. In fact the Model T was once the best selling car of all time for decades until 1972, when more Volkswagen Beetles were produced then Model Ts. At least 15 million Model Ts were made (there were roughly 30 million Volkswagen Beetles made.) The Ford factory assembly line was set up so that one Model T Ford was completed roughly every hour and a half.

Awesome work guys, super professional, I was blown away by the first pass straight line speed. Keeping working you will nail that record. 1 percent separates the legends from the rest never a truer statement. I’m a big fan stay safe.
@@maxwellharris507 yeah but 4000bhp coming from 27L V12, that's 148bhp/l is pretty low by modern racing standard, and it's very unreliable. Even back in the 70's we got formula-1 engine churning out 1000bhp from of a little 1.5L engine. 3
@@maxwellharris507 *grammar massacre warning* @Maxwell Harris it's a piston engine so not much difference than car engine, except than the fuel used, and the RPM redline. Stock aviation piston engines usual redline at only 2500 rpm to make the engine understress because it had to cruise at almost full throttle much of the time. For this race RPM limit is not an issue as the plane just need to do several passes at full speed. This test is done at very low altitude anyway so a car engine could be used with few modifications.

Outstanding! And the flying shots were superb! The editing was great, cross-cuts kept the story tight, not too many talking heads, a compelling story--and they lose! Great job!
A total cinderella story? I'm not trying to belittle the person, what he learned, what he achieved, or overcame. But let's be real for a moment. He was born with a pretty big silver spoon and the fact he has a multi-million dollar Mustang to conduct this story shows that. Plus his entire family is already well experienced in aviation. This is no cinderella story. This is a boy who was born lucky and wealthy enough to even attempt such records with a family heritage doing so. Congrats on achieving something very difficult to obtain. But you definitely did not start from the dirt to reach such heights.
100% right. Modern jets are much easier and safer to fly, specially on emergencies.. I flew DC-3's and other WW2 airplanes as cargo pilot in the 1980's. When i went to fly jets i could not believe how easy to fly they were.. Incredible difference..
Patently untrue. Think about who were flying these airplanes in war time. 19 and 20 year old kids with all of about 250 hours under their belt before shipping off to England to serve in combat units. The P-51 has a lot of go juice, but it's not terrifically hard to fly. The people that made the P-51 out to be this horrible airplane to fly are the people who can afford them (doctors, lawyers, the uber wealthy) who usually aren't pilots primarily. If you can handle basic stick and rudder skills you most likely have no issues flying a P-51.
Let’s hope he joins the ranks of the “1%” soon .. he and his crew of dedicated “friends & family” deserve it .. Great story .. Many thanks to all those responsible for making it possible. 👍
I wonder if they could get any faster if they used a cooling system similar to what was used in the He-100. But that might also need a completely redesigned aircraft.
@@HUEEY It's not about heating, it's about aerodynamics. The cooling system used in the He-100 didn't need radiators. The removal of holes and protuberances from the aircrafts fuselage made it way more efficient. If I recall correctly, the He-100 broke several speed records thanks to that.
Around 570 mp/h is the barrier you don't wanna cross with this planes. Plus the engines are maxed out, the amount of hp the race built RR Merlin can put out is at 3600-3800 hp. That hasn't changed since the early 80's. The pinnacle are the aerodynamics. Plus the boil off cooling system you mean was used in the P51 Galloping Ghost and some Seafuries. Search "Galloping Ghost" and "September Fury" here on UA-cam...
@Aleluia that’s what I’m saying there are many factors at play here. But I do agree that the he100s cooling system will make the aircraft way more aerodynamic. The only problem I see is that the he100 hand a way less powerful engine which did not produce nearly as much heat as a “overclocked” v12 Merlin.
@@HUEEY There is the only Mustang ever converted to a boil off cooling system similarto the He 100. And yes, it's the one that spectacularly crashed at the 2011 Reno Air Races. The conversion and the loss of stability through the removal of the belly mounted cooler was among the reasons that caused the accident. Top Speed was around 500 mph... m.ua-cam.com/video/es65gYhP2ms/v-deo.html
@@KitingDev it's still faster than the previous record though. Also each time the record increases the harder it will be to break the next time because it's based on percentage, its a pretty stupid system imo
@@basilisk7201 I think that's an exaggeration of the logic. But 1% is too big. But still.. it is faster. 0.001% or 0.002% is like .5-1mph of a speed gap and that is still considered faster. Just like cars 199 vs 200mph
What a beautiful story. Thank from me for sharing. The plane itself is just gorgeous. The P51 are as good as it gets. But I must at least mention the Spitfire. Either one of these on a fly by will bring tears to your eyes.Great Job.
By saying that the speed monitoring equipment may be off and then assigning 1% to it is arbitrary. First you’re assuming the measuring equipment is off without actual data to support the fact, thats arbitrary. Then your assigning that it’s off by 1% where did 1% come from? Why not 1.25%? So the 1% is arbitrary. Stop bring stupid.
While there are wealthy people who are involved with Air Racing. Steve has gotten where he’s at using his skill and determination not by spending money.
I'd rather watch a 1,000 of these engines blow and spend money to rebuild them, than see millions of dollars be wasted on politcical pork deciding on what gender someone is.
I'll never forget the Red Baron crash. Just like in the movies, smoke pouring out, the plane disappeared behind the hill then a giant explosion and black smoke. The announcer said that Steve had lost his life. I left the air races immediately, totally bummed out the whole way home. The next day, someone at work told me that he survived.
P-40 warhawk has a wing break speed of 661mph, but the controls lock up at 450mph roughly, and no you can't reach it is n level flight as the P-40s top level flight speed, using WEP was 360mph at 1 mile high, I realize that the plane he uses is a P-51, but there was a P-40 on the thumbnail, this is a call for them to fix the thumbnail
There is literally next too nothing on that airplane that is left over from WWII. This is a hand built bottom too top racing machine. Not a left over fighter aircraft. Though it may share some similar shape features and a name, there is nothing the same on this plane.

I used this video throughout my last few months of being a CFI into becoming an airline pilot. Thank you
Sadly his name will be largley unremembered outside of a small community because no one gives a shit about planes anymore.
@Agent J Or perhaps tenacity, and loads of hard work? I think that is the case. Lots of hard work
@Agent J I did.
@Agent J Your real question doesn't deserve an answer, as it is below the pile of dogshit in my yard.
@Agent J How many warbirds do you have little one? I count quite a few right here in my shop. Not clients birds either. Like I said. Tenacity and lots of hard work. You should try is instead of pissing on someone else's parade.
@Agent J Can one control,if they are born a prince,or a pauper?
I'm just an old truck driver, what do I know?
Excellent video with audio to die for. Rolls Royce Merlin cranking all it has is music to my ears. Keep up the excellent work but one part of this story saddens me..NEVER miss a chance to tell your dad you love him EVER and father to your son. Wish i could tell my dad one more time.... Keep up the good work men....success is within your grasp.
Amazing Story,
Amazing quality, Amazing channel, Amazing Warbird,
Amazing family,
Unparalleled devotion to Aviation👍
Love the spirit. Way to go, Steve Hinton Jr.. Hope you break the record. P-51 is one of my favourite planes.
SUPERB PRODUCTION! i'm looking to see Hilton's family braking the record
Absolutely the best 23:08 minutes I have spent in a long, long while. Everything done in this short story was perfection!
Fantastic story, worth the watch...
Thank you,Steve. Hope you do it another day. God bless you, your dad, your mom and your team.
Merlin power. What a fantastic engine, and the best sound ever.
Discovering this channel has to be the best thing that has ever happened to me.
I would love to ride in a World War II airplane one day 🔥
They usually have flights avaliable at airshow that you can fly in diffrent planes including a p51 two seater
youtube primer a few hundred to a few thousand depending on the plane.
Omg... THAT sound during the pass...
Just eargasmic...
*OH YEAH YEAH*
Why is everyone using that profile pic?
Oh yeah

Some bloke is trying to "Take over" UA-cam. That's why.
A great vid, wish he could have made the record, and he will in the future. I have seen both Hintons win races, and sadly saw Steve Sr go down in the Red Baron. In my 50 plus years as a pilot I know one thing for sure, the Hinton men are a pair of the most talented aviators in the world
Steve talking to the camera after his plane malfunctioned is me talking to my boss when he wants to know how production is going.
😂😂😂😂
Steve Hinton is the greatest aviator in the modern world, in my humble opinion. No doubt his son will break the record at some point. Never give up!
This just gives me energy how the planes go so fast.
Best air museum in the US. Walking among people saving these airplanes is soul-moving.
Fourth, what exactly is that runway # at 17:01 lol
Last, To Steve Sr and Jr... I WILL be visiting your Museum in Chino before we move...you`re right up the road from us.
See what you mean about the rwy number? Either the image is backwards or it’s some kind of humor on the part of the land “rwy” owner. Either way, it’s a good catch.
My dad was a P51D Fighter Pilot in WW2 and he would have been very interested to see this video and even to meet you guys
13:48 He dropped the F bomb
Thx
I *felt* where he was coming from
Under his breath practically, I would have been carpet bombing.
He was pissed
LOL @ *carpet bombing*
I think this is an amazing story. The P-51 Mustang will remain my favorite plane for years to come.
I love aircraft!
Shame I get sick flyin em’ 😂😂😭
I think I was 9 doing tricks on A string of the red baron
fantastic I've watched the Hintons for years, my grandfather worked at Eastern air lines in the 60s and got me involved in aviation, thanks for the insight into your family
SO MUCH ICONIC PLANES WAAGGAGAUH
554 mph!! In a propeller driven aircraft. That's pushing some big air. Steve, I feel confident if you get another shot at it, it'll be a record that will never be broken. Good Luck. I hope I'm around when it happens.
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Oh go away go away
One of my best memories was when they flew the corsair. When the plane was sitting stationary it looked larger than life and the sound of it flying by was something words cant describe. I am so pissed that I missed the MiG 15 flying
I really like to think about the fact they thought of the aircraft like we think of todays like the F22 and the F16
Animated Airlines I would think they would think of it as a model t kind of thing just because of how many were made, whereas nowadays planes are extremely expensive and get more of a job done
@@richardhouston736 true, wasnt the Model T manufactured heavily?
*mass produced
@@AnimatedAirlines
Yes.
@@SurprisinglyDeep I thought so, I'd watched a video about it by Real Engineering as well as the book "The Aviators" by Winston Groom where it breifly mentioned something of automobile manufacturing
It's the sound of the big RR V12 on high boost that get's me every time, I just can't get enough of that sound..
Oh yeah
oh yesh yeah
Steve and Steven Hinton 💪🏼😎 2 bad ass guys in the cockpit
Gut machin yeA
Those looking for the strip on Earth or Maps use "Flying Joseph Ranch, May, ID, USA"
Awesome work guys, super professional, I was blown away by the first pass straight line speed. Keeping working you will nail that record. 1 percent separates the legends from the rest never a truer statement. I’m a big fan stay safe.
Great story. If it was up to me, I'd opted for a more modern supercharged engine and use a pair of swept wing like the F-86 Sabre.
Anas Takiyudin Voodoo’s race engine had twin superchargers helping crank out 4,000HP.
@@maxwellharris507 yeah but 4000bhp coming from 27L V12, that's 148bhp/l is pretty low by modern racing standard, and it's very unreliable. Even back in the 70's we got formula-1 engine churning out 1000bhp from of a little 1.5L engine. 3
Anas Takiyudin aircraft engines and car engines are very different animals
@@maxwellharris507 *grammar massacre warning*
@Maxwell Harris it's a piston engine so not much difference than car engine, except than the fuel used, and the RPM redline.
The record is for a piston driven aircraft with relatively straight wings.
I love the planes of fame museum!! I go there all the time!
Karen Hinton is one of the last remaining great women of our time. She understands her Man, and his soul. His spirit. His passions That must never be interfered with nor tampered with.
This is no longer true in today's world.
Geronimo553 its your family's fault not his not even your's personally
Geronimo553 its my family's fault to be born poor and with nothing but its mine that am still poor
What an incredible group of talented people. Had me smiling from ear to ear. Reminded me of an era from long ago.
Have any of you been scrolling through the comments and think to yourself, I wish I had commented that?
No
the P51 Mustang is such a beautiful plane and truly the pinnacle of prop piston engine airplane
i would trade my soul and children to see a p-40 break this record
Sadly your children will have to stay in your possession
@@randomrandom1196 it wasnt a literal comment,it was a metaphor to show my fondness of the p-40,relax snowflake,my kids are grown and on their own

Can't get enough of amazing productions like this...
Just taking the heads from a v16 like it's nothing :D
V12
not a V16
The production is just amazing, this images, such a good filming, FOR FREE, wow. Amazing job, these planes are timeless
A German Pilot who flying combat jets etc. tells me only good ones can really handle a ww2 airplane.
That’s a cool idea that I could see helping. But I don’t think heat is the only problem when flying that fast.

How incredibly fortunate to be born into something so awesome and to be able to live such a magnificent dream. Very cool.
this 1% Rule is BS,... Faster is faster and 531 is clearly faster that 528
Its not, imagine records being beaten every 0.1 extra speed
@@KitingDev it's still faster than the previous record though. Also each time the record increases the harder it will be to break the next time because it's based on percentage, its a pretty stupid system imo
Land speed records are not based on percentage gaps. So I dont think why they should make that 1% rule. Faster is faster. Period.
Imagine if you go 528.00000000000001 instead of 528, is it still a new world record? According to your logic it is
@@basilisk7201 I think that's an exaggeration of the logic.
Dude, you broke the record, just didn't get the designation due to an arbitrary 1% rule.
What?
That 1% is to account for the error of the measurement instruments. It's not arbitrary at all.
Its not arbitrary. I'm sure 535 was probably attained by diving or crashing aircraft during WW2
Stop bring stupid.

spitfire is my fav idk why
I'll never forget the Red Baron crash. Just like in the movies, smoke pouring out, the plane disappeared behind the hill then a giant explosion and black smoke. The announcer said that Steve had lost his life. I left the air races immediately, totally bummed out the whole way home. The next day, someone at work told me that he survived.
It was a bad day and like the sun coming up he was alive!

Well there are barely any left do to wood and cloth materials
What Amazing Story! Congrats Hintons Family.
