Will say some of the BTS interviews enlighten a bit, such as the editor making the author, Yukinobu Tatsu, read hundreds of Shoujo. Or the author also being an ex-assistant to Fujimoto of Chainsaw man in sheer B-Monster Movie to emasculation drama whiplash. Im equally out of the loop on Shounen so i cant say centralizing on criticizing 2 of the big 3 is fair either or not. Then again its not like we cant judge Soul Eater or Kill la Kill as simply imposing a girl into Beautiful Fighting Girl role than actually embracing femininity (There was that one Shounen Manga which had a boy and girl gain power to summon yokai literally through their bond and i desperately wish i remembered the name) Still, im unsure how accurately we could call Dan da Dan "not like other Shounen Battle shows" beyond having a deeper emphasis on downplaying hot-headed self-destruction and instead building social empathy through romance but idk, still havent seen that "incel romance" vid so i dont think the Anglo-Anime sphere doesnt have a weird genre prejudice regardless
@aqualucasYT i ain't got anything but off-hand hot-takes and whatever drama passes on the Twitter feed, its not like i do proper research and if I did the first thing I'd do is immediately make a heavily provacative anti-gen urobuchi flame piece without any real substance really
Ayase is so relatable to me. Many people who think female character are good say the ones who are just strong and nothing about personality. But momo is like me- obsesses over boys, likes famous people/characters, waiting impatiently to talk to my friend or crush, feeling awkward about having a male friend, getting into others interests, talking about my interests, wearing what I’m comfortable wearing. She’s just cool in general. And on the strength part she doesn’t even have to fight to be useful everything she does it’s important. Also BROWN HAIR AND BROWN EYES LETS GO FINALY!!!
I cannot get enough of Dan Da Dan. It's a very wholesome show (REALLY!) and it tackles coming-of-age in a subverted way like FLCL. It's an instant classic.
Dandadan is coming of age angst told in an environment not as interested in being accepted as it is conveying a feeling of “Yeah, that *is* how that would happen at that age.” The slice of life moments feeling so relatable to the absolute sucker punch of a switch up the next moment is the point. It’s not here to hold your hand, it’s here to explore its own world and characters with respect and in a believable way. It’s focused on humanizing its characters and highlighting that with potentially dehumanizing situations. That creates a dynamic that is largely missed or skipped over, at least in anime, for the more traditional hero saves the day and damsel with his mantra in tact theme we see all the time. It makes a new take on new beginnings seem like a breath of fresh air, and I have to agree. It really is quite a good anime, and it’s setting itself up for the sort of depth and breadth that may just leave it on the scoreboards for decades to come.
Different from other shows, both okarun and momo are protagonists, not full protagonists but half of them, they complete eachother, not only as a coulple but also in the power system, okarun is legs while momo is arms, and we can see it really well in the chase scene of ep 4,its so peak.
I know you made a disclaimer about not being "Up to date" with shonen jump but okarun is hardly this new concept for shonen series. Besides Deku from boku no hero being in the exact same position as the "bullied good-willed nerd", we've already had a bunch of other more passive protagonists in the magazine before. Not counting stuff from harem comedy shows in which being passive is kind of the norm (like to love ru or nisekoi) we've also had Nagisa from Assasination Classroom, Tsuna from Reborn, Allen from D.Gray-man, or even a bunch of older shows like Kenshin in Rurouni Kenshin or the little Yugi from Yugioh. And that's just jump. I'm sure other magazines have way more examples to pick from.
I watch DDD with a regular friend-group, and ep5 made the one who is a big fan of traditional jump titles question whether we should continue watching. He really hated the episode, after being really on-board for the entire first arc.
That's really interesting but it makes sense to me. The genre shift (awkward romance between teenagers) is pretty strong, but I think it's headed in a way that will pick back up if he wants to give it more of a chance. For me, I was squealing like a little girl but I like that stuff lol
@@Kamimashita I like it still, but it's my least favorite episode. I was really interested in where the gender-interaction-dynamic in episode 1&2, (with the paralel unwanted-sexual-advances-by-supernatural-entities, and the cursed codependency-for-survival) was going, and ep 3&4 were largely playing along the plot, without drastically advancing those themes, but ep5, being free to go wherever as the start of a new arc, disapoints, as it doesn't seem super interested in exploring the initial themes more. Assuming Aira plays a large role in the next arc, i bet we'll see more of it soon, but for now, ep5 was like candy: very sweet, but not really filling.
Dandadan is the first time i liked a shonen anime. I dare say it has the potential to become one of my favourites. I don't know why it's this one that finally mad me like a shonen anime. Am i the only one?
(spoiler) I haven't read the manga, just watched 5 eps so far, but I still can't get over how easily she got over aliens trying to r*pe her and shows no signs of trauma and so on, that it's not addressed. I assume that she's just bottling it up now and pulling through and that later on it's gonna come back and be a big deal but still it's so weird. The fact she didn't tell her grandma makes me question their relationship (the grandma doesn't believe in aliens but if she said with a serious face what happened then the grandma would believe it, at best would think the aliens were dome sort of demons instead or something) and the fact that Okarun doesn't seem to get the magnitude of what happened that they didn't talk it over later is also so weird to me, making me wonder whether the author didn't get it how serious it was the scene they created or it's gonna come back later to be appropriately explored.
I also haven't read the manga, but I do think it's worth noting that both protags technically experienced SA during the first episode. I do hope the show tackles the gravity of the situation at some later date; but I can also sorta understand where Momo, as a character, may struggle to make things about herself when Okarun had his genitals EATEN and taken from him by Turbo Granny. She was able to achieve ultimate empowerment and free herself from the situation, while he not only lost his "dong" but found his free will taken from him. I think both kids are leaning on each other out of the shared trauma they experienced that night.
The Aliens tried to Stimulate her Body Via mind Control which lead to her opening up her Chakras and Awakening her Powers. When a person opens up all of their chakras they reach a state of Enlightenment, meaning All of her potential trauma was Erased. The first episode establishes how close she is with her Grandma, There was no need to bring up the assault because it wasn't an issue for her personally. She didn't bring up almost getting murdered by a giant Sumo Alien either. Those were both problems that she solved herself.

3:10 - 3:28 wait... hold on this section stuck particularly with me, i am completely failing to see how that's arrogance or anything you describe? and i don't mean that to debate what you're saying but rather to understand it, i just don't see that kind of behaviour the way you do, despite knowing people do, and i'm just curious to know what leads to seeing lack of self-worth as arrogance especially when said lack of selfworth is showased by wanting others to just make their own choices and go on by themselves while only seeing you as "a possibility that is easy and perfectly acceptable to leave behind, an optional with no worth" i always saw that as the opposite of arrogance, which doesn't mean it's not bad in its own way, just not in an arrogant way. (note: i0ve not watched dandadan so i'm only going off of what's said in the video and lot of my assumptions may be based in both projecting and confirmation bias)
It's no problem, it's a nuanced idea that I struggle to put into words, but that I feel myself and some close friends of mine slipping into from time to time. What I'm trying to say is, oftentimes, depression and lack of self worth manifests itself in ways where you end up making decisions for other people, robbing them of their agency and yourself of opportunity. For example, say you hit it off with someone and you'd really like to ask them on a date, but then you think to yourself "what am I thinking, they would never agree to a date. They probably are only putting up with me so instead, I'll save them the courtesy and stop talking to them." In this instance, you (or your messed up brain rather) is making an assumption (other person doesn't like being around you), and is so sure of that assumption that you act as though you are correct (start distancing yourself). I call that arrogance because 1. you're assuming you can't be wrong and 2. it's a mindset that's very self centered, almost like you think people think about you more than they do (due to anxiety). Does that make sense? I explore the same sort of thing in the "3-Gatsu Isn't About Shogi" video.
@@Kamimashita hmmm... if that can be seen as arrogance... could someone even be able to see that as being assertive? i don't think i ever went as far as saying no in the other person's stead but i definitely did act and talk in the past in a way that would make others favor such an answer (i.e. "it's your choice, but really don't think about me, think about yourself" and things like that) if so... that would finally make me understand a pretty rough event i had happen to me a couple years ago and a similar one recently in which people called me "assertive" despite me acting in what i feel would be the least assertive way possible. i'll also check the other video, i hadn't seen it because i had intentions of watching 3-gatsu eventually, but perhaps i'll check the video regardless.
I love Dandadan too, but isnt it kinda common among great anime to switch between generes effortlessly? Berserk, Dorohedoro, Chainsawman, One Piece, Heavenly Delusion, Made in Abyss They all have horror elements, most have romance, all have hilarious moments.
I see where you're coming from here, but I find that those moments are incorporated more seamlessly into those narratives. They may have those elements, but at the end of the day CSM is *mainly* a thriller, and Berserk is *mainly* a dark fantasy. If you wanted to call either of them a rom com people would look at you funny. Meanwhile Dandadan goes 100% into being whatever genre it is currently, in a way that should feel jarring but that I think works. You would never find the first part of today's episode (5) in any traditional "shounen" anime IMO
