Some kind of cover over the entire pot surface could hold in the heat while cooking the kind of stuff you have there. I imagine the wind is blowing away a large % of your energy.
Maybe just an aluminum cookie sheet upside down with circles cut the size of the pots to keep the wind off the remaining surface of the grill.

Your idea is really good did you use water I tried a similar experiment using a Solar
kettle (vacuum tube) which I purchased from amazon using cooking oil instead. It got to about 145 degrees C in about a couple of hours on a 25 degree C day. I think the same this system can be used as central heating in a building if you put a mirrored vacuum thermos flask based insulated heat storage reservoir underground. For radiating the heat in the building a pipe can be laid on the skirting.

The first one was introduced to the world by Alex Kee from Johor Bahru, Malaysia during the conference of Solar Cookers International in Granada, Spain, July 2006. Alex Kee sold them from 2003 in Southeast Asia. Now, this was the first one.

Several ways I suppose. Remember, heat rises. But in this case it looks like some copper goes down the tubes from the plate/block. I'm thinking the heat would pass through that. You don't always need a fan. You don't need it to make heat rise for example. It does that all by itself.

The tubes are evacuated tubes. They have a vacuum between 2 layers of glass. Down the middle is a copper tube with a small amount of acetone in them. Acetone has a low boiling point. It boils and turns to a vapor and rises. when it gets to the top it condenses and runs back down the copper tube. on the top end of the tube is a copper bulb that extends into the reservoir below the pans. I don't know the exact design but I'm sure it has a liquid to extract the heat from the bulb. Probably water.

Interesting! But, I wonder if a parabolic reflector, focused on a hot-plate, might be a cheaper and more efficient solution? I seem to recall that you get about 2kw/m2 in the warmer parts of SA - So potentially a parabolic dish might concentrate more heat, onto a small area?

How about a large half tube full of oil w/flat plate on top? Though would probably have to fabricate a sheet of copper to make the 'oil burrow' and a feed tube that several cm higher than flat surface, to make sure no air in the half tube...

Thanks, no I did not use water - inside the tube is a copper pipe - they use it for the more expensive systems - then the copper pipe conect to the aluminium and transferring the heat

    • @jimbarron9939
      @jimbarron9939 6 років тому

The system provides only as much heat as far less complex and expensive systems widely used and that use about half of the collection area. It it had effective _circulation_ or the heat, whether by air or a liquid, it would probably deliver a lot more heat. But then it would be more complex and even more expensive.
Kudos for a nice try but it just didn't work out well. A key requirement for a good practical solar oven appears to be concentrate (localized) the energy while it is still light THEN absorb the heat from it - simpler, far easier to track the sun (whether by automatic or manual adjustment) and inherently can be done with far less materials.
The key to good design is to spend a lot of effort in considering all alternative basic approaches initially and select the best one, THEN work on the details.
In this case the key to best design is concentrate and localize the energy while it's still in the form of sunlight.

If you create a parabolic reflector trough the same width as 6 tubes it will create nearly 6 times the amount of heat as 1 tube and save you from buying so many tubes. I know that 3 tubes with a reflector would more than double your heat .
Transfer of heat could be slow unless you create convection for air flow.

Ben Janse van Rensburg I am in the USA. There are many Chinese Suppliers but I feel there are challenges there and would need the help of a purchasing agent or something because there are so many prices offered, some unbelievably low and some very high. The US suppliers of Solar Evacuated Tubes seem so focused on one market, that of supplying complete and expensive systems for domestic hot water for rich homeowners, that they find it hard to muster the energy or courtesy to refrain from hanging up on you, if you are not ready with a credit card number to buy a package for a home. I want to make racks similar to yours that heat Koi ponds, plant ponds, hydroponic plater ponds just a very small amount and that will also distill water with the excess energy. I build mobile tanks that are very insulating, using HP thin-shell Cement technology. I also have a block design, looks like your fryer, that will switch on to make distilled water once the peak temperature of 88 F degrees is achieved. Any ideas on tube suppliers would be helpful. Thanks!

So i bought 2 for replacements and 2 for spares, but you are very correct, it was only the 4th supplier that was willing to help me. Whish you luck !!!

Please, please, please don't underestimate yourself or put yourself down posh, because you are a woman! I can do anything I put my mind to and better than most men. That is sometimes a feat for someone 5'3" and 110 lbs! I taught my sons to use power and hand tools and to fix nearly anything. In fact, my 18, 16, and 15 year old sons and I built a 45' x 18' addition onto our home, and remodeled the rest. The only thing I hired out was the concrete footings, floor, walkway, and drive. We gutted the majority of the rest of the house, upgraded to copper plumbing and new fixtures, new electrical including ethernet. I installed glass and marble tile in kitchen and bath, new cabinets and granite countertops. We even hand built the roof trusses. It is fine to ask for help or instructions, but be proud that you are willing and I'm sure, very capable to do a "man's" job! Here's a tip for all you guys out there. If a woman is in a store to buy building materials, tools, or parts to fix an appliance or car, don't assume that her husband sent her to town. I've had to set both men and women straight on that issue!
