Rufus is a whipping boy for these developers. He should have gotten his happy ending after everything he went through.
there is one problem with this and that is Rufus character development, for him to become a true hero he needs to commit to the selfless sacrifice at the end, so if he went off into the sunset with goal than he wouldnt have matured as a character, he would still be the loveable selfish egomaniac he was at the start of deponia 1. That is why one of his lastline towards goal is "the Real Rufus would never let go". The entire 4th game is just the devs trying to shove that fact into the face of those players unhappy with the ending and you see this theme repeated numerous times through out the playthrough, like the micro cosmus with the platypus in the lab.
Fun fact: First Falcons deponia Doomsday was uploaded 1 year + ago we've come all this way to here.

Well there was one other change Falcon besides Goal getting to say goodbye. Rufus got to see Goal's boobas back when they were distracting that guard.
So he got something out of this game too, least the Devs could do.
The whole thing started because of the Utopians' error with messing with time and with the human error tacked on, it caused the loop; but it was the fixing of the human error that fixed both errors. So both worlds are saved.
Also, the alt timeline Rufus', Goal and Utopians are stuck in the past now with the dinosaurs, so there is that.
Still a solid game though.
I know they meant this to be a troll and a big middle finger, but I half expected there to either be a heavily augmented Rufus who survived, or goal fixing the cloning machine in the final cutscene. Either one would be a smug grin from the devs
The Rufus and Goal from the timeloop should thaw out some time after main Rufus goes splat.
And now you understand why everyone told you that it all was pointless.
My brain hurts, but . . . it's over, good ending.
To me, this was pretty much one big middle finger to everyone hoping for a different ending. Instead of letting it settle it was more 'no no, none of your fan stuff. THIS is how it happens'. Eh, good video this, but i still hold true is the death of the author.
Yeah, it was childish of the developers to antagonize their fans. And they did it poorly too.
Well, they did say that in the intro of the game already if you remember, they said: "At this stage it's evident, there will be no happy end, suck it up princess, no one cares for your tears." So they warned everyone. And I have to say, I am glad they gave us this additional 20 hours (which was a thing they didn't really want to do to begin with) with my favourite characters without cheapening what they wanted to say with the original ending. But now, Goal knows he saved her and they know they love each other. And there are alternative Goal and Rufus stranded in the past, too (if you look at the outro).
I cried my eyes out after Goodbye Deponia and I wish the og Rufus and Goal got a happy ending, but I get why they chose this ending and I respect that they stuck to it.
The writers for that studio always intentionally write dumb stories that give the player the finger and rob the player of any and all agency. It is the worst version of railroading. The writers know the player is powerless to oppose them so they take great glee is fing the player over.
When the writer is openly antagonistic to the player the only way to win is to not buy the game.

A great ending, bringing a bit more closure o a great series.
I played all the deponia games back when they were relesased. And i really liked how Goodbye Deponia ended.
When this one was announced i was a bit skeptical, i felt they were going to ruin Rufus sacrifice there. But it turned out this game kind of was of a middle finger to all the players that were asking for a different ending and was instead doubling down on the original ending. While not as strong as the original trilogy, i really liked this game for it and it gave me a lot of respect for Poki. I hope he comes back some day with a new wacky point and click adventure. Maybe an end the wispered world series, wich i vagely remember ending on a bit of a cliffhanger in the second one.

This has been the message since I was a kid : we will bend time and space five times over to make sure a man and a woman don’t live together in peace.
You know what Rufus could have just pushed the pink elephant through the portal and then have future goal save past Rufus. Which then they both could have gone into the future. Which would have stop the time loop.
Or past Rufus could have us future Rufus as a cushion to soften the impact.

The devs were wrong for this
I feel like if the timeline was fully corrected, they'd have no memory of any alternate events. So the hope i see is the act of trying to change the past and failing, helped changed the future and create hope that another alternate Rufus is still around. not sure, i'd have to review the games events step by step to be sure.

To me I will cherrish every single episode of this game and enjoy rewatching it all via the playlist every few months. Best game ever!

So basically, to break the the loop of timeline, rufus must fall to end the loop. However, it's not rufus fault because the it's start from goal tried to save rufus from dead. The reason why rufus can't remember when future goal save him is because the elephant man erase rufus memory. Finally, the reason rufus manage to break the loop because it's happen to many times and remember everything. The one that manage to break the time loops is rufus from u know the last part :)
The only thing rufus did is stay in the back of time machine the entire whole time while he is injured 27:19
It's quite confusing but rufus did fall so many times. Rufus need to survive the fall to stop the time loop
And they're lives happily forever after in the dinosaur time
...look on the bright side... you now know why people aren't all that keen on Deponia 4 and think the series should have ended with 3... sigh.

Thank you, I enjoyed every second. But, the puzzle at the end is not intended to be try and error. Every step has sense, when you finally put everything together. Also I think, there are no loose ends in their time travel story. Okay, the explanation for the old Goal in interim time is something I might have missed.
I was fine with Rufus dying in the third game, I felt it redeemed him. I heard the developers were antagonizing their fans and thought that was extremely immature. And now faced with the space whale aesop that Goal couldn't determine her own fate or utopian elephants will cut a line and make her splat, I am going to have to side with the disastisfied fans.
Note that a Rufus did survive, the time loop duplicate Rufus and Goal that the utopian elephants kindly froze to keep the timeline the way it was would still thaw in this timeline. A selfish undeserving Rufus survives because he was extended the third option of being removed from history gently, while the sacrificing Rufus and Goal could have been given that option but were not.

that ending..... was so depressing. it was great, but.... it was so sad too. i really liked the message with this game. they cant just the ending of the story.
I remember being so annoyed I just went for a walkthrough instead.

Clearly the dev wanted to make a point to the people who demanded more or a different ending, but honestly I don't mind how this played out. Not all stories have to have a happy ending, and honestly that is why 90% of anime is boring because it always just works out for so many characters, and while this ending may be offense to some it does make a good point about treasuring the journey and not getting hung up on an ending that you didn't like. Generally story heavy games with multiple variations of the ending (Telltale Games for instance, though some are better than others) are best enjoyed by accepting your journey and not trying to get a perfect ending. Also why I hate when these games have achievements that are more than just get to x chapter as it gives away some plot points and requires replaying a game that often feels wrong (or boring) to replay.

I actually liked the ending of this part. If you don't try and focus on the message between the lines, the story isn't half bad and has a decent message - cherish the time that you have instead of focusing on past regrets.
Really smart plot and a good philosophical message. Despite the butthurt fans, I think this was a good play by the devs. The chain of time can't be broken, after all

you know, i flat-out HATED the ending in the third game. and in the end, this one had the same ending. But something about it feels... more appropriate, i think? I'm not sure, really. But I some how actually like the ending in this one. Though, i feel like we could have had a "happy" ending if end-Rufus had just used his own body to cushion Goal so she survived the fall.

i understand why one wouldnt enjoy this ending, obviously youre entitled to your own opinion. but...no need to bash the developers lol. theyre poking fun at their fanbase demanding a different ending after the third game, which i think some people are taking too seriously. the developers humor is reflected in the way they narrate games, and i dont see how this is a bad thing - yeah, its meta to say "everything has to end, deal with it lol" after a reaction like they got out of a fanbase. but i think they handled it well and its all in good fun, i doubt they were genuinely mad at people for it (unless people were being disrespectful or something). i thought this way of ending a game series and conveying a message to their audience was brilliant. to each their own, but i really enjoyed it.
if they were actually trying to piss of people who responded negatively to the end of the third game, they would not have made a fully fletched fourth game that is longer than any of the previous entries of the series. of course the ending is important but lets not forget about the rest of the game. the whole game doesnt suck - you watched it all the way to the end after all - and still deserves credit for that even if you didnt like the ending.
