  • AHHHH, IT'S FINALLY HERE. So glad I put together The Board in order to help me block out scenes ~visually~. Also a late Preptober epiphany has me slightly rearranging said board in order to make Project ☠️☠️......two books??? AHHH.
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
    D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
How'd NaNoWriMo Day 1 go for you??? Was it easier than you expected? More challenging than you'd hoped? LET ME KNOW.
Did you also have a pre-NaNo panic and/or epiphany? Did you switch up your projects at the last minute?
Do you prefer getting your words in for the day all at once or spread out throughout the day? (Or maybe you only have a specific forty-five minutes you can rush to get them done! I've definitely had NaNo's where that was true. Or ones where I was stealing five minutes here and there and everywhere.) What's your "routine" going to look like for this NaNo?

    Happy Writing everyone!
I set myself the challenge of double nano this year because I'm rewriting and I wanted to have that pressure feeling that you get when it's a blank doc facing you down. Thus far, it's been a good call. We'll see how I'm feeling by the end of the month XD
But I'm working on a rewrite draft and a 1st draft of a second thing that I have a lot of pieces worked out so gotta challenge the brain somehow XD

I love that you last minute decided Project Death would be a Duology! I can't wait to read it one day. I feel like I know so much of the story (I mean only what you've told us clearly) and I'm excited to see it out in the world. It will happen! Love that you're doing Yoga with Adrienne everyday and I'm looking forward to hearing about how you feel about the results afterwards. Like does it get easier to stick to it as the month goes on? Does it make your body feel better? That kind of stuff. I wish I could remember the little bit of crotcheting that I learned how to do, way back when I was like 10 lol. Looking forward to seeing the word scarf and its progression. Looks like you're off to a great start to NaNo Kate! Make sure to take care of your eyes as well. See you on the streams lol.

I’m starting my second attempt of NaNoWriMo this year, and it’s a whole new project. I made a rough outline for what I think which chapter is gonna be about like subplots. The only panic I had so far is that I didn’t wake up as early in the morning as I wanted to start writing. Still I feel more prepared than last year.

I'm unable to participate in Nano as my end-of-the-year obligations are simply too much, but I'm excited to see everyone's work! I'm so happy you've come to the conclusion that Project Death is a duology! With as much as this book has refused to submit to your intended word count, I couldn't help but think "Yeah Kate, maybe it wants to be more than one book." lol! I have come to the conclusion that I'm simply unable to write a standalone, as my word count gets ridiculous by the midpoint. I am of Duology and Trilogy girly and unashamed to say it! So excited for the daily vlogs!

Bahaha I am SO happy the epiphany (and everyone else's advice) finally clicked lolol. The next time I attempt to write a standalone I'm really going to be side-eyeing myself and checking in with the possibility it wants to be more bahaha.
Hope all your end-of-year obligations go well!!

As always I feel like I'm the total chaos gremlin of Nano. I decided that I will participate in Nano on the first of November at 3pm while I was on my lunch break. I will try to finish my zero draft of my story, that has just the characters and the worst outline known to mankind for it being in the fantasy genre. 😂 Wish me luck on this one. I'm already behind.

Happy Nano!! I’m so glad you figured out what you needed to for Project Death. I started writing a bit ago. I’m having some Chapter 1 struggles right off the bat. I’m writing a fantasy cozy mystery and it’s the fun stuff of trying to get world and characters established but in a natural way instead of an info dump. I’m also writing first person pov which I don’t normally do. I’m finding it easier and harder at the same time! Best Nano wishes to us all!!

I had most of my preptober done for a story I started several years ago, but never finished. I planned to rewrite the story. I was so excited I started NaNo at about 2 a.m. and got in about 900 words before I realized that I wasn't in the mood to write this story, as much as I love it, my heart just wasn't in it. Before I knew it, I was already plotting and outlining a new story. I already have 2000 words written into the new story. Good luck to everyone participating in NaNo this year! May the words flow with you!

And YES! No having to cut out the parts I love so much, they're integral and need to stay (just in duology format) lolol. Truly is the best solution that I was (willfully?) oblivious to for so long.

I was too tired to roll my dice to decide what projects I would work on last night so I just decided to split the 50k between three of them. I was so nervous for November to get here, but my writing today went really well and it wasn’t as hard as I imagined it might be. I’m probably going to write more later to get ahead since I’ll be at Disney for a week this month and don’t want to have to get the full words while I’m there. I’m currently working full time, so I’m waking up at 5am to get words in in the morning and then doing a sprint on my lunch break as well. I aimed to go from pantsing / plantser to full on plotter by the end of October. I panicked first thing this morning that I had not achieved as much plotting on my novel and screenplay as I wanted. I managed to complete a chapter of my novel and about 4 to 5 pages of screenplay written off the outlines and plot maps I had, plus I have already planned and chunked down and scheduled my month for both projects. It ended up going a lot better than I expected. I seem to work best as a planster.

I think a duology is perfect. You can have the scenes that you think is still needed but cut (or planned to cut) while still strengthening the story. Especially since you said you might query this one, it'll be easier to sell this standalone that would make a stronger duology.
I haven't prioritized writing these last few weeks so who knows what I am going to do this month.

  • @essysdean61042
    @essysdean61042 8 місяців тому +1

Day one definitely went better than I thought and the words came easier than I expected. I'm continuing my experiment in script writing and I haven't drafted anything new that wasn't a short story in a while, so I wasn't sure how well those two things were going to combine. It felt good though to be working on something new.
Luckily I seem to have skipped the pre-NaNo panic this year, but that doesn't mean I'm not still panicking because I have no idea what I'm doing with writing a screenplay. I've written stage plays before, but this a new world and new formatting (thank goodness for Scrivener templates).
I have a stretch goal of trying to finish this entire project, but I did the math and it's like 80,000 words. Not sure if it's going to be successful. Usually I like getting my words for the day in long bursts, but I'm working around a lot of work things this year, so I'll have to see if that's as successful or if I'll revert to what I did in college when I was writing when I could. The hope would be getting all my work stuff in the morning and then having afternoons and evenings to work on NaNo things, but I also love an early morning writing session during NaNo. A NaNo routine? What are those?
I also might work on some Merlin (2008 British TV series version) or Les Miserables fan fiction, but the script writing experiment might take over. We'll have to see.

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  8 місяців тому +1

Ahhhh, I love that you're challenging yourself to something entirely new though! The formatting for screenplays has definitely thrown me off and taking some getting used to. I'd love to try a whole month of solely focusing on that so I can really drill it into my brain bahaha.
Also loooooooove Merlin! So good and still such a fun rewatch. Maybe that should be my reward at the end of the day, turn my brain off and watch Merlin bahaha. GOOD LUCK with all your goals!

I will not be starting Nano until this weekend. We are so busy with school right now working on developing a television talk show. Tomorrow we are visiting the set of the Norwegian version of Dancing with the Stars. But this weekend I am planning on doing a buttload of stuff.
I am working on a screenplay which I wrote last month. I am currently rewriting and working on making it better.

I will definitely keep you updated! Right now I'm planning to keep it ~mostly~ the same, with the exception of having reshuffled the midpoint by a couple scenes. I can imagine the end of Book 1 and start of Book 2 will need some extra attention to really make them feel like solid stories in their own right and that I didn't completely just cut it in half bahaha. I'm sure I'll find out some of this later in November! 😂

Because of overlapping project goals I'm actually editing a book and drafting for nano at the same time which I've never done before. I hope I can still be productive at least and get something done.

came up with an idea a couple of days ago. I have a... somewhat sense of things I want to happen and the characters and the general ~vibe~. I've already written over 3200 words today so it's going great. I did over 2k of that as soon as it hit midnight and a bit more this morning. I'm about to continue I think. I generally write through the entire day. If I'm too slow at writing, I find I lose motivation lol. I work best as a fast drafter I suppose.
It is a little nerve-wracking tho cuz I have found I'm best if I plot things but the only thing i currently have plotted is what I was working on this summer and while I do hope to pick that back up at some point, i'm not feeling the genre at the moment and am craving writing darker romance so I decided... I'll just write something! lol

im making significant changes to a current work in progress, completely rewriting large sections of the book and adding a lot of new content. today being day one i managed 2500 words, not unhappy considering i dind't spend as much time writing as i had intended. im not aiming for the 50k this year im more concerned with making the right changes to my current book, as I'm hoping to get this version of edits done before xmass so i can badger my friends and family to read it when they have time off.

For me, this is not my first NaNoWriMo. It's the first one I'm determined to finish, because I learnt a lot about story- and characterbuilding this year, so I'm more prepared now. I could've outline the chapters as well to make it easier, but didn't have a time for it. But with the story itself being structured, it was definitely easier to start. I had my daily goal in two parts but managed to reach it in almost one sitting (almost because I had to help around the house and have lunch). I just hope that this working moral of mine stays until the very end >

@@KateCavanaugh I have a basic outline of chapter on 1st post it, like a couple sentences. Then on top of that I write on a separate post it the different scenes that need to happen in that chapter. Then on a different pot it I write up significant events in that chapter to keep me on track with timeline, like character birthdays or public holidays. As I write each scene I give the post it a big tick

I haven't even finished writing chapter one of my "Standalone Fantasy" yet and I'm already afraid it's gonna become a duology or maybe even a series. I didn't have a last minute Preptober epiphany, I had an early NaNoWriMo epiphany because as soon as the clock hit midnight and I sat down to write, I realized a better way to start my novel and basically threw away about 3 chapters I've already fully outlined 🤷🏻‍♀️. Oh, well. It is what it is.

I write in the early evening, and the project I am currently working on is a "Robinson Crusoe In Space" - and I am really concerned that I am not going to keep my attention on this project. 🙃 Today went really well, I managed 1818 words and I managed some work on the first chapter which, being a discovery draft, is promising. But it is space fiction, and I am not the strongest when it comes to science. Like, I know there is gravity and it makes apples fall but that is about it - I can not map out the gravity well of stars or planets or anything else. I mostly write fantasy so I am SO out of my comfort level. But hey, it's an interesting seed.😁

So I originally didn’t think I was going to be participating in NaNo (I haven’t in a few years now) but since I figured I had a brand-new project, I would do it [I decided today, Nov 1 haha]. I’m not going to be going off of words though, I’ll just be trying to think and work towards my project every day, then count that as my ‘daily goal met.’ If I think I do half the work I think I could have, I’ll have myself progress by half the ‘words’ for that day’s par. It’s going to be a fiction podcast anyway, so I don’t think that words is the best way to track it anyway.
I also succumbed to the temptation of making a physical tracking board. I don’t have a whiteboard, unfortunately, but I do have a roll of brown wrapping paper I taped to my bedroom wall and put boxes on so I could add sticky notes lol. It’s makeshift, but it (might) work.
NaNo day 1 went kinda slow for me, honestly, but I’m hoping to pick up momentum during your stream. And I work in 15-20 minute bursts alone (I make exceptions for streams lol) with at least five minute breaks in between, at least until I feel the words start to run out. I can usually get a good hour or so in.

I started at midnight. Didn't have anything other than an idea and a couple of characters. As always, the second I started writing, the story started to unfold. I've been doing NaNo since 2005 though so I'm used to not knowing what I'm doing when I start. 😆

I AM ALSO EDITING, amd I track by input meaning: if i bring a chapter with 2k to edit and i cut 1k, i count the 2k scene i had. Because if i need to delete a chapter, i need to delete it!

I am also revising and I'm tracking by the amount of words I've edited that day. So if the scene is 500 words before editing that's how many I count since I technically do work on all those 500 words.

I did Camp Nano for a fanfic a few years ago, and won my goal of 20k words. I'm writing a fanfic for a different fandom now and I'm aiming for 20k words again because then I'll be able to enter it into a Big Bang and get some art done for it. I haven't written in a long time, but I've been mulling this idea over for a few months now. I feel like the characters are tired of me thinking and they want me to just get on with it so their story can be told! Also, I want it to be out of my brain and on paper so I can stop thinking about it all the time, lol.
And honestly I really miss the feeling of having a completed longer work. I just felt so proud, it was lovely. Such satisfaction! Hopefully I'll have another finished draft at the end of this month, though I have a feeling it's gonna end up way more than 20k words... I think I'll be relying on your Twitch streams like I did last Camp, I love the sense of community and how encouraging everyone is.
I'm happy to hear you've had a breakthrough with Project Death; I've been watching your channel for probably five years now so I've heard a lot about it, and I'm always pleased when you get a step closer to publishing it so I can read it. Good luck with Nano, thanks for all the great work you do! It's helped me such a lot over the years, I owe many words and completed projects to you :)
