    Learn more about the music:
Born to a biochemist father in the extraordinarily musical village of Rudrapatna, Shashank Subramanyam started learning early in life. He mastered all 72 Melakarta scales by the age of two-and-a-half, prompting a research team to study his prodigious talent. His first musical immersions were with singing and violin, but he fell in love with the venu flute as soon as he picked it up, focusing on it from that point onwards.
Initially he taught himself, but soon entered the gurukul as a student of legendary flute maestro T.R. Mahalingam. His guru insisted that he should continue his vocal training, and avoid listening to other top masters of the day in order to develop his own style. The approach worked, and his tireless study led to the creation of new forms of gamaka and breathing techniques. He has incorporated overblowing and novel hand positions, and immersed himself into the grammar of Hindustani music too, frequently collaborating with artists from the North. Over the past decade he has worked with artists including Paco de Lucia, Terry Riley, and Remember Shakti, and is today recognised as the finest venu exponent alive. Listen to more of Shashank here:

Hamsanadam translates to ‘call of swans’. The creature has rich associations in Indian culture - Saraswati, the goddess of music and learning, is often depicted atop a swan, and it is said to symbolise purity, discernment, and the process of breathing. Hamsanadam’s pentatonic simplicity invites the listener to return to nature, taking the symmetric form SR₂M₂PN₃S. It is a janya raga, derived from the parent scale Neetimati (60th melakarta ragam).
Recorded at Darbar in 2017, at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu:
    -Shashank Subramanyam (venu)
    -Patri Satish Kumar (mridangam)

We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

In Shashank we have the best flautist and what a wonderful Hamsanadam and pulsating swara prastarams. In mridhangam the synchronization of 'meetu' and 'chapu' is absolutley essential and what a wonderful unison . Great kriti

No question that Shashank has super fast fingers, probably the fastest set of fingers on a flute. He is certainly capable of using his talents wonderfully. This is why I don't get it when he uses some tactics, such as his "tabla" style of fast movements with his right fingers, around the 7 min mark. If you are a flute player, you will know what I am talking about. Basically, in Hamsanadam raga, you only use the right hand fingers (for right-handed players) to produce the Pa and Ma. If you look carefully, the fourth hole from the top is completely open when he resorts to these "tabla" movements. It is impossible to produce Pa and Ma on a flute with this hole open. So what is the point of these movements - to give the impression of extreme speed capability? That is not right.

Siva Subra I am a flute student and have followed and even had clarifications regarding the percussion like technique. I was present at his in-depth lecture demonstration at The Music Academy couple of years back where in he demonstrated this technique and spoke at length. Your statement on fourth finger is absolutely incorrect and misleading. If you notice, the Tabla technique as you call it, comes in only when playing the three or four notes on the upper or lower octave namely Sa, Ni, Ri, Ga, and with high intensity blowing technique he can produce the prati madhyamam on the upper octave using the ni fingering. Shashank can also comfortably produce suddha madhyamam using the open ga fingers, a very difficult one to do. Production of these four notes do not need the use of the right hand and is a correct technique.

It is not a tabla. It is a mridangam. Mridangam head has a more BUZZY sound. It is just the tradition. Tabla buzz means a malfunctioning tabla... but in mridangam this is a perfectly normal and pleasing sound. Cheers.
