I think it’s awesome they are releasing a revised version as it shows that Valve views the Deck as a more console like option. Also even though I don’t have one I agree gameplay is smoother than Windows as I have recently installed Ubuntu on a separate drive and I think gameplay is smoother due to how proton handles the games along with pre-shader caching that SteamOS and Linux does through proton that allows the game to already have those assets running as each game I have played, Resident Evil, Halo, Counter Strike 2 and etc run smooth with no lag or stutter
I'm completely sold on the 512GB Deck 1.5 I'm making an active effort to be one of the first people in line for it. I don't plan to go very AAA on it since I have a PC, but I don't want to be at my PC every time I want to play something lighter. I want it to be that lower-power gaming monster it's touted to be Now With Eye-Popping Colors™ I want Valve to get my money because of the effort they're putting into the Linux gaming experience that I have never seen anybody remotely come close to. I want this to take off. I want to be a part of it. It's amazing to me how they figured out a way to shave weight off of Deck 1.0, just amazing
I don't game on the go as much anymore, nor do I own a Steam Deck, but watching this video and seeing what Valve is doing is a plus for consumers. I say this upgraded SD won't get me to buy one. For me, power doesn't matter to me as much on a "portable" gaming device. I care about battery life, size, and the library more than power on a Steam Deck. Having a Steam account, I can say Valve has the healthiest gaming library right now out of the gaming space. 2-3 hours for a AAA game on a Steam Deck is fine, I rarely play more than 1-2 hours on a game even on dedicate consoles anyways. What I really like to see is a size decrease, maybe a Steam Deck SE where they shrink the size, get rid of the extra bells and whistles, keep WiFi 6e or whatever, and a 1080p display with that bigger battery. Maybe just a niche ask.
I would argue that's not a niche ask. I think the reality is that right now there are probably a set of disappointing tradeoffs in regards to designing a smaller deck. It might not be possible to make it smaller than what it already is now. My feeling is that Valve's strategy is to wait until the hardware world improves before making Steam Deck 2. Part of the brilliance in what Valve is doing is taking what already exists and fitting together like a puzzle to create a compelling device that has all the right tradeoffs. These tradeoffs pertain to internal design, performance metrics, software design, ergonomic design, and maybe something else I'm forgetting. I'd like to believe that Valve will do exactly what you're suggesting and I'd be hyped if they do! :D
They made the power supply cable longer. I actually use one for my tablet (it wont charge on regular usb sadly) and it just barely doesn't reach when I'm in class so i have to put it in the very corner where it's not usable.
I could cry I got the basic steam deck a month ago and now for the same price I could of gotten an updated version or the oled 😭 I’m seriously devastated.
Then there's me ordering one earlier this week. Imagine my shock when I open Steam to find Valve announce the new OLED. I'm okay with it though. Besides the display, it's not a big performance uplift for me to want to return the regular one.
better battery life, bigger screen, fan is quieter, a bit lighter, brighter and crisper screen and same price as the old version. its a nice updated version. Valve is working windows to be dual-booted with Steam OS, so you don't have to load it up via SD card. That's nice..it means lots of windows games will work.
Honestly theres not any reason to upgrade if you alreqdy have a steam deck. I dont have any issues with the steam deck even though its not the most powerful. I love the os, linux just fits for this sort of thing.
I'm excited, a handheld companion to my desktop is making more and more sense for me and I've been eyeing the deck for a while. All these improvements as well as the price makes me very happy that I'm in the market now
The EVEN CHEAPER 64GB LED Steam Deck would be worth it if you got a stock price or refurbished steam deck 64 gb from Valve (or refurbished from gamestop as well as valve) and you know how to install a new SSD in it.
The ROG ALLY is on sale for $600-$620. The Legion is $699. You can find open box for less than the OLED Steam Deck. Steam OS is coming to other handhelds.
Havent bought into this handheld PC market yet, but I'm 100% going Steamdeck OLED. Windows on a handheld is so clunky; don't care to be frustrated & tinkering for 30 minutes, at which point the battery dies. I tried the ROG Ally at BB, preloaded demo of Forza Horizon 4...crashed on opening first time. Finally got into gameplay and the controls weren't mapped(way off, unplayable), ON A PRELOADED DEMO! yeah, no thanks!
The pre-owned steam decks are also on sale. They have both the middle and high models in stock. But also I am debating on buying the new high end model. I have the original high end model now
I really like that you have different points of view and its good to hear compared to other podcast style tech channels. I like that matt is still sticking up for the original steam deck and Austin is so into the oled and dissing the original lol
As far as I'm concerned, It doesn't matter how powerful the hardware is if the software can't give you a pleasant experience would be too frustrating to use. This comes from having both the steam deck and ROG Ally. I use the Ally and exclusively for games that require the power and that I would sit down to play plugged into a wall. I use the steam deck when I want to Go somewhere away from an outlet and play something like hollow Knight while I'm waiting for the doctor to call me in. Practically speaking, I don't play demanding games on the steam deck because I don't see it as a system to do that on. I would use my gaming rig or the ROG Ally that can give me some nice higher graphics settings, whereas I use the steam deck for the light titles that I could play on the go.
Bro, have you ever heard about indie games? A lot of people play indie games on the steam deck and the 90 hz screen it makes sense for that kind of games
thats a good upgrade although its the same situation like switch oled. I own a steamdeck & first gen switch. 95% of time i use them docked, 5% of them i do enjoy the portable mode, the OLED varients nice but i dont think its worth upgrading.
I tend to ignore refresh of hardware, but this is exciting, I'm not sure why. I already own an original 512 GB Steam Deck LCD. It has to be the limited edition that looks awesome AF. Anyway, this time, Valve pushes the limits for what I have been begging for. OLED Screen, better battery, and thermals. They successfully shut me up, and now I have to pay them.
I don't play a lot of games, I usually stick to 3 at a time. I have an RPG, I have the new Mario Wonder, and I have an idle game. The RPG is too weird to play w/ a controller. Idle makes no sense to use Steam Deck, and Wonder is on the Switch... so right now, no handheld that plays Steam games will be ideal. When I played Monster Sanctuary on Steam, this could have been nice. If Palworld is really fun, maybe I'll get a Steam Deck for that.
I have the 64gb model...big mistake....sure you can fiddle around with it or get someone to do it but seriously I'd rather get the 1TB OLED at this point...chuck in my 512 gb sd card for good measure and not worry about space anymore. AND in spite of all the changes I still get to use all my accessories. I've watched about 10 videos today lol....the haptics are way better too. For me it's going to be one heck of an upgrade.
If you want to play modern AAA games you kinda need the go... But if you play indies visual novels or emulated retro it would be the steam deck... The real question you need to ask yourself is do I NEED that extra power and am I willing to spend an extra 300 quid or so.
@@Antisocialnerd2no you don't. I own an Ally and a deck. Deck for AAA 30-40 fps low to medium settings. Ally 40 to 60ish fps medium to high settings. The Allys battery life is bad though and it eats SD cards. The screen is amazing though .... but the Deck OLED being HDR and OLED is going to put a big dent in that.
@@eagle_rb_mmoomin_418 Pc master race is generally pretty snobby and a lot of them consider anything less than 60fps to be unplayable. Personally I'm fine once I get over 30fps since I grew up with atari and Sega but the steam deck is struggling with current titles I would definitely say if your primary goal was to play AAA games then the extra 300 quid or so for almost five times the power is definitely worth it.
@@Antisocialnerd2 yes but which one is better for like if you did want to use it like a computer which one is better for media and for browsing the web and for doing games on I don’t need the best performance. @@BeardsBaconTech Then it's unquestionably the legion go since it runs windows 11 so you will be able to use all the standard windows programs for school etc The steam deck uses a Linux based steam os so much harder to do school projects etc.
You can already over clock it your self, doesn't really improve much, now overclocking ram is a different story Which by the way, is what the OLED version has, a boost in ram speed, so performance increase in games that benefit from that Which means overclocking this one's ram is going to be even better
im surprised people want to play triple A games on it, just get an Ally, I have such a huge back log of games that even reach out to the 90s in terms of when they were made that all will run beautifully on the steam deck.
As per building trust in Valve: My most played game is Fortnite. By far. And it doesn't run on Steam Deck. And still I'm thinking of getting this Steam Deck OLED just because I can just unplug my game library SSD from my desktop or laptop and put it into my Steam Deck and it works perfectly. Thanks for working on that Windows Steam Deck video, I will be watching it closely
If I could play COD MW2 without having to put windows on it, I would totally be down with this. Instead, I’ve got the Legion Go, but the windows experience is … whew…
For me the difference between 512GB & 1TB model is 100€, if I am to buy a 1TB the cost for it is 150€, I rather just buy the 1TB version directly and save 50€
It’s so good to hear the new oled model fan is quieter. Cuz I got the old deck and the fan is so crazy loud! One time I even thought our next door is mowing the lawn! I ended up selling it.
It's too bad the display also wasn't VRR capable. If valve had managed to get a VRR range of 30-90 on the deck that would have killed. Just get your performance above 30 and let the VRR smooth out the rest. I'm just so used to not having to worry about screen tearing or dealing with vsync on my main rig that it always feels like a big step back playing a non-VRR capable device/panel/TV.
Also the Ally uses LFC so even playing games in the 30 fps range will be so much smoother than the Steam Deck or Legion Go as it doubles the framerate so it will play at 60 to 70 fps. For gaming VRR is more important than OLED to me and I have the LG C2 42 inch and 55 inch models which have GSync.

Yes I get that it kind of sucks having just bought one and then a new one gets announced but some people are in a panic now. Your Deck is not obsolete. It is still the best handheld pc you can buy right now. Enjoy it.
I have a 256 and 512 models i hope I can still get a 64Gb model to run windows on!!! I am going to guess it will become more expensive when they go out of stock!!!
This is good and all, but as usual in my country the Steam Deck is more expensive than the ROG Ally. Also, I have a lot of games from GOG, EGS, and have a Game Pass subscription. Steam Deck for me, while an astonishing handheld, is not very practical for my use case and for my budget.

Its a great handheld, but don't dock it. The performance takes a nose dive. Get the legion go or ally z1x if you need to dock.
RIP PlayStation Portal, my money is on the Steam Deck OLED.
You're comparing a guy with no arms or legs to Michal Phelps
45fps translates to 2 frames per second with the 90hz display. how do people not get that?
Which one is better the Legion go or the steam deck OLED
I just wanna be able to play my games well enough and be able to watch my movie streaming services and to do a little bit of school
@@BeardsBaconTech Then it's unquestionably the legion go since it runs windows 11 so you will be able to use all the standard windows programs for school etc
The steam deck uses a Linux based steam os so much harder to do school projects etc.
Figures this gets released right as I'm trying to sell mine, lol
Jedi Fallen order and correct me if I'm wrong but spider man remastered and spider man miles morales can do 90 hrs
can i put a oled screen on my steam deck thats no an oled with parts???
@twinturboray I did and you can't maybe you should use Google also.
Why Austin doesnt play BG3 via steam link? He could play it for hours and not one. You dont need super low latency in BG3 I think
Me still happy with my 256gig Steam Deck and calmly waiting for second gen
Good job Valve!!!!!!!
I'm so uprading. I'm not a giant pc gamer so the Deck has treated me so right.
I don't have a steam deck yet but I was looking at getting one in March
Why are you waiting till March?
They should and still might have AMD give a slight OC to the chip at the cost of the battery savings and heat reduction.
You can already over clock it your self, doesn't really improve much, now overclocking ram is a different story
Which by the way, is what the OLED version has, a boost in ram speed, so performance increase in games that benefit from that
Which means overclocking this one's ram is going to be even better
Steam Deck OLED or Lenovo LegionGo?
im surprised people want to play triple A games on it, just get an Ally, I have such a huge back log of games that even reach out to the 90s in terms of when they were made that all will run beautifully on the steam deck.
So, do us original steam deck owner have a chance to upgrade parts? Battery and the OLED screen?
Unfortunately not. The external shell is the same shape, but the internals are all different. Battery/Screen are different sizes
From Valve (via Gamers Nexus) no. Definitely not the battery, it's thicker (because the OLED is thinner) and a different shape.
@@GammaFn. Boooooo! I'll just wait for v2
This is amazing
Hi I would like to reach out about you’re Austin evans extended warranty you should consider replacing you’re Austin seems defective
If I could play COD MW2 without having to put windows on it, I would totally be down with this. Instead, I’ve got the Legion Go, but the windows experience is … whew…
Can the other guy on the left talk?
Has anyone managed to overclock the ram?
For me the difference between 512GB & 1TB model is 100€, if I am to buy a 1TB the cost for it is 150€, I rather just buy the 1TB version directly and save 50€
Linux OS HDR and OLED Invasion. happy linux gaming
It’s so good to hear the new oled model fan is quieter. Cuz I got the old deck and the fan is so crazy loud! One time I even thought our next door is mowing the lawn! I ended up selling it.
I LOVE THIS IS
It's too bad the display also wasn't VRR capable. If valve had managed to get a VRR range of 30-90 on the deck that would have killed. Just get your performance above 30 and let the VRR smooth out the rest. I'm just so used to not having to worry about screen tearing or dealing with vsync on my main rig that it always feels like a big step back playing a non-VRR capable device/panel/TV.
since when do games have screen tarring anymore?
Also the Ally uses LFC so even playing games in the 30 fps range will be so much smoother than the Steam Deck or Legion Go as it doubles the framerate so it will play at 60 to 70 fps. For gaming VRR is more important than OLED to me and I have the LG C2 42 inch and 55 inch models which have GSync.
It could have that wide body kickstand...

MS. SURFACE Pro... and Stylus support too... with that awesome upgrade...🙌✍️
Similar path like Switch 👀🧐
Simply amazing , hope Is more lightweight too
30 grams lighter
It's THIRTY grams lighter 😮
I bought my steam deck first gen last year... Lol it's gonna last for a long time, until I buy the OLED. Or... Legion go. They did a great job, but the price... I'm going to the steam deck
I just got the Legion go!
I might get the mid model tho i found that i dont care about a special case and some digital bs
Is going to be better....
why cnt i preorder :(
id of bean happy with them selling a 1tb ssd with steam os on it
This just made my Steam Deck obsolete
I'll be eBaying mine or the local FB market place.
And Steam Deck is still not available in many areas around the world. Valve needs to step up their game and make this device available everywhere.
I am good with my steam deck. I got the 64gb model and upgraded the ssd to 2tb and I have a 1.5tb sd card. I kinda wish i would have waited but i didnt.. So i have to live with it. No, Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda is going to help me now 😂
buy a 512, insert your old ssd and sd card, put the new 512GB ssd in the old Steam deck sell it.
I heard you have to put the original ssd in the deck befor you can rma it though sadly.
windows 12 NEEDS native support for gaming handhelds if they want a fighting chance for adoption
i'll wait until the Deck2 to get one, tho the screen is nice.
I prefer efficiency than having too much power the Nintendo switch is a system that shows what efficiency can achieve
so i have a steam deck with lcd does that mean that my steam deck is now obsolete
direct from r/steamdeck
PSA: Your LCD Steam Deck is not suddenly obsolete now that the OLED model has been announced.
Yes I get that it kind of sucks having just bought one and then a new one gets announced but some people are in a panic now. Your Deck is not obsolete. It is still the best handheld pc you can buy right now. Enjoy it.
Oled with anti glare or nah
Same question here.
I have a 256 and 512 models i hope I can still get a 64Gb model to run windows on!!! I am going to guess it will become more expensive when they go out of stock!!!
?
1. why do you need 2 decks
2. its not the kind of thing where people will go "I'm a collector and i need a 64GB version to complete my collection"
@@bland9876 It is me... I need the collection!!!
@@emilyterral747 please tell me you forgot the /s lol
Legion vs OLED Steam deck hurry and make it please
I’m not even kidding I bought the normal steam deck 2 days ago time to Start returns
If you ask them they will give you the price difference between the old price and the new price. No need to do a full return.
Now please compare it to the lenovo legion go
Indie games exists. Which is 80% of my SD library? Who buys a steam deck and expects performance for the price?
its the year for linux gaming and im happy, as a daily linux user. btw i use ubuntu gnome :)
This is good and all, but as usual in my country the Steam Deck is more expensive than the ROG Ally. Also, I have a lot of games from GOG, EGS, and have a Game Pass subscription. Steam Deck for me, while an astonishing handheld, is not very practical for my use case and for my budget.
