We have Aphonopelma chalcodes (Western Desert Tarantula, Mexican Blonde Tarantula) here in Southern New Mexico. I saw my first one last summer in our kitchen garden. I imagine it was on the hunt for the many lizards that scurry about there. They can move out darned fast when they're startled. It ran up the rock wall underneath the Japanese Honeysuckle. It was one of those experiences wherein I felt disbelieve, like did I really see that? It was quite impressive. My mother finds dead young scorpions in the back of her closets from time to time. These species are beautiful and fascinating creatures. I was stung right in the carotid by a wasp many years ago. man did I get sick! It took me a week to fully recoup. Wow! I'm glad your still alive after all of your creature challenges! Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us.

It was actually scary when we started putting it all down on paper the amount. It’s kind of freighting to think that several of those could’ve needed me. Now I have four daughters and a wife that all depend on and need their Dad/husband around so I’m far more careful now and try to not put myself in any of those situations.

Hey Biggsy. Had my fare share of venomous snakes, including number one in the world, the Inland Tiapan under my Zoo licence ( Australian spelling ). My son was hospitalized by a Collett's Black Snake for 9 days, and came back from it with brain damage as it is a neurotoxin. Really touch and go, there for a while. A compression bandage was a large part of what saved his life at the start. I had to fight with the Doctors over what antivenom to use. Shocking to find out just how ill educated our doctors are, considering we have the most venomous snakes in the world here. I might sound like a bad herpetologist, creating a situation where a child can be bitten. However, when the snake was recaptured and returned to it's enclosure, the enclosure was already fully locked, and it is sealed. To this day we still don't know how it escaped. And speaking of Lionfish, my elderly dive partner was tagged by a volatan out on the reef. I had to drive his boat. Never operated one before so that was challenging . My only envenomation was when the current suddenly surrounded me with several hundred jelly fish. Oh yeah, better add paper wasps to that. Good episode, Brother.

Damn Jason You live the same crazy life down under as Ive done over here. Your son have any issues years later? Shit I forgot about Jellyfish but funny story was when we were diving in Bermuda. The local guy had the FULL dive suit, socks etc... I had the shorty (shorts and t-shirt sized one) once in the water he said to watch out for the jellyfish...which of course were clear...jerk lol. I never got stung but a couple bounced of my mask which was the only way I would've ever seen them...and I was out lol.
I wont keep the dangerous stuff anymore. One mainly because of my wife and kids depend on me and second because I don't trust my reflexes the same anymore.
Love hearing from you my friend.
You must have been offline when I asked the question yesterday but I sure hope that you are safe. My news is all facebook driven as we don't have cable tv just netflix. The news from what I see your entire country is ablaze. It looks absolutely gutting.

Hey Brother, I was thinking that was where you were heading from your leading sentence, before you cut out. Yeah, these fires are pretty bad down here. However people need to understand this is a dry country and this is nothing new here. While this is one of the worst I've seen, it is nothing new. I've lived through three just like this and it happens in cycles of every 8-10 years and it's the same with reef die off. It is a natural event and is the swing between two cycles called El-Nino and El-Mina, it's when the currents and the trade winds rotate. This creates the correct environment, but not the cause. Did you know there has been 182 arrests for arson since late November? Don't hear much about that. do we? There is a lot of hype, from the media, politicians and celebrities using this to forward an agenda. For them this is not even a real experience, for those who are living through it, that is just disrespectful. Trying to use these people as tools and puppets to launch a platform to further a agenda. Makes me want to smash my TV set, several times a day as these charlatans leak fake crocodile tears. We have lost 27 souls, over 2,000 homes and millions of acres and so much unique wildlife, it's pretty heart breaking. The forests will mostly bounce back quickly, most trees here evolved to germinate through fire ( that should tell people something in it's self). Sadly, the animals may take decades to recover. You asked, where I am down here. I'm on the Gold Coast ( bottom of South East Queensland ), the worst I've experienced thus far is the City being blanketed with thick smoke, right through the house for a week and a half, and everything covered in thick ash. So we are very thankful, and for those who are effected our thoughts are with you. My comments above are by no means to make light of your experience or to be disrespectful. As for my 15 year old boy Conan, he has permanent neurological problems and is in special school. I am pretty gutted as a parent, and feel responsible as a herpetologist it was my responsibility to ensure his safety. To this day, I still can't fathom how this happened as when, I went to return the snake, the enclosure was still locked and sealed.Yeah, I hear you Brother! Family responsibilities come first! I don't feel my reflexes are as sharp these days either. And as for the jellyfish and a short wetsuit. Spare a thought for me, I was NAKED! Nah! just messing with ya mind. Ha ha. Catch ya soon Biggs.

I used to have an 8” female emperor scorp. Must have bred in the pet store, because She birthed 32 squishy white babies. I raised four of them up in a communal enclosure.
Never been bit or stung by any of my scorps or tarantulas though.
