I have had a grate deal of questions about the TM500 and TM5000 series units from Tektronix. This was a video that I put together to hopefully help in the decision-making process when picking TM500 and 5000 Units. As well as some traps that are can be avoided.
** Repair exposes the Tech to mains electric and should only be done by trained personal. Errors can be fatal. **

Excellent information on both of the 500 and 5000 series. I purchased two 5000 series frames, one rack mount that I will use in my server rack and one for trouble shooting modules. The majority of modules I see for sale seem to have been neglected, used and abused. I would trouble shoot the basics on the modules before installation. I look forward to more of these great videos. Thanks again for the useful information.

I want to build a 500 plug in that just brings every voltage and the 2 power transistors out to the front in pin tip jack so the supplies and transistors can easily be checked.

One of the main issues is loading the larger frames. The 5/6 bay frames have quite a substantial power supply both linear as well as switching. Packing that much dissipation in to the tm500 form factor is a challenge.

I have 1 of every TM500 Series frames, except a have 3 TM506 frames fully loaded. I have no TM5000 frames. I also have 1 of the extender cables. Having The Tektronix TM500 Series interface book helps in getting modules to "talk" to each other.

Ill look in to the interface book. It is a very cool system and defiantly enjoy what I have in the lab. just wish some of the plugins are not so cramped.

A foot is missing on my TM5006, so it would be great to 3D print replacements. Where do I find the file? Also, it would be great if you could do a file for the retainer clip on the rear panel, as these always get broken. It's on page 9-3 in the Service Manual. Part number 348-0544-05.

Mr Carlson, I think, would never use a piece of electrical/electronic equipment as a sacrifice! What's wrong with this picture?

There is a frame testing plugin that was made for this specific use however, they are quite rare and not many show up It is on the look for list for the lab as well as some others but none have come available as of yet. If this is in reference to testing the pass elements in the frame you could replace every component but this would quickly exceed the cost of the frame with each pass element being $30.00 each for the low power ones. I have not had to replace a TO-3 yet (high power port)

Jared over at, a channel which apparently shall not be named, has updated the design of the fixture you mention, the 067-1201-99, and has released complete gerbers, schematics and 3D mechanical drawings linked from his video titled "Build a Tektronix TM500 Mainframe Tester". His implementation is actually pretty slick.

What a silly comment. Every person that does restorations has parts units. Just because mR cArLsOn only restores things that generally don't need sacrificial units doesn't mean he doesn't have them. Plus if your really comparing what random yourubers do, you really need to huff some more simder smoke and get on with it!
