Yes, medical tape. Good for holding dressings on to the human body. Poor for hanging pictures in tanks.
News just in: It seems that the inconvenience of the location of the transport lock for the .50 call MG may be down to the MG mount's being moved so that they could do the bit where Mr Bradley Pitt fires the MG from his hatch, rather than from a standing position on the rear deck of the tank, which was more usual.
Also, several people in the comments have identified the sticky tape used to hold the pin-ups as modern medical tape.
I'm fairly sure the M4A2, 76 HVSS was just about used in WW2 at the end, just not on the western front, to my knowledge they were lend leased to the Russians and the Russians only used M4A2s as they standardized on Diesel engines. Interestingly the M4A2 uses basically the same engine as most Valentine tank variants, just two of them side by side.
According to this website: "The Soviet Union received 2073 M4A2 tanks with the 76mm M1A1 gun." but apparantly most of these were without the HVSS suspension just regular old VVSS, and here "The Russians received some HVSS M4A2 76 tanks before the war ended."

Also I've no idea where you got the idea the Sherman had no primary sights from, they're probably just missing from that restoration.
There is a mistake you mentioned in the video is that the Sherman you're riding on is fueled with Petrol, but in fact that's an A2, therefore it's fueled by Diesel, not Gasoline.
Commanders often added or moved machine guns. "Wardaddy" is supposedly based on Lt. (Later General) Creighton Abrams, and you should see the mods he made to his seven Shermans throughout the war, so there's nowt wrong with moving the MGs. I'm fairly sure Wardadday does shoot the .50 cal from the engine deck though.
@@siem3113 Main gun and co-ax had sights, bow gun didn't, you looked through the periscope and corrected your fall of shot by watching the tracer. It was intended for suppressive fire on the ground you were advancing over.

I've seen first aid kits with that tape in it too.
Yes, we use it, too, for that purpose. Less noticeable than other tapes . 3M Transpore tape.

"Fury" got me interested in tanks. I know it made a bunch of historical mistakes, and took creative liberties, but I still love it as a film, and idk for a film to spark an interest like that, had to have done something right.
Biggest thing I didn't like in that movie is how they overly demonize Germans and making Americans pure "angels".

3:44 Cello-tape. Yes, they had cello-tape in WWII. It was invented in 1930 by Richard Drew, an engineer employed by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (now known as 3M Company). It was and remains known by the tradename Scotch, ergo "scotch tape", a generic term for transparent tape in North America, regardless of manufacture. But of course, as noted in other comments, the tape they used there was modern medical tape, likely grabbed from the sound department where they use it to hold body mics in place.
I thought it was called scotch tape because it was expensive and was a bit mean .with the portions would vary to cut costs .hense scotch tape .but i stand to corrected .but I'm sure the scottish are generous.After all it was two scotch men fighting for a penny gave us copper wire and where would we be without that.

I always thought the M stood for "model", like the T often stands for "type".
It depends. In most things -- such as the M1911A1 pistol, the M designates Military versus sporting. A predecessor of the M1911, the 1902, came in M1902 and 1902 "Sporting" variants. The M1902 has MilSpec requirements such as a lanyard ring, squared butt, and a slide-latch.

M means model, and it's not the whole name. Every vehicle and piece of equipment had a designation that included precisely what it was and what model of that thing it was. For example: "Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16". Even the British have a similar system for vehicles and guns.

Well it's almost certainly footage he shot years ago, watch his "2 men 2 tanks" video or whatever it's called. He shows footage there that seems identical to this footage.
That and him saying that the audio was terrible suggests this video was on his back burner forever and isolation finally found him the time. But that's just a guess.

When I had my physical examination for conscript service, I first asked if it would be possible to become a tanker. But then they told me that I would have to wait for about two years to begin my service, so I volunteered for the mountain infantry because then I could join right away and be done with my service sooner. Then, after having completed my mandatory service, I decided to stay on and became an NCO.
And then one day, we were at this huge training facility where among other things we also trained how to conduct combined attacks with tank support, and later on the tankies offered me and a few fellow NCOs to join them for a ride in their M60s.
Well, what can I say? After that ride (and also sitting in one of them with proper hearing protection while they were firing at the shooting range), I was pretty glad that I had decided to become a lowly grunt instead of a tin driver. :-)

I am honestly glad I listened to this with headphones on. Even though it's not the normal gasoline engines, and that the engine has that revving issue, it's still magnificence to hear. tracers. Every 4th or 5th round would be a tracer so the gunner could walk his rounds on. The loaders machine gun on an abrams uses the same method as it lacks sights.
Thing is, there's two perspectives to this. The US gunner had the ability to react quickly to threats from more angles, by using his general vision periscope. This would be very handy against lurking Germans with Panzerfausts, likely at close range, who could come from many angles. The British hull MG positions had telescopic sights which made landing fire on enemies at long range very accurate from the first shot, but left awful peripheral vision and little chance to quickly engage someone close to the tank, because the MG required you to brace it up with your shoulder, eye to sight, to even begin to aim and fire.
If you mean the coax mg its linked in the ballistic computer and primary gunner sight on the M1, if you mean the loaders hatch mg on the roof, it has iron sights, it cant be fired remotely unlike the TCs RWS mg, its just a pintle mounted mg.

Edit: Naturally though he didn't pass up on the opportunity to complain about the designation of the 76mm gun. AFAIK they were called that to avoid confusion with the 3 inch gun mounted to the M10 Tank Destroyer.
Yes, avoiding the supply confusion was the reason. The "76mm" gun was actually 3.00 inches (76.2mm), having been derived from the earlier 3 inch gun, but it used incompatible rounds.
The earlier 75mm gun was derived from a French gun the U.S. started using in WW1, which is why it has a metric designation.

It's been said that the 2 stroke GM is the most efficient way to convert diesel into noise.
The 6046 is essentially two 6-71 engines mounted side by side. 12 cylinders total at 71 cubic inches per cylinder.
Very modular design dating back to the 30's, and still used today. The Australian Army still use the '6V53' I believe, which is a V6 configuration at 53 cubic inches per cylinder.
One of the nicknames for the GM 71 series engines is "Screaming Jimmy".

Gert Vanpeet a former Territorial Army artillery officer friend of mine tells me there is still plenty of 25 pounder ammunition around. They used to charge £5 to the public for a shot at Lark Hill on demonstration days.

No, it's almost a documentary. It was the German war doctrine that, upon spotting a tank, they should form up in columns and just run straight at it. Not using any cover earned some extra credit points.

You have a lot of the M4 nomenclature wrong. The movie Fury was supposed to be a M4A3 76 (W) HVSS, not an "older" version like you said. The A nomenclature referred to the engine used in the M4, not how old a version it was. The real Fury, M4A2 76(W) HVSS did get made during World War II and shipped to the USSR to be used.
Lindy gets tons of things wrong from WW2 and onward. He is great at ancient history but it's pretty cringy to see him muck up modern topics and repeat internet myths that have been debunked a long time ago. His blatant british bias also shows through (Bren vs "Spandau" video).
According tho the film makers themselves, it is playing a plain M4, and this they use to explain why it can;t hurt the front of a Tiger.
@@lindybeige The 76mm gun would penetrate a Tiger's 100mm of armor from the front. They are incorrect about the version of M4 the film is showing. The M4 had a radial engine and was pretty well phased out of the US Army in late Summer 1944. They only issued M4A3s after August 1944.

@@dainbramage3558 In the terms of the vast scope of ancient history through to today, yes most historians classify ww2 as part of part of modern history. 80 years ago isn't far off historically and the technology level is similar enough to be considered the first "modern war". Modern in history terms doesnt mean within the last 5 years. I suggest you actually study what is considered modern history.

Oh beautiful! I saw this tank with some reenactors in France in 2014. At the time I had no idea this thing would be in a movie, so of course when I heard the news it was quite the surprise. Pretty cool stuff indeed.

I remember when I was about 10 or 11 years old, my school class went to Allison Transmission (USA) on a field trip. They made the transmission for the Patton tank and had one in their show room. They actually let us kiddies climb INSIDE the monster! Even for a child, that thing was quite confining and tight. I can't imagine being inside some thing that if it gets hit, might just roast you alive.

That interior was empty, with some equipment stripped out. Imagine it fully loaded. Everything not needed for active combat was stored in external boxes because essential equipment filled the inside. There was over 10K rounds for the machine guns, smoke and signaling flares, and combat spares (everything from vision port glass to light bulbs).
I would like to see a museum tank with a full-up load, but it would likely be impossible to depict.

If the use “by dates “ and correct manuals for the Panzerfausts had been available the film would have ended differently, the era German military was very strict on such things.

i know Fury has wild inaccuracies, but it is my favorite war film. i am just blown away by the egg and horses scene. it feels just like the stories veterans told me about WWII and the Korean War.

I have seen this movie about 1.2 times, 1st time it was novel, real tanks, even a Tiger! Then it went downwards. The second time I was trying to see the more intricate plots inside. I put it down when the tank commander beat his new crewman and executed the german pow. I have always been learned a commander NEVER beats a subordinant. To my knowledge the Germans had it so forbidden that it was a court martial offence. You never trust a commander who has beaten You. And you depend on those people to do their job without putting you in danger without cause, and I will never trust a commander who beats his crew.

Well... when I was an NCO in the Austrian Army back in the 90ies, I did that just once (and despite the circumstances, it was wrong):
We were on the shooting range with our boys (which had about three weeks of conscript training behind them at that point) and I was standing as range officer beside a lad who suddenly had a stoppage. And instead of going through the proper procedures, he tried to turn to me for help while swinging his still loaded rifle around, too - _right in the direction of me and all the other men around._
I say "tried" because I instantly grabbed the barrel of his rifle and yanked it back in the general direction of the targets with one hand while purely out of reflex I gave him a hefty slap on the back of his head with my other hand and reminded him (in slightly colorful language, I must admit) to observe range safety. Realizing his error, he was mortified and complied at once.
I then apologized to him, told him that I would be completely fine with him filing a complaint with the CO for me slapping him, and that there would be no hard feelings from my side because I had definitely been out of line, but he just answered: "That's okay, sergeant, I guess I did earn it somehow" before adding with a slight grin: "And as my head is still where it should be: no harm, no foul."
(I'd also like to add that we still got along well for the rest of his service, and he also became a proper soldier.)
But I _do_ fully agree with you on the point that beating a subordinate is a definite no-no which does require to be sanctioned adequately. And while I was "only" acting out of reflex, I _do_ admit that what I did was wrong, and I _did_ see to it that this remained a one-time misstep.
So much fun to see you crawl around inside a tank that's still alive.

My dad was a loader in an M-10 during the final days of the defeat of Germany. He was in the 29th infantry division 821 tank destroyer battalion. First gun company B. Had a King Tiger shoot their M-10 at point blank range through and through. Front to back. Picked up the projectile after it came to rest after passing through a 2 foot thick brick wall.
The tape on the photo is called Transpore bandage tape. It is porous as well as rough. Most likely from the first aid supplies on set. I used it many times as a medic in the fire service. John Carlson

Actually that is an M4A3E8 and it did existed in WW2! HVSS was reffering to the suspension and a total of 11,424 vehicles with the improved HVSS suspension were produced by Fisher Tank Arsenal and Detroit Tank Arsenal from June 1942 through March 1945.

I never watched the movie. I never had an interest in any kind of war films until I found your channel. And that was only the high medieval stuff that I had a passing interest in. You are most definitely very interesting. Because of your videos, I recently purchased A Bridge Too Far and I’m waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I also like that you took your family with you. That was pretty cool of you. You did look like you were having fun aside from the editing aspect and racking your skull several times. Even though it’s a nightmare to edit, it’s still a cool life experience to have!
