I've worked from home since 2012. I am very lucky because I have an awesome group I work with and an awesome boss. I just recently took early semi-retirement and work 3 days a week.
I was hoping you'd cover this topic. Agree, there are many pros to working from home. There are many cons, especially if you live in a retirement community when most of the activities happen during the day, during the week. It makes it challenging to meet new friends.
Hello Chief. Great video. My daughter works from home and loves it but the down side is she doesn't meet anyone in person. Everything is by phone, email or text. But she loves getting up in the morning, walks across the hall to her office and doesn't have a commute. And the restaurant (the kitchen) is always open.
I retired at 55 and began reselling online from home. It is nice not having to hear all the office noise. But it does get too quiet sometimes. Btw..i love the desk!
I’ve worked from home for the last 3 years and I love it. Much more healthy, I have a treadmill in my office and any meetings or training I just have to listen to or watch a video for I jump up and walk. Although living in a a split foyer house, that hairpin curve on my “commute “ is wicked when your coffee cup is too full!
Spent many years on the road in sales, after Covid became a realtor now I leave when I want to! Don’t miss driving all day! I have to stay active though, could never do a desk job!
Just seeing your UA-cam channel. You’re videos are very informative. Love the F-4 Phantom t-shirt! Takes me back to my days in the Air Force in California. I miss hearing that airplane takeoff! Lots of luck to you and your channel.😊
Great video! I work from home since Covid and love it. One thing I like is not having to prepare my lunch the night before or in the morning. And being able to dress casually is easier to get in a quick workout during the day. I'm not ready to retire yet but would love to move down to The Villages. I was curious if I would still be able to meet people evenings/weekends. A drink at the square sounds fun after work!
You’re right about everything you said! All good points I missed, I love having the kitchen next to my office! Yeah I do go and grab a drink sometimes but haven’t really met any folks yet, except for a few, but again it’s my own doing. I need to get out more!
Great points made here about working from home! I work from home too and I am able to do a lot of exercising and walking my dog, it's great! The stand up desk is great. I had one when I worked in the office. Now I think I will get one for home!👊😎
As a writer, I've enjoyed working from home for over 20 years. It's the best thing ever. The good news is: We are not bound to punching a time-clock with traditional office hours. The downside is: Sometimes, I can't put my work down. So my hours can end up being longer. It's not unusual for me to edit a chapter at 2 AM on a holiday--but at least I'm wearing comfy pajamas. 😆
@@TheVillagesChief Yep. Some people tell me they get distracted by TV, a call from a friend, or doing laundry. I have the opposite problem. I have to discipline myself to understand when it's my time off. That book chapter can wait until tomorrow. It's a balance. But we are blessed to have the choice. .
As a nurse, I stopped working in a hospital and began working in case management for Anthem and Health Net before remote working became a trend during Covid. Back then, in my field, remote employment was reserved for mainly licensed professionals; RN’s, MD’s and such. It was strictly monitored and I must admit that I worked more hours at home than I even worked in the hospital. When I was transferring patients from all over the world, repatriation and admissions or discharge was required at all hours. The management also had a way of getting nurses to do more work by veiled threats of moving us into a physical office if we didn’t meet deadlines. That was a sure fire way to keep a nurse working extra hard. Nurses aren’t the type of employees to be tethered to a stifling cubicle. That said, working at home requires a lot of self- discipline and ability to manage time well. The perks are flexibility and the freedom from being micromanaged.
I have worked from home for many years as well and you hit the pros and cons spot on. While I don't miss the commute back and forth to the office, I do miss those that I work with even though I'm in meetings with them every day. I'm very disciplined with my work ethics but unfortunately I work way too many hours. And unfortunately my employer expects me to be available at all times so it makes it hard to separate home and work life. I did have a front door sign made that says "Refrain from knocking or ringing doorbell as I work from home". Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Husband works for himself at home good tips about letting neighbors know your hours. We have two dogs that bark when someone approaches or knocks on the front door. Also good to know you have had good video conferencing online. Thanks for the info. Have a good Sunday!
I work from home but only 2 days a week so that prevents me from moving to a community like The Villages, unfortunately. I hope to visit The Villages after I retire in a year or two to see how it is...can't wait! I work at an army installation by the way.
Thanks Chief and we appreciate you sharing. I have seen several other UA-camrs who work from home while now living in The Villages and when we were on our Lifestyle Visit we met a couple who now live there and work from home. It would be interesting to hear a video where you interview others who also work at home from The Villages. Just a thought; thanks again and have a great weekend.
The biggest benefit for me when I started working from home was no more five o’clock happy hour at the bar downstairs. Working in those big downtown office buildings was killing me. Was fun, too much fun.
I went thru that as well when I was living in Maryland, after work cocktails was a daily thing that was way too much fun! I know exactly what ya mean 😂
Cool office. I had a desk job for many years and I found myself having to get up and walk around a bit a few times a day walk to the water cooler or whatever, just to walk a bit. Nice set up you’ve got there Chief. 😊. Go Navy!!
Dude I'm so glad I found your channel. You're really hitting on a lot of the Topics I'm interested in. Me and my wife have been considering moving down to the Villages. My wife's parents live there so we've visited several times. But I have lots of considerations about it. I'm in my late 50s and I would probably still want to work for a while from home. And I really don't like the old person vibe there. I feel I act much more youthful. I don't like golf. I'm much more into fitness and natural health. And more physical activities like bike riding and stuff. I'm really not interested in slowing down and riding around in golf carts and sitting around playing cards and so forth. It seems like most people embrace being old and slowing down there. I'm more interested in speeding upand being more active than I am even now if I was to move there. So, I'm just wondering how much I'd fit in and how much I'd enjoy it. I do really love the town squares and the live music every night. That's awesome! I play drums too. We would really like to move there, especially to be closer to my in-laws. But I'm really worried that I'm not going to be down with that whole old person vibe everywhere, where everyone just sits around riding golf carts and goes to the doctors all the time and plays cards , and drinks, and lets themselves be all out of shape and everything. I don't drink either. I don't know... so these are all things I'm kind of struggling with. I do really like almost everything else about it though.
Definitely checkout the southern area of the villages, Middleton is for young families no age restrictions so that whole area down there and near Eastport is gonna have a different vibe in the next year or two I have a feeling. Plus below 44 are all the new areas with younger seniors like you, I think you’ll see it’s pretty active. Next time your in the villages focus on the south end it may be what your looking for. Thanks for watching!
Hi, recently found you and considering moving to the Villages and I am still working as well. I, too have a standup desk. I alternate between sitting and standing. Thanks for the content.
I heard once that sitting all day was the new “smoking” as it basically had similar adverse cardiovascular effects on the body. It also had deleterious effects on the spine. Standing desks are a great ergonomic option.
Work life balance😊 I also work from home. It may sound odd but when I am done with work I close my office door. Im too tempted to work into the evening if I dont.
For the past 8 years my schedule gives me 5 days off (in a row) every 3 weeks... basically... a vacation every 3 weeks....One thing I've noticed is that I don't eat as much when I'm home... it's easier to "fast" ... Having to interact with people physically takes more energy, therefore, I eat more at work.
I’m an artist who works from home. I can relate to wanting to do things at 3 a.m. For me that is when inspiration hits or when I figure out how to overcome a problem I am trying to figure out. That’s a pro for me. The con is that my cottage is always a mess with the things I am working on.
Smiled & so related to when u mentioned having to restrain yourself frm e-mailing or other business related off hrs activities. I'm long retired now but for the last several yrs of employment I was Fortunate enough to wk frm home. As a result I became a night owl & some nights it was very difficult not get on my computer I shoot out material for the next day😊. As usual very enjoyable video. Take Care man or now that I kno ur name, Jeff
My employer just changed the hybrid work policy again. Now we are in the office on Mondays and Wednesdays. The other 3 days we can work from home or work in the office. Working from home...big pro is saving on gas & wear & tear on my 10 year old car. Downside to working from home 100%...I don't think you get to know your coworkers as well. But during Chicago winters I appreciate the opportunity to work from home now 3 days a week. Hopefully this policy will stay the same until I plan to retire in hopefully 18 months from now. Good video Jeff! Glad Gridley is a team player!
@@TheVillagesChief I remember you said you were stationed at now closed Glenview Naval Air Station which I pass by on my way home from the office. My days of driving through snowstorms are over. I will work from home those days...maybe the winter of 2023-2024 will be my last full winter in the Chicago area.
I did enjoy it there at the time for sure, but some days it was freezing cold working on the jets on the flight line when the snow blowing sideways from the wind at a million below zero! These old bones would crack now!
Hey Chief, thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You motivated me to invest in a stand up desk! Where are you from originally? I'm from Kansas originally, now I'm living in my 7th state, Louisiana of all places! Any who...if you are interested in sharing travel tips for Florida (outside of the villages) in general, that would be cool. Also if you have experience traveling the "redneck riviera" please share! If ya know, ya know Take care and as always, thank you for your service ~ Dusty
Hi Dusty thanks so much, and I hope you like the desk! I felt better real soon after using it. I'm originally from Cleveland Ohio, but after joining the Navy I lived all over: NJ, IL, WI, CA, PA, MD, VA, and now FL :) Yes I plan on hitting the road and exploring Florida soon!
Love working from, I have been given the opportunity to work from home three days a week. Will definitely try the stand and work. I sometimes get so caught up in working, I am stiff when I do stand up. So the two days in the office are long days with a drive from Leesburg into Orlando. But since moving to Leesburg a few months ago I have gotten use to the commute. But would still like to be fully remote. I too am more productive at home, lol chatty Cathy in the office. My neighborhood is pretty much shut down by 5pm. And since I am a new resident meeting fellow 55+’s has been hard. But I always have the pool as a gathering spot on the weekends. Thanks for sharing. 😊
My concern with standing all day is compression of the spine and the deleterious effects that could have over time. I sit in a fancy Herman Miller Aeron Chair leaned back so the weight of my torso is distributed evenly. I also make it a habit of getting up and walking around every hour or two.
Did it take you a while to get used to the standing desk? I have been sitting for 20 years and starting to get shoulder/arm pain, etc. Not sure if it's age/sitting...little bit of both!!! I've never thought about a standing desk...but intrigued by you talking about it and liking it so much!
I instantly liked it and felt better. Remember too it does lower to regular desk level too so if it takes a bit of getting used to you can go back and forth. Thanks for watching Mel!
with the price of gas no commute. with the speed of internet no problem. also the applications that support mobile working a lot better. used to telecommute I worked in the IT field. I also did a lot of travel for my company with my federal projects. good info chief the co workers that complain about other workers working from home in my experience are the least productive workers. one downside you work more hours from home
Hi Jeff 👋 I also work from home in The Villages. Question... Do you use the wall behind you as a backstop and lean against it to shift your weight around and give your legs / ankles / feet a break ?
No not really, I'll have to think about that, maybe I am unconsciously. I do put one foot up at a time on that little barrel I have under the desk tho now that I think about it. Thanks for watching WeAreAll Americans!
I use Comcast Xfinity and pay $70 a month, it’s been working flawlessly for me, super fast and I upload and download large files constantly for work and videoconference daily. I can’t remember the exact speed but it’s fast, no problem. I think it might have been down briefly maybe twice since I’ve lived here during bad storms but that’s it. Plus I use my Apple TV and UA-cam thru the same connection, never a problem steaming. Real happy with it.
I’m not sure, good question. It’s my own fault there are things I could do more to meet folks, I’m thinking of starting a Jeep club, riding with fellow motorcyclists and joining a band. I just gotta get to it! Haha I love our Coasties! We all get along great, all the branches have fun banter between each other but in the end we would lay it on the line for each other. But it’s a funny, valid question! Thanks for watching Kathy!
Hey Chief. I have been considering relocating from Nevada to the Villages early next year. I just read a couple of articles of several large multi level apartment building completed or under construction around or within sight of the residence in or near the different villages. Do you foresee a change in the character of the residents who live their now. How significantly do you think the Villages will be impacted and will younger adults and teens/children take over the existing venues that seniors have come to enjoy and depend upon. Have you observed any issues to date?
I do think way down south you will see much younger folks due to Middleton being built. I don’t see or haven’t seen anything change as far as the vibe or character of the residents, from top to bottom all my experiences with people have been super friendly, no negativity or bad vibe anywhere in TV. Honestly apartments make sense for snow birds or people unable to take care of the yards, I don’t see a problem with apartments, but too soon to tell. Considering the size of this town I think TV has a great vibe that isn’t going anywhere soon. Just an uneducated guess!
The outside noise is very low, it’s quiet here all day with exception of lawn mowing or a truck once in awhile, but no real outside noise problem at all. Inside it’s hard to tell because I’m by myself, if the dishwasher or laundry is running it hasn’t been noticeable when I’m in the office. So basically it’s a very quiet house. Thanks Donna :)

Another perk working from home, your auto insurance rates may decrease . .You're driving less daily. Your policy might give reductions on mileage based driving..🤑
When do you plan to fully retire ? Could you scale back and only work part time from home ? Sounds like you are doing contracting work for the Fed Govt. I am in my late 50's working those 4 , 10 hr days .. so with lunch and a commute , its like a 12 hr day ....I'm having been doing for a while but this year I have become so tired when I get home ...I can't anything after work....must be age.
We only take 30 min for lunch and believe it or not I do think the diff between 9 and 10 hrs is a lot, I totally see what you mean they are long days. I can’t complain because the work from home thing makes it so much easier. I’m not sure when I’ll retire, if my health hangs in there maybe 67 because I love my work, if I feel burnt out sooner maybe 62. I do plan on working part time on my side hobby of t-shirts, which I plan on doing a video on for those that want some extra $$. Hang in there Jimmy, thanks for sharing!
@@TheVillagesChief yeah , we are suppose to get 30 min for lunch but most people just eat at their desks.. as we are on production and have to close so many cases per week ..and it takes me all 40 hrs to make my metrics. The cases are audited and the rules constantly change. Man I need a job for a slower older man. (don't have the time to socialize so would rather just work from home.)
Great content - I’m an extrovert and I also require structure. I’m not disciplined to just shut it down after hours when working from home. I also have a dog who loves to be on zoom calls and needs his own space during the day, so he says! So, l get of the house and go to work! 🤣. Love the T-Shirts. Need me some Gridley, where is he??? 🐶 ❤

hard. But I always have the pool as a gathering spot on the weekends. Thanks for sharing. 😊
We need to start a work from club 😂
👍🏼for sure.
And a sponsor program for being a newby into the neighborhood, like when you pcs. So you don’t feel completely alone. Lol
@@Fldaisy excellent idea!
My concern with standing all day is compression of the spine and the deleterious effects that could have over time. I sit in a fancy Herman Miller Aeron Chair leaned back so the weight of my torso is distributed evenly. I also make it a habit of getting up and walking around every hour or two.
Thanks for sharing SoCalFreelance!
I enjoyed working from home due to COVID-19, but very much missed the socialness of the office environment.
Thanks for sharing David!
with the price of gas no commute. with the speed of internet no problem. also the applications that support mobile working a lot better. used to telecommute I worked in the IT field. I also did a lot of travel for my company with my federal projects. good info chief
the co workers that complain about other workers working from home in my experience are the least productive workers. one downside you work more hours from home
Yup all good points, thanks for watching Ariel!
Hi Jeff 👋
I also work from home in The Villages.
What’s the broadband strength like in the villages? Thank you for your programmes I always enjoy them so much.
@@TheVillagesChief Thank you very much for such a comprehensive reply.
Does the Villages have a Coast Guard Auxiliary? It might provide that human contact. Unless the Navy and CG are competitors!
There is a topic I am wondering about, dating in the villages.
Once I figure that out I’ll put together a video! Great suggestion. Thanks so much for watching Salt life!
Jeff - hiw is the sound proofing from outside noise or noise coming from front door or kitchen/ living room?
The outside noise is very low, it’s quiet here all day with exception of lawn mowing or a truck once in awhile, but no real outside noise problem at all. Inside it’s hard to tell because I’m by myself, if the dishwasher or laundry is running it hasn’t been noticeable when I’m in the office. So basically it’s a very quiet house. Thanks Donna :)
How is the Internet connection in the villages? Is it broadband? Do your zoom calls have any kind of a lag?
Hi Liz, I use Comcast Xfinity and pay $70 a month, it’s been working flawlessly for me, super fast and I upload and download large files constantly for work and videoconference daily. I can’t remember the exact speed but it’s fast, no problem. I think it might have been down briefly maybe twice since I’ve lived here during bad storms but that’s it. Another perk working from home, your auto insurance rates may decrease . .You're driving less daily. Your policy might give reductions on mileage based driving..🤑
Yup I think you’re right Debra
What was your rate
PR, I’m a retired PRC(AW)
Currently working from home, for me the following are my cons.......
Haha! Well said Scott!
Thanks!
Land GirlGB! You’re way too sweet!
I gotta make a Gridley tshirt, he’s got some serious fans!
