Hi Macenna. I worked in the paint department at home depot for 11 years and I was very fortunate to work with 2 retired painters that taught me SO MUCH! Anyways one of the things they taught me is if you're trying to match an existing stain and getting close but not quite there, try some of the amber shellac on top. It gives it the depth of the aged stain and finish and will often get you exactly there. Anyways, hope this helps!

Am I the only one that kept replaying when she tapped the tops of all the cans? 😂 those tones and rhythm were so satisfying!
Also would recommend mixing stains if you find ones that are close but not quite it. I had to match my wood floors and found one that was the right saturation of brown but too cool toned. I applied a base layer of the brown, let it dry, and then reapplied a red stain on top of it and it warmed it up to match!

Keep in mind your finish is going to alter the color a lot, so might be worth putting some poly on top just to see. The old stuff was likely finished with oil, so you might get closer if you stick to oil based for stain and finish. Also, you can mix stains to find the perfect color. Just takes trial and error.

Hi Macenna - would it soften the look of the closet door frosted glass if you rounded out the corners of the clear area surrounding the floral stencil - I think it would look really lovely if you could make it more oval...It would also accomplish having less clear area through which you are able to see the closet contents.

For the glass in the door, I would find someone with a cricut or similar to make you a negative stencil that you can stick to the glass, then spray frosting around. That way the design is clear and the rest of the door is frosted. It'll look more like the original too.

From a color specialist hair stylist lol, when going from light to dark we need to put the underlying pigment into blonde hair before our final color. So I’d try staining with one coat of a *light* orange then go in with something that is the level of darkness you’re looking for that is that warm orange/cherry/brown but mostly brown? Might work not sure hehe also don’t be afraid of putting orangy on top of something purply. Something slightly purple might help cancel out the yellow in the new wood? Not sure, but hope this helps!

Hi MaCenna, you need to really mix the stain (not just a couple of stirs) all the pigment has settled to the bottom of the cans. What you are getting dipping a rag into the top is very water-down color. The pigment will make the color much richer. You may also need to do several layers of stain ( I recommend at least two) to achieve the deep rich color of the older finish. Hope this helps!

For the stain, I left this comment on a recent video:
I could be wrong, but I believe that in order to get a good color match, you might need to use shellac. I’ve been watching Kaleb (on “The 2nd Empire Strikes Back” UA-cam channel) restore an 1890’s home that also has bead board, plinths, rosettes, etc… He shows his whole process of stripping and shellacking the wood, so his channel might be worth a watch. :)

The formula for your stain is: 2 as a base + 10% 3 to deepen and give nuance, + 15% to 20% 6 to add the warmth and the glow. Trust me on this, I mix colours every day. Remember to adjust as you like. Work with tablespoon measurements and mix. Keep a meticulous record and when you get the mix you want, mix all the stain you need at the same time in buckets and store in the tins again.l You will never be able to re mix the stain so you have to do it all at once.

In my opinion to match the age you need to varnish over the gunstock stain. Not poly. Varnish adds an amber aged glow

  • @katiekildahl1666
    @katiekildahl1666 2 роки тому +93

Good luck on your stain hunt! I’ve had to do a similar thing before and might I recommend layering? Use a brush to paint on a base stain with the right orange/red tone (like the one you both loved), let it sit, then wipe and dry. Then use a more neutral brown tone as the second layer and repeat the process. Layering makes is easier to repeat across your projects and since the first tone penetrates the most, the second tone adds the dimension without settling too intensely. Can’t wait to watch more videos! Thank you for sharing your home :)

Try testing the stains with the finish coat (ie: verathane wood finish) because that protective top coat will "add" some pop to the stain colours and be a truer final colour and hopefully match! I liked the gunstock! I love watching you so much I am forgetting to deal with my own home renos!

So this might not work, but since sealers over the years tend to yellow have you thought about trying a yellow-ish polyurethane on top of the stain? I know usually it’s better to buy clear sealer, but maybe if you do it on purpose you can fake the “old” stain look. It might be interesting to test out! Good luck with this project, matching old woods is always an adventure!

My Dad has restored parts of my families old farmhouse; he had the same issue with matching stains. It's very challenging to match a color compared to a natural process that happens over time. Having some oil-based top coat or shellac may give you the best results for the aged look your wanting.
Shellac is especially attractive on walnut, mahogany, and fine veneer woods. It polishes well, plus is the basis for the traditional French polish finish on very fine furniture.

LOVE the fluted glass idea… i commented that on the last video, i love that you had the same thought lol! i feel like it would give a more high end finish rather than the spray and you could easily add in some matching decor pieces, i know you have plenty! and if frosted is still ideal, maybe try some frosted vinyl with a cutout.

The premium fast dry stains you need to coat and then wait to wipe off the excess after 2-3 min. The standard you can wipe on with a rag (without leaving excess to soak in). This is from someone who just spent a month testing stain to match existing 100 yr old baseboard 😁 Early American ended up being the best match for me, and I think it’s pretty close to your trim.

I would suggest looking into stain matching that you can get done at Sherwin Williams or Norbergs if you have those in your area. I'm not sure what other stores offer stain matching but those are the ones I'm pretty sure about. They have stain products that come in tint bases so that they can actually have different colorant added or adjusted until it matches yours. I know Sherwin Williams does not require an additional charge for matching but I do not know if Norbergs does. Something to possibly look into that could save time and money in the future
Edit: I see a lot of comments about second coating. I'm not an expert but matbe double check the product you have because some recommend against second coating as it will not penitrate and can cause a tacky or imperfect texture.

He’s saying that you need to take the old molding with the stain your trying to match with a fresh piece of wood (needs to be large of the same material) into Sherwin Williams. They will stain match for you. They’ve done this for my husband many many times and it was on point. ❤️ LOVE your entryway btw!!

Just like the rest are saying. Try amber Shellac over the gunstock and see if it gives you close to what you want.
Another trick that has helped me with an antique finish in the past has been the steel wool and vinegar trick (soak steel wool in vinegar overnight and then use the vinegar as a wash over the bare pine). That creates a reaction with the wood and results in close to the rosette color that you’re looking for. It will still result in heavy reverse graining, but it does look more weathered/antique. Works best on oak, but will orange up pine quite a bit. Then seal that with a clear coat or amber shellac when done.
Last trick, if you need to “add grime” to make the finish look more like 100 year old finish, see if your mother has glazing medium and brown oil paint that you can borrow and combine for a wash over the top if you need to deepen the color. Wipe on over the top of the dried shellac coat(s) and wipe off. Then another deal coat of something crystal clear (water based poly, clear shellac, or polyacrylic) that matches the sheen of the original trim.

I recently learned of an Edwardian method that helps with the aged shine. You use a mixture of Linseed oil, Gin and black treacle to rub on the wood OR warm beer. Both options clean and replenish the finished wood. I've never tried it but I saw it in a youtube video about Edwardian living (from Absolute History) and thought of your project.

An idea for the glass. Could you put the stencil down and paint over it with that stuff that you can put on windows that protects it when you're painting the window frames. Then you could take the stencil off, frost the entire glass, let it dry, and then remove the protective coating you put on. That would frost most of the glass and the stencil would then be the see-through part.

So, really great comments already, my add-on is I've found really great success layering stains to get depth. Gives a different effect than mixing, and you can leave each colour on for a different time... My thought would be to try the gunstock at full strength and then wipe on one of the darker options and wipe off again right away... I was thinking mahogany but you have a mix of water and oil stains and I can't remember which is which. 😊
Still mad-love that hall... And yes, your mom is a brilliant artist. It's awesome to see someone just create because they love creating and putting it out into the world.

You know, I bet you could use a peel away Latex paint to paint in the stencil, then frost on top of it, peel it away and have a clear design leftover. You might like that more than the other with the big, clear, square.

I would recommend general finishes gel stain in candlelite! I’ve used it on different types of wood and it has a amber/brown look. And the best thing about gel stain is less splotching on woods like pine!

I love the frosted glass in the entryway but I gotta say... reeded glass 👀 GORGEOUS. Maybe even a green tinted reeded glass (or whatever color)

Thanks for sharing your amazing journey 💖. Also, frost spray paint should be applied a bit heavier and not so lightly or in short sprays. I made that mistake with my first window. It came out patchy and felt grainy. My second window, I read that you should keep longer sprays and be closer to the glass so that it leaves a wet look the first time around. That second window came out so much better that you wouldn’t know it was spray painted frost 🤍

Love seeing how adorable it is to see Kinsley follow you around . She always puts a smile on my face. MaCenna I have to say that I've watched your entryway video 4 + times and seeing how the wall color and you're moms beautiful oil painting made that space into that moody style you wanted. You have inspired me to find a renter-friendly way to transform my awkward living room in my little house! I have been a grey, black, with a peachy pink pop of color type of person way to long. I have researching to do. Thank you so much MaCenna. Can't wait for tne next space

I’m sure someone has said this too, but you need multiple coats to really see the color! I’ve stained picture frames before and the first coat looked so bad, the second really brought out the color. The vibrancy happened after the second coat, and the true color emerged!

Macenna have you thought about wearing an ice vest when you work outside in the heat? They're really effective! X

Might have to add a small amount of darker stain to the one you chose (also the one I would have gone with!). And your finish is going to deepen the color, so test different stain mixes with whatever topcoat/sealer you’re going to use on it. And for that I would recommend something that is oil-based or traditionally known to amber so you get that amber color that is prevalent in the old wood and going to give that depth and richness.

Someone may have suggested this or you said it, but you can mix your stains! Take a little bit of the color you like and add some of that darker color and the orange. See if that brings it to the right color… 🙏🏼

Can’t you take it to Home Depot or the other one and have them scan that piece for you? People take stuffed animals, dinnerware, etc to get a color match.
I love what you’ve done to the entryway. It’s giving off LIFE in your beautiful home. I always look forward to your videos. And your mom is so talented and beautiful and I love to watch you guys interact. Lol!

Your entry hall color is beautiful 😍. Green is my favorite color. I made my husband run into the bedroom to see the color. Love seeing the road to the end. Keep up the sharing and cannot wait to see Christmas time. 👍😊🌺

I'm so glad you mentioned taking care with oil-based stain on rags. In my town, there've been several fires this summer due to people just tossing bunched rags into the trash.
Lay stained rags flat to reduce heat building that leads to fire.
