Thoughts on the Exhibition Title: By Somluk Pantiboon
The title for the exhibition “Old but New, New but Old” came to me
when I went to Bangkok to find an exhibition site and I saw this
100-year old Chinese building. Throughout my life, I have loved old
things and old architecture is one of my favorites, so when I got
inside the Lhong gallery, I instantly loved it and was inspired by the
beauty of its oldness. The rustic, aged-old walls did not look like
run-down walls to my eyes but looked like modern new-aged walls. These old-new walls reminded me of my old-new idea that everything in life or in the world is never static but constantly moving like clouds, changing one form to another, then another new form appearing in the circle of life, like a symbolic circle of Zen. Standing in the old-new building, I felt that my abstract paintings and newly inspired forms of ceramics can coexist perfectly within the 100-year old Lhong gallery. Another idea about New but Old is from my life experience. Twenty
years ago, I planted many baby trees in and around my new house. My passion was to make a forest, at least on my ground. Now those Babies have become big and tall like mature men, covering the house with thick green and yielding countless seeds, spreading
them far on the wings of the wind. Someday, the mother tree may
fall to the ground but the new trees will continue to grow strong. I
see in those seeds, not new gets old and dies, but instead I see the
wonder of the circling nature of life

นิทรรศการ Old but New, New but Old ผลงานใหม่ล่าสุดที่ไม่เคยแสดงที่ไหนโดย ‘อาจารย์สมลักษณ์ ปันติบุญ’ จัดขึ้นที่ Lhong 1919 โดยอาจารย์ได้เดินทางมายังสถานที่จัดงาน แล้วเกิดแรงบันดาลใจที่จะสร้างผลงานใหม่ทั้งหมดแต่กลมกลืนไปกับผืนกำแพงเก่าของสถานที่ บอกเล่าเรื่องราวระหว่างสิ่งเก่ากับสิ่งใหม่ที่ปะทะและอยู่ร่วมกันได้ ผ่านผลงานจิตรกรรมนามธรรมที่สร้างจากผงดินสี ผงหินบด ขี้เถ้า เปลือกหอย จากธรรมชาติร่วมกับสีอะคริลิกสมัยใหม่ สิ่งเก่าก็ปรับตัว สิ่งใหม่ก็เคารพคุณค่าในอดีต หลายชิ้นเราจึงเห็นการอยู่ร่วมกันทับซ้อนบนเส้นแบ่งกลายเป็นงานศิลปะที่งดงามชวนคิด อาจารย์ยังบอกเราอีกด้วยว่า สาเหตุที่ทำงานเป็นแนวนามธรรมก็เพราะสิ่งนี้เป็นศิลปะดั้งเดิมตั้งแต่มนุษย์เริ่มเขียนในผนังถ้ำ แต่หลายคนกลับเข้าใจว่างานนามธรรมที่แฝงปรัชญา เป็นความงามร่วมสมัยที่เกิดขึ้นหลังยุคโรแมนติก ความยอกย้อนเช่นนี้ ชวนให้เราฉุกคิดเช่นกันว่า ที่เราคิดว่าดี ว่าใหม่ บางทีก็อาจไม่ใช่เสมอไป สำหรับผลงานอีกส่วนที่นำมาแสดง จะเป็นงานเซรามิกที่อาจารย์ทำงานกับภายในตัวเองเพื่อฝึกความกล้าหาญ การทำลายความคิดหรือสิ่งที่เรารู้ เราเชื่อ เพื่อเปิดรับความงามใหม่ เราจึงได้เห็นผลงานเซรามิกผิดรูป ถูกประกอบสร้างอย่างที่เราไม่คุ้นเคยของอาจารย์เป็นครั้งแรก ซึ่งงานนี้มีศิลปินและภัณฑารักษ์คนเก่งอย่าง 'อังกฤษ อัจฉริยโสภณ' มาเป็นผู้ดูและจัดการนิทรรศการ
สำหรับใครที่สนใจอยากเข้าชม งานนี้เปิดให้ชมฟรีแล้วตั้งแต่วันนี้ถึง 24 ตุลาคม 2564 เฉพาะวันพุธ-วันอาทิตย์ 11.00 - 18.00 น.
