Interesting question. If a soldier sacrifices his life by throwing himself on a grenade to save his friends not heroic, even if the leader of his country is a bad person? Suppose he dies trying to save a wounded man from the other side (the good guys)? Those things have happened.
Its sad but look at history as a whole. Even today we are slaves to corruption, class wars and a right to free education. I understand your hatred of plantation owners and all the sad stories but they lead right back to Africa where people on the coast would trade (weaker) people . Every continent has or is enslaving its own and others. If you stop at first instant that makes you uncomfortable you will never really learn.
Two things can be true at once. You can show heroism from the losing side. What if a confederate soldier stopped other soldiers from raping or murdering children? Don’t be so emotional. There are millions of good people involved in bad situations
Funny. When I heard that open-mindedness, I was encouraged to listen. Remember, things are not always so black and white, (pun not intended) and history is always written by the victor.
There were many issues that divided the north and the south and slavery was a big one. Everyone knew slavery had to end, but it was more about how and when. Most people had a stronger attachment to their state than the federal government. What were southern officers in the US Army to do, if they stayed in the army they would have been invading their own homes. Serving in the army was and still is in the south and many went to West Point from the antebellum south.
I like David Wales reading and have listened to his work many times, mostly sci fi. Happy 2024.
I’ve also listened to many of his books. I think of him as a kind of distant family friend. We really appreciate all the LibriVox volunteers.
@shellysangrey I thought you might enjoy. Thanx LibriVox and Happy New Year Everyone.
To you as well 😊 wishing health and prosperity to all in 2024
is this AI voice ? This is a very productive voice
Lead horse as in the front. Not lead like tin, copper, brass.... thumb down. How can you let this mistake go?
Hahaha context clues, hell of a concept
There’s really some terrible mistakes on the narration of the pre-WW1 books. I mean, really head-scratching mistakes.
👍👍
Second
There was not heroism on both sides. As soon as they said that I bailed. One side fought for slavery and was evil. Heroes are not evil.
