- Imani Washington, a gifted singer from Atlanta, Georgia, was deeply immersed in gospel and soul from a young age. Raised in a close-knit church community, her remarkable voice and emotional depth set her apart early on, making her a local sensation by her teens.
At 14, during a summer music program in Kansas City, Imani met Jordan, a future member of Jodessa. Their shared love for music and faith forged a bond that would shape Imani’s future. By 1994, at 18, Jordan introduced Imani to Sacred Soul Sessions, a label renowned for blending gospel and soul.
Signed in late 1994, Imani began working on her debut single under the mentorship of King Quartet. "The Shepherds' Call," released in summer 1995, showcased her powerful voice and emotional range, climbing the gospel charts and earning critical acclaim. The success established Imani as a rising star in the Sacred Soul Sessions era.
Her second single, "Breaking Down the Silence," was released at the top of 1996. That same year, Imani joined the Hope Restored holiday tour, featuring top Sacred Soul Sessions artists. The tour became the highest-grossing holiday tour of all time, with Imani’s performances being among the most memorable.
Imani’s career growth was marked by her commitment to faith and community. She participated in the Breaking Chains Forever festival, raising funds for domestic violence shelters and schools in Senegal and Kenya. Her music and story are a testament to the enduring power of gospel and soul, reflecting resilience, faith, and transformation.
