  • A nice little test run. Things are looking good. Looks like I need to replace some fuel filters and perform some mild carb tuning. Overall a fun day on the R5 cafe racer!!

    Thanks for the Ride!
    I rebuilt a 71 R5 with drum brakes back in 1979.
Sent the cylinders out to a two stroke racing Kart builder and he set them up with the size pistons and opened the ports. Sent my crank out to a motorcycle drag race shop and they checked the rod bearings and tack welded the press fit assembly.
Before the rebuild it was a little shaky above 75mph.
After the rebuild and some miles on the motor I took it out one night and hit 105mph nice and smooth. 105 is the factory rated top speed as well.
Meanwhile that was the fastest I had ridden and I discovered a small problem: The throttle was stuck? - wait- the wind on my upper body placed my arms in tension so my throttle hand was being pulled wide open and I figured out pretty fast that a new effort was needed: physically push the throttle forward- it didn’t retract by itself at 105mph and the wind had me hanging on to the grips!

Hey Kal, I'm loving what you are working on here!!! I'm about to dive into a 72 R5 rebuild and would love to put a set of tuned pipes on that are something like the ones your running there.Would you be willing to share where or who you got them from? Thank you for sharing!!!

I realise this is a year later but try to orient the filters vertically and they'll feed better. If you were actually running into fuel starvation (didn't seem like it) you could switch to sintered bronze filters but probably not an issue.

Sounds like it’s running quite lean, which also could explain a cylinder temperature that’s high

Great bike but not for modern day use. You're going to want a bike that will not lose 30% of its power after 10 minutes of freeway usage. Performance parts for these air cooled engines are 3 times more expensive than liquid cooled 2 stroke twins. For the amount of money spent on that the minimal power delivery is not worth it at all. Not even if they are ported and piped. The auxiliary transfer port is too small, only 13 millimeters wide. Modern cars can easily overtake these bikes on freeways. Want to be safe? Keep the bike, but get a modern engine with modern horsepower and put that air cooled motor in a shifter kart.

Is my project build. Took 5 years. I have other daily use bikes. I take it to shows and dont go on the highway. Not looking to commute or go 100mph. Thanks for the advice. I usually just take it on 30 minute cruises and stay local.

    • @Mike-to7nu
      @Mike-to7nu 5 років тому +2

No prob. If you're having trouble bumping into neutral from a stand still, bump it into neutral while the bike is still rolling a little. All the twinline motors have hard cam stopper plates. Some people grind them down a little for easier shifting for drag racing.

I wouldn't say that. If you have an RD or R5 that was broken in properly and tuned properly. It easily can be usable for every day riding.
The liquid cooled 2 strokes are 5k and up in the RD series. More specifically the RZ350. Hard to get specofoc.parts for them but the power valves and liquid really helps.
Not much beats a classic though.

Watch yur damn mouth! Take it back, You take that back NOW!
Seriously though. I have a 72 R5C. yea. there are bikes that are safer and faster but my bike is plenty fast and very easy to handle in the city as well as the country ride home. But most importantly, Its about the usefulness of such a machine. you dont put it on a shelf and let her watch you give your attention to another woman, I mean machine.
I digress. The journey not the destination, less is more, old to new. Cmon man you get it dont you!? I rode today in 40deg (F) 20 mph winds and light rain. I was in a hoody and jeans. some just get it done.
