I remember that in 1988 there was a program on the local Chinese channel in Hong Kong called Sunday New Zone, which was dedicated to introducing Western music. This program spent more than 45 minutes of the one hour of the program introducing George, and it was broadcast continuously. With the release of the three MVs in the Faith album, you can imagine how phenomenal the global craze George created back then. He obviously an international icon.

He thought his only way to escape the pain was to do such and drugs unfortunately are so addictive its hard to let go. He donated so much to charity and helped others anonymously and has done a ton for the LGBT community. He was flawed as all people are, but the important part is he wasn't a hedonist searching to be a menace to society but someone who felt alone, misunderstood, and lost. It may seem like wealth and fame could make all of that go away but it doesn't. Star People '97 by him iterates those feelings of money solving nothing.

It's amazing that George produced this album almost completely by himself! His first ever solo album which won awards left, right and centre - but very much deserved! For those of us who grew up alongside George's career, it doesn't seem all that long ago, for myself anyway. He was the complete package of songwriter, producer, musician, outstanding vocalist, brilliant performer, great stage presence with the ability to always connect with his audience, philanthropist and even dabbled in some acting. George had it all and more! A very mature artist and young man from before the time his career took off. It's very few people who are ever truly blessed with such genius. He simply didn't wish to change himself, yet be true to who he was and his goals. Becoming a famous worldwide singer-songwriter at only 18yrs really blew his mind and it certainly did when he went solo with Faith. He loved performing, his supporters, and working on albums but hated the Music Industry and what came with it. He dreaded having to do endless interviews and promotion of his work. He simply wanted to write and saw the rest as a waste of time. It should be the record companies doing the promotional work, although he can't escape having to do some too. After the release of Faith, it was chaotic for him and he was burnt out whilst still incredibly young. No-one cared. It got to the point that when he released his next album, he refused to promote it. Yet, who hates the video to Freedom 90? It's full of super-models, both sexes, and a great video. Yet Sony was still up in arms. All the guy wanted was to grieve for his first true love, whilst resting his worn out body and mind. That's not to much to ask considering the circumstances. What good is a burnt out star to anyone? Yes, his life would have been much happier if everyone had stood back, (press/media, record label etc.) if they actually took the time to know him personally and understood that he needed time to himself due to the vulnerabilities he had, but the media were obsessed with him and refused to let up following him around endlessly. This didn't mean that he was miserable 24/7. George had his private life and amazing private times. His cousin posted a video, although it's not our business as it's George's off time, but shows him snorkelling with family. It's those times that we don't get to witness, nor should we, during his down time that he experienced great joy too. He was surrounded by a small, extremely loyal group of friends that he could be himself around. In a nutshell, he wore his heart on his sleeve and felt very deeply. When emotions are so close to the surface like George's, it makes it so much harder to appreciate great times when constantly hounded by media. Imagine the frustration? It was simpler things that made him happy such as donating money to whomever needed it, lounging around at home or on holiday, the things that we all take for granted. Appearing at Charity Events or in television skits. He was a great sport when it came to stepping up to raise money for a good cause. We don't see too many others who are well-known doing this. I agree that George didn't get to experience the happiness he thought he would get after working so hard for it. Yet, he enjoyed some wonderful times during his lifetime and made a pretty penny that made it easier as well. There's a line in one of his songs that says "....the road that I had walked upon, Well it filled my pockets but emptied out my soul". He had stated that his future albums would be available to be downloaded by anyone for free as he had been well paid over the years and didn't require anymore of the public's money. Unfortunately, that next album wasn't meant to be made, but George enjoyed a wealthy lifestyle none the less and did enjoy many things that most could never afford to do. I would never state that I wished he was alive still, as he is finally at peace and deserves to enjoy this. Sure, fame bought him great misery, but it brought him great joy too. Maybe, it balanced out somehow?💖🎶

Hardly a day rarely goes by that I haven't listened to something of George's great work. Only moments ago I was watching him on some videos. He's like a faithful friend who is always around when needed. He was even singing 'Spinning the Wheel' whilst I was connecting with a very hard floor and broke my predominant arm in three places! Was he implying something?, I often ask myself. Yes, it was a great time and still is, as George gifted something of himself to us whenever he released a song, which we get to continue to enjoy to this day.💖🎶

Every time I hear the church organ playing Freedom in the intro I am struck by the profundity it achieved, despite being a few seconds of a simple 80s pop song. It conveyed George's reinvention and rebirth - a new beginning - so beautifully. Followed by that rocking steel guitar; that joyous, infectious beat. It's appropriate that George was of Greek descent - his voice and charisma were surely on direct loan from the gods. It is bittersweet to hear the song's promise of what was to come today, knowing its maker's story is now over. I regret I lost my appreciation for George after Faith.. following Listen Without Prejudice he seemed to become dour, bitter, complaining, frustrated. I regret I didn't understand at the time what he was going through; the heavy burden fame, his insecurities, sorrows, fears and near death placed on him. But I sure appreciate him now, blessed with a talent that ran so wide and deep it still moves and inspires, even if it is only an echo now. I still can't quite believe he's gone; death seems impossible for a man who was so full of life. I guess leaving on Christmas day carries some symbolism - another birth - moving on to the next adventure, whatever it may be. I hope in the twilight of his consciousness George Michael found the peace that often seemed to elude him during his life. He gave so much to so many. Resolution - freedom - is the very least he deserved.

My mom was so in love with George Michael when he first came out in the early 80’s. George grew on me in the mid 90’s with Fastlove. His music was constantly in my life growing up.

Saw him in concert when I was 16 years old (August 1988) & it was one of the highlights of my life! I didn’t stop dancing & singing through the entire performance! He was 25 at the time & his stamina running around the stage while singing was astonishing! ❤️ & miss him so much!
I first saw him in the song father figure which came in my recommendation ( 1 year before) and instantly he became my favourite singer. I'm 16 now and I'm very proud to be one of his fan. Hope his soul is singing to all the angles above their. Ohh he himself was one of the angles (though a male😅)

Wow, this man had it all. The voice, the looks, the moves, the kindness -- truly a legend, and absolutely one of the best vocalists in all pop history. I remember the Freddy Mercury tribute concert, and how everyone struggled, like really, really struggled, to do justice to Freddy's vocal mastery. Except George Michael; there was no struggle; he just stepped up and rocked it, with all the power, range, and heart-uplifting nuance that is available to the human voice. I briefly fantasized that Queen would continue with George Michael at the mic, but alas. :'( ....Ok, I'll stop ranting now. This song is just stunning; thanks for the memories, GM. ❤

I remember hearing the surviving members of Queen wanted George to be their new lead singer after the tribute concert. George declined, saying he could never replace Freddie. While I understand that sentiment, it's kinda frustrating. George Michael & Queen would have been a GREAT pairing together throughout the rest of the 1990s.

Who else thinks that George Michael is in a class as an artist all by himself? I can't think of one artist who was this vocally talented who could also write lyrics and Melody, produce and arrange, had stage presence, could dance, could sing any genre he wanted to and be relevant to the times and beyond in which he wrote the music he did. I don’t disagree with anything you say about George’s extraordinary talent, but I do disagree that no one was in his league. Prince was absolutely in his league. He was also sexy as HELL, wrote his own songs, played his own instruments, had an amazing voice, had his own completely unique look, (the shirts with the ruffles, the high heeled boots etc) had tons of charisma and stage presence, brought the same highly sexual energy to his performances (remember the performance where he had his ass cheeks showing?), and could definitely dance. Look no further than the end of the “When doves cry” video.
@@lindseymays144 I grew up in the 80s so I am very familiar with Prince also. No doubt he was a musical genius. I do disagree that Prince could sing anywhere near as good as GM. Prince had a huge range but I don't think he could have sang Somebody to Love which you need one heck of a musical range to be able to sing it as GM did. I never heard anyone say when Prince sings he moves them inside. I don't think he could sing anything like GM could. GM could hit any low or high note; check out his rendition of Jiv Talkin (you can barely tell it's not Barry Gibb singing) or break you into tears with the first time ever I saw your face. Prince couldn't cross over to as many different genres of music the same way GM could or do renditions of songs that many argue were better than the original. I don't think anyone could mention any of Prince's Duets except perhaps with Sheena Easton You've got the look and that's if you know 80s music. GM: Hits with Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Queen, never mind singing a lead role in The Band-aid Song. All Top tier charters on both sides of the Atlantic with the exception of Somebody to Love which is widely considered the best performance of the Freddie Mercury tribute concert. I think everyone knows all those. GM sang with people like Garth Brooks, Pavarotti, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige the list of superstars and genres goes on and on. GM wins best soul artist and album... unreal. There only wasn't a Michael Jackson collaboration because GM walked away. George Michael released 8 albums of music in total. 11 if you count Wham's 3. Prince 48. GM tours 5...8 including Wham. Prince 37. GM 120 million albums sold, Prince 100M. That says it all as far as appeal goes. Had GM toured and recorded like Prince, I can't even imagine how many records he would have sold. Both had careers of three decades. Appearance-wise Prince certainly had his own style but men weren't walking around wearing ruffled shirts or purple clothing. Men wanted to be like GM and tried to copy him. He was so appealing women didn't care at all he was gay and he had model good looks through his whole career. Ask a person who is 18 years of age to name GM songs. They know Careless Whisper, Last Christmas, Freedom (90) and Faith at least. Sadly maybe they only know When Doves Cry or Purple Rain the former being one of the greatest pop songs ever with the latter being equally mesmerizing especially the original long version. I don't think Prince's music with the public will be remembered as much and stand the test of time as the decades pass. His songs and type of melody were just not constructed that way. Most GM songs are with Melody and lyrics containing traditional structure somewhat like classic clothes that never go out of style. Both had stage presence but I don't think you can compare things like GM singing live I want your sex or monkey dance wise to anything Prince has ever done. Both were Trailblazers for artist rights and both shall be remembered for that. We were lucky to have them both!

Prince could not cross to genres like singing with Pavarotti, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney like GM did. GM easily outsold Prince with a fraction of albums and tours just to name two reasons.
PFCD As much as I love GM and comparisons are silly, Prince sold more albums and tours than GM, could sing, play pretty much every instrument, Dance like no other, created a cross over of pop/rock which defined 80s music, was the most gifted of guitarist, GM wasn’t as versatile if we are truthful. GM didn’t write hits for others like prince did, nor did he have movies or the influence that prince has. George’s voice was amazing, but he needed a group of musicians to help shape the music. Prince was able to do it all himself. Plus prince could hold is own on stage with MJ and James brown. having said that, I’d much prefer to have a beer and a smoke with George!

I was in my twenties when George Michael really made it big--global. I was stationed in Europe when all these videos made MTV and other stations. I think I left my soul there. All the time I hear his music and or see his videos it takes me back to Germany, France, Italy, and other countries I got to visit during my time there. When I took leave, I stayed there in Europe. The peoples there really loved him a lot, especially England and the rest of the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, there are young people today who have never heard of him. That is alright though, for we older ones must past on this culture of this era. It was so sad for me to hear how he lived out his last years and of him dying. He will always live through us elders and through his music and music videos. Peace.

With this album, George wrote a glorious page in the history of pop music! I was lucky enough to experience that era. I remember that in 1988 there was a program on the local Chinese channel in Hong Kong called Sunday New Zone, which was dedicated to introducing Western music. This program spent more than 45 minutes of the one hour of the program introducing George, and it was broadcast continuously. With the release of the three MVs in the Faith album, you can imagine how phenomenal the global craze George created back then. He obviously an international icon.

He thought his only way to escape the pain was to do such and drugs unfortunately are so addictive its hard to let go. He donated so much to charity and helped others anonymously and has done a ton for the LGBT community. He was flawed as all people are, but the important part is he wasn't a hedonist searching to be a menace to society but someone who felt alone, misunderstood, and lost. It may seem like wealth and fame could make all of that go away but it doesn't. Star People '97 by him iterates those feelings of money solving nothing.

It's amazing that George produced this album almost completely by himself! His first ever solo album which won awards left, right and centre - but very much deserved! For those of us who grew up alongside George's career, it doesn't seem all that long ago, for myself anyway. He was the complete package of songwriter, producer, musician, outstanding vocalist, brilliant performer, great stage presence with the ability to always connect with his audience, philanthropist and even dabbled in some acting. George had it all and more! A very mature artist and young man from before the time his career took off. It's very few people who are ever truly blessed with such genius. In my humble opinion, George was certainly amongst the very best.🇦🇺💖🕊🎶🎵

He simply didn't wish to change himself, yet be true to who he was and his goals. Becoming a famous worldwide singer-songwriter at only 18yrs really blew his mind and it certainly did when he went solo with Faith. He loved performing, his supporters, and working on albums but hated the Music Industry and what came with it. He dreaded having to do endless interviews and promotion of his work. He simply wanted to write and saw the rest as a waste of time. It should be the record companies doing the promotional work, although he can't escape having to do some too. After the release of Faith, it was chaotic for him and he was burnt out whilst still incredibly young. No-one cared. It got to the point that when he released his next album, he refused to promote it. Yet, who hates the video to Freedom 90? It's full of super-models, both sexes, and a great video. Yet Sony was still up in arms. All the guy wanted was to grieve for his first true love, whilst resting his worn out body and mind. That's not to much to ask considering the circumstances. What good is a burnt out star to anyone? Yes, his life would have been much happier if everyone had stood back, (press/media, record label etc.) if they actually took the time to know him personally and understood that he needed time to himself due to the vulnerabilities he had, but the media were obsessed with him and refused to let up following him around endlessly. This didn't mean that he was miserable 24/7. George had his private life and amazing private times. His cousin posted a video, although it's not our business as it's George's off time, but shows him snorkelling with family. It's those times that we don't get to witness, nor should we, during his down time that he experienced great joy too. He was surrounded by a small, extremely loyal group of friends that he could be himself around. In a nutshell, he wore his heart on his sleeve and felt very deeply. When emotions are so close to the surface like George's, it makes it so much harder to appreciate great times when constantly hounded by media. Imagine the frustration? It was simpler things that made him happy such as donating money to whomever needed it, lounging around at home or on holiday, the things that we all take for granted. Appearing at Charity Events or in television skits. He was a great sport when it came to stepping up to raise money for a good cause. We don't see too many others who are well-known doing this. I agree that George didn't get to experience the happiness he thought he would get after working so hard for it. Yet, he enjoyed some wonderful times during his lifetime and made a pretty penny that made it easier as well. There's a line in one of his songs that says "....the road that I had walked upon, Well it filled my pockets but emptied out my soul". He had stated that his future albums would be available to be downloaded by anyone for free as he had been well paid over the years and didn't require anymore of the public's money. Unfortunately, that next album wasn't meant to be made, but George enjoyed a wealthy lifestyle none the less and did enjoy many things that most could never afford to do. I would never state that I wished he was alive still, as he is finally at peace and deserves to enjoy this. Sure, fame bought him great misery, but it brought him great joy too. Maybe, it balanced out somehow?💖🎶

He's like a faithful friend who is always around when needed. He was even singing 'Spinning the Wheel' whilst I was connecting with a very hard floor and broke my predominant arm in three places! Every time I hear the church organ playing Freedom in the intro I am struck by the profundity it achieved, despite being a few seconds of a simple 80s pop song. It conveyed George's reinvention and rebirth - a new beginning - so beautifully. Followed by that rocking steel guitar; that joyous, infectious beat. It's appropriate that George was of Greek descent - his voice and charisma were surely on direct loan from the gods. It is bittersweet to hear the song's promise of what was to come today, knowing its maker's story is now over.
I regret I lost my appreciation for George after Faith.. following Listen Without Prejudice he seemed to become dour, bitter, complaining, frustrated. I regret I didn't understand at the time what he was going through; the heavy burden fame, his insecurities, sorrows, fears and near death placed on him. But I sure appreciate him now, blessed with a talent that ran so wide and deep it still moves and inspires, even if it is only an echo now.
I still can't quite believe he's gone; death seems impossible for a man who was so full of life. I guess leaving on Christmas day carries some symbolism - another birth - moving on to the next adventure, whatever it may be. I hope in the twilight of his consciousness George Michael found the peace that often seemed to elude him during his life. He gave so much to so many. Resolution - freedom - is the very least he deserved.

Wow, this man had it all. The voice, the looks, the moves, the kindness -- truly a legend, and absolutely one of the best vocalists in all pop history. I remember the Freddy Mercury tribute concert, and how everyone struggled, like really, really struggled, to do justice to Freddy's vocal mastery. Except George Michael; there was no struggle; he just stepped up and rocked it, with all the power, range, and heart-uplifting nuance that is available to the human voice. I briefly fantasized that Queen would continue with George Michael at the mic, but alas. :'( ....Ok, I'll stop ranting now. This song is just stunning; thanks for the memories, GM. ❤

I remember hearing the surviving members of Queen wanted George to be their new lead singer after the tribute concert. George declined, saying he could never replace Freddie. While I understand that sentiment, it's kinda frustrating. George Michael & Queen would have been a GREAT pairing together throughout the rest of the 1990s.

I can't think of one artist who was this vocally talented who could also write lyrics and Melody, produce and arrange, had stage presence, could dance, could sing any genre he wanted to and be relevant to the times and beyond in which he wrote the music he did. He was visually stunning, knew what look sold as a performer, was a kind Sweet Soul who was so giving of his own money to help others....yup NO ONE ELSE IS IN HIS LEAGUE! RIP dear George and thanks for everything you did and gave us of yourself. You left an eternal mark on music and Humanity.
I don’t disagree with anything you say about George’s extraordinary talent, but I do disagree that no one was in his league. Prince was absolutely in his league. He was also sexy as HELL, wrote his own songs, played his own instruments, had an amazing voice, had his own completely unique look, (the shirts with the ruffles, the high heeled boots etc) had tons of charisma and stage presence, brought the same highly sexual energy to his performances (remember the performance where he had his ass cheeks showing?), and could definitely dance. Look no further than the end of the “When doves cry” video.
@@lindseymays144 I grew up in the 80s so I am very familiar with Prince also. No doubt he was a musical genius. I do disagree that Prince could sing anywhere near as good as GM. Prince had a huge range but I don't think he could have sang Somebody to Love which you need one heck of a musical range to be able to sing it as GM did. I never heard anyone say when Prince sings he moves them inside. I don't think he could sing anything like GM could. GM could hit any low or high note; check out his rendition of Jiv Talkin (you can barely tell it's not Barry Gibb singing) or break you into tears with the first time ever I saw your face. Prince couldn't cross over to as many different genres of music the same way GM could or do renditions of songs that many argue were better than the original. I don't think anyone could mention any of Prince's Duets except perhaps with Sheena Easton You've got the look and that's if you know 80s music. GM: Hits with Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Queen, never mind singing a lead role in The Band-aid Song. All Top tier charters on both sides of the Atlantic with the exception of Somebody to Love which is widely considered the best performance of the Freddie Mercury tribute concert. I think everyone knows all those. GM sang with people like Garth Brooks, Pavarotti, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige the list of superstars and genres goes on and on. GM wins best soul artist and album... unreal. There only wasn't a Michael Jackson collaboration because GM walked away.
George Michael released 8 albums of music in total. 11 if you count Wham's 3. Prince 48. GM tours 5...8 including Wham. Prince 37. GM 120 million albums sold, Prince 100M. That says it all as far as appeal goes. Had GM toured and recorded like Prince, I can't even imagine how many records he would have sold. Both had careers of three decades.
Appearance-wise Prince certainly had his own style but men weren't walking around wearing ruffled shirts or purple clothing. Men wanted to be like GM and tried to copy him. He was so appealing women didn't care at all he was gay and he had model good looks through his whole career.
Ask a person who is 18 years of age to name GM songs. They know Careless Whisper, Last Christmas, Freedom (90) and Faith at least. Sadly maybe they only know When Doves Cry or Purple Rain the former being one of the greatest pop songs ever with the latter being equally mesmerizing especially the original long version. I don't think Prince's music with the public will be remembered as much and stand the test of time as the decades pass. His songs and type of melody were just not constructed that way. Most GM songs are with Melody and lyrics containing traditional structure somewhat like classic clothes that never go out of style.
Both had stage presence but I don't think you can compare things like GM singing live I want your sex or monkey dance wise to anything Prince has ever done.
Both were Trailblazers for artist rights and both shall be remembered for that. We were lucky to have them both!

Prince could not cross to genres like singing with Pavarotti, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney like GM did. GM easily outsold Prince with a fraction of albums and tours just to name two reasons.
PFCD As much as I love GM and comparisons are silly, Prince sold more albums and tours than GM, could sing, play pretty much every instrument, Dance like no other, created a cross over of pop/rock which defined 80s music, was the most gifted of guitarist, GM wasn’t as versatile if we are truthful. GM didn’t write hits for others like prince did, nor did he have movies or the influence that prince has. George’s voice was amazing, but he needed a group of musicians to help shape the music. Prince was able to do it all himself. Plus prince could hold is own on stage with MJ and James brown. having said that, I’d much prefer to have a beer and a smoke with George!

I was in my twenties when George Michael really made it big--global. I was stationed in Europe when all these videos made MTV and other stations. I think I left my soul there. All the time I hear his music and or see his videos it takes me back to Germany, France, Italy, and other countries I got to visit during my time there. When I took leave, I stayed there in Europe. The peoples there really loved him a lot, especially England and the rest of the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, there are young people today who have never heard of him. That is alright though, for we older ones must past on this culture of this era. It was so sad for me to hear how he lived out his last years and of him dying. He will always live through us elders and through his music and music videos. Peace.
