Let's see how Amazon's cheapest precision scale ($7.99 Prime) compares with my A&D FX-120i scale ($750.00). In this video I test this cheap scale for drift, accuracy, and precision. Will it measure up? Watch the video to find out!

Hornady slapped their name on it and charged $30 for it.
Yeah, same guts for sure! I got set with Hornady kit, pretty average scales that dont hold zero well and drift a fair bit.I use a dispenser these days anyway.
I was thinking the same... Mine is not that bad, but it does not meet my expectation. Will buy something else.
Yeah I picked one up at a local gunshow and was not very impressed with it.

That’s pretty close to my Hornady scale...
Come on Gavin, that's a Drug dealers scale ! It will always slant in the dealers favor ..
Hahahahaha - I'm sure a high percentage of these are used for shady business...
@@Ultimatereloader I don't know why cocaince dealers don't use a calibrated scale with automatically dumping like a progressive loader. Smh it would streamline and cut costs.

Looking forward to further vids in this series. Try the: WAOAW W-01-50 Digital Milligram Scale 50 X 0.001Gram Reloading scale. I’ve loaded my best ammo on this, and would verify with the rcbs balance scale.
I got scared as soon as I saw the scale because it looks identical to the Hornady scale I got with my press as part of the package but mine is way more accurate and consistent. I can’t wait for you to review and test more scales in a bit higher price range since I’m looking to upgrade but don’t want to break the bank on something in the $750 range. Thanks as always for the great information and looking forward to this series continuing!
After a couple cheapies I ripped the moldy bills from the piggy bank and got a Dillon digital. Should've done that years ago.

Would be good to see the normal electronic powder scales go up against the similarly priced jewellers and prospecting type scales.
This scale is very similar to the one that comes in the Hornady Lock N Load kit. Same fast auto turn off. Same calibration sequence. The scale that came with my hornady kit doesn’t drift like this one does, great video it was very informative.
I am looking forward to you testing other cheap scales. I got one that Johnny's Reloading Bench suggested and compare it to my 505 and it is pretty damn good but I have never seen it tested in PMEL type of testing.
Me too. I want to see how the WAOAW compares.I bought one of those WAOAW and Lyman check weights. $16.99 on Amazon. I spot check with weights close to my charge to make sure everything is working.
Also had to add 2.8 grains of solder to my cal weight to get the scale to read +/-0.02 grains.
2k for a scale is way outa my league.
I hand an older rcbs that seems to work really well, but I am old school and sometimes double check with a oldie but goodie Dillon balance beam scale.
It will be great to see all the scale reviews. Since we all can't afford a $750 one. Hopefully some more affordable ones prove worthy.
Joe Jr you can actually get the FX120i for $475 shipped
Mike not much better than what?

I have one just like in the video from Amazon. My results were the same with inconsistency. Plus it was super sensitive to moving air, even my normal breathing would rattle it. Its okay for finding which cartridges don't have powder in them and simple non-critical stuff. I'm not a heavy breather either.
I use the exact scale, it has the Hornady label on it.
At least it is slightly better than a random number generator.
Haha
Thanks Gavin. It was a good comedy skit, for that scale :-)
Looking forward to other scale tests in this vein! Currently using the scale that comes with the Hornady Lock and Load set (bad, but not as bad as this one!) so it will be very useful to see which scales have the best results for my next scale purchase.
Do want to try a new pocket scale? Buddy
young wong nope, I’ve got a better one now.
@@TheOutdoorGeneralist ok, thanks a lot
I've got a Gem 250, it works well, but I watch the negative reading when the pan is off to see if has changed, it's quicker than waiting until the you replace the pan and wait for a reading.
I have a scale similar to that, American Weigh Scales brand. I weigh envelopes before mailing and ink. Turns out 1ml of my ink is basically .01g so that makes going the syringe pretty easy when I know how much the cartridge weight VS when is full.
I think it's a perfect $7.99 scale. You got exactly what you expected.
I'm more interested in high value for the money scales. I still use a beam balance for most loads. Yes it's slow as dirt but I can see +/- 1 stick of powder resolution. I do however want a decent electronic scale so I weigh water volume on fired brass. That's a pain to do on a beam balance. Problem is identifying the right scale that will really be .1 grain resolution without busting the bank.
I have two of these, for 5 bucks each and found them great for scooping within one grain and trickling in with a Redding balance that will resolve one kernel of R7. Gets me close. The cheap scale rounds up at the .5 grain up and down. Does a great job for getting close to a trickle load. The cheap one does best with a good battery. I used calibrated weights to figure out the average. Works for me the way I use it. It tares and zeros immediately and requires that but takes no time to accomplish. Drift happens. Mine works great with proper battery and the way I use it. I use the power pan at 104 grains for the start of each measure. Using this and a balance I can do a precision charge in under 45 seconds average for 20 rounds.
My original Hornady LnL scale was like this. The replacement they sent looks better and had been more repeatable and closer to the precision one we use in the hospital lab like yours. But my RCBS Chargemaster 1500 has been really tight. Now that I've updated the speed in the SW it's right up with my reloading speed. Just turn it on go grab some coffee and come back before loading.
I have used this scale. I'm on a tight budget so it had to do. Yes you have to tare often. You also can tell what's going on when the scale is empty. If the empty number changes you need to tare.
I have a cheap little frankford arsenal digital scale that works ok but its not trickle friendly. Upgraded to the chargemaster lite and have no complaints on that and never use the frankford anymore.
I think a Beam Scale
is more reliable at the lower end in terms of cost. They are not very convenient, but they are decent for setting up a Powder Measure.
Yep, Hornady has their name on this scale.I use my Lyman dampening scale to verify my charges if my Hornady starts acting up ,which it does from time to time.
it depends on how much money you are welling to spend good video thanks gavin 👍
The most attention that $7 scale has ever had!
Great job on the reivew!
Hahahaha- so true! :)
Great for dealers of the green stuff not so good for dealers of the white Columbian stuff. I've got this scale, for nothing sinister may I add. Thanks for doing a test!!
Exactly what I thought.... plus gotnthensame cheap scales for my smoke lol .... it seems to work fine for half Oz and Ozs lol
The best cheap scale that I used to reload 1000's of rounds. Homgeek from Amazon TL-series 50gx0.001g. I think it was 16 bucks. Same as WAOAW W-01-50 Digital Milligram Scale 50 X 0.001Gram Reloading Jewelry Scale.
This is why I bought a set of Lyman check weights. Can't beat the peace of mind! I use them to verify my Frankford Arsenal platinum scale and RCBS Chargemaster lite, then weigh the chargest between the two scales to look at consistency. System works very well for me and doesn't slow me down much once the groove gets going.

@@youngwong2583 Nah, I'm good. Guy.
@@varanidguy ok
Will you show how good the beam scales are that come with the RCBS reloading kits? I am about to start out in reloading and I am not sure I trust them. Keep up the good work.
One thing with the cheep scales that you should be aware of is that they take a while to "settle" the weight. So if you leave the powder pan on the scale until you see a "black dot" (on left hand side I think it was) you will probably get a little better results. Still it is a cheep scale so there will "probably" be some drift. Would be nice to see if leaving the power on the scale until it "settles" will improve the results or not.
I bought a cheap Homgeek that has been exceptional when I got it I cut a piece of aluminum that weighs 5.82gn. It reads the same before each session for a year and a half so far. Not too shabby for $15. The check weight weighs 5.8 on my 5 0 5.
I still use my old & trusty RCBS beam scale I've had for over 20 yrs. If I need a reference, I'll use my RCBS 750 electronic one, also several years old. More accuracy?: My late Dad's Voland & Sons/N.Y. from circa 1.950's he used to actually make precision prescriptions for his patients!!; Pretty much complicated though!😁
I use the Frankfort Arsenal scale sold most places for about 40 dollars. I also see others using this same scale on UA-cam and in the forums.
Any plans to test balance beam scales?

@John Beige Yes and I use one too.
Can you review the frankford arsenal small reloading scale? It has 50 gram weight I bought it at my local gun shop for $35 5 years ago. And this is what I use to reload 9mm and .300 blackout. Am looking for new scale. And you're channel has gave me so much info. I want to get into my first PRS match.
A couple years back I bought a "precision" scale, can't remember the name right now, it was like $160 and in went to the hundreds for measuring. Within 2 days it made me so angry with all its changing number, I bought a Sartorius by the end of the 2nd day and never looked back. That is one frustration that no longer exists in my reloading. I always recommend buying the best scale you can afford, it will take a lot of frustration out of your life if you are into precision shooting.... I could not watch but just a little over half the video, my blood pressure was rising... Look at the medical bills a good scale can save...
Were you concerned that the AND scale had differing unloaded readings ? Jumps between .10 & .12
For these cheap scales the best thing to do is tare it yourself. Weigh the pan a few times, then write down the tare value and subtract that from the actual measurements. It's more of a pain, but once you get the hang of it it drastically improves repeatability. The problem is that the 0 point is drifting, so doing it manually ensures that you can re-zero the scale after each weight.
Good enough for nose candy, good enough for a powder charge 🤣
I used this scale and it works for me really well
So does mine . Maybe because we don't use it beside other electrical appliances. Because to be fair the instructions manual does say "...a close distance to other electronic equipment can cause an adverse effect on the reliability and accuracy of your scale."
So where to find that trusted scale in this video you are mainly using in this video ?
I have a Dillon and a Lyman I love them I will never used no other
How did you precisely measure your powder to text the two scales?
It might be good enough for rifle loads in the low to mid zone, but I wouldn't trust it for near max or for small-capacity pistol loads where there isn't much difference between safe and overcharge. I wouldn't trust that thing to narrower than half a grain.
Mr Toobe. There has to be a scale in the $200 to $300 range for all of us. I'm thinking about Ohaus, but you're suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Do you have to re-calibrate it with the tray on it an empty tray if you look right now you’re at 12.82 last time I looked at it were 12.76. set the tare when the tray is on the scale
The cheap scale doesn't use odd numbers in the tenths column only even, this is common with cheap scales on grain weights.
Therefore weights that are close to middle fluctuate to the closest even number up or down...
Just got these scales and they’ve arrived with the display screen on upside down 🤣🤣
*CONSISTANCY* matters more than the scales "accuracy" for us handloaders Example: One can perform a ladder charge and record an accuracy node on a certain charge using a particular cheaper scale. Though the A&D scale may show it .1 gr off. It's irrelevant if the other scale can consistently weigh a charge. Many of us use the WAOW scale from Amazon. Try that scale out🤙 great demo
This brings of the question? Does 1 granular or .005 gr make a difference in accuracy? I have yet to see actual results. I constantly get replies to get a high end scale. But the folks that use the auto trickler are just dumping charges in the .1gr scale. Sooo I need definite answers in why one should invest on a high end scale?. Does .005 grain or one stick of granules make that much of a difference?
Kenny- good to hear from you bro! I'd say that these things really get more and more important as you go to 1000 yards and beyond... And I'll be working on some stories in the "fact -vs- fiction" model to prove or disprove these things...
I have a few cheap scales in the $40 range as well as the hornady autocharger that do the same thing as this cheap scale, its maddening. I tried checking the scales against each other while loading and you end up with wildly different charges over 50 rounds. That's why I got an AND fx120i and an auto trickler V3, I got tired of chasing loads around when trying to load develop for LR and ELR.
Hi, do you think that it will improve shooting accuracy if you have a arrow scale? Thanks a lot!
So i visit this channel from time to time... So can you recommend a scale that normal people can afford?

You needed to give these small scale a longer time to settle
I agree several times I seen it read correct right before he lifted the pan but doesn't acknowledge it not saying one way or other on the scale but be fair... cheap scale equals few seconds to settle.
Josh Brown Yes, I agree. Also, he only verified the weight one time on his high dollar scale. While I’m sure his expensive scale is far more accurate than the cheapie, it would have been nice to see him verify the weight on the expensive scale as many times as he did on the cheapie.
I have this cheap ass scale I got off amazon for $5, it’s a Frankfort arsenal clone, it works fantastic
WAOAW W-01-50 best cheap scale out there in my opinion :)
What you spend your money on is what you get. Try the OXO KITCHEN SCALE NEXT Gavin just want to see if it works for you.?
Good idea, that would be a fun test as well.
Hi Gavin
Can you please run this test on the gempro 20 ($20 milligram scale) and the far higher priced gempro 300? I have had great success with the gempro20 and it callibrates and compares very close to beam and higher priced electronics.
Also, in the test, can you test how well these scale recognise small incremental changes such happens when you trickle powder charges in. Ie weigh 25gr. Then add a 0.1gr weight and see the weight change.
Yes a digital vs beam scale
I have the 30 dollar hornady, glad I didn't go that cheap but where's the sweet spot in the accuracy vs cost struggle?
Useless scale but great video 👍 LFT you testing the more traditional scales from Dillon, Lyman, RCBS, etc...
Keep up the good work 😊🇨🇦
To be fair the instructions manual does say "...a close distance to other electronic equipment can cause an adverse effect on the reliability and accuracy of your scale."
Suggest the WAOAW scale, think a lot of people are using those now, So looking forward to future videos, I need a good scale for trickling but cant justify 700 bucks
Alex Allen you can get the fx120i for $475 to your door. I had been using the WAOAW scale and I am noticeably happier while reloading with the fx120i lol. The WAOAW would “drift” +/- 0.004 grams for my “zero”....and that inconsistency drove me absolutely bonkers. I’d pick the pan up and put it down multiple times before I’d dump a charge. The fx120i holds the exact same zero, time after time. I love it. It was worth every penny to me.
It would help to budget twice as much and select a 50 or 25 gram full scale unit. Some are no doubt trash. But some are at least as good as the low end lyman, frankford arsenal.
“In the full write up”... how did you say that with a straight face? Surely you must be joking! 😂
Looks identical to the Hornady scale I spent $40 on. The accuracy is absolutely no better either. If I had to guess, I'd think they probably came off the same assembly line. At least your junk was $32 cheaper. Lol
Yep. Hornady packaged that exact scale with a calibration weight and a powder pan. Waste of money. I have one too.

Wow! I haven't seen that Hornady scale. At least they list the correct batteries...
My only comparison is to a Lyman beam scale, which I trusted. I only wanted a fast digital to check every few charges on. It was a complete fail.
@@Ultimatereloader I bought it from a local store because I wanted something faster than my lee scale to check charges. Figured if it was sold by Hornady for reloading it couldn't be that bad... I was so so very wrong
This goes look exactly like the hornady 1500 g1 scale. I would give mine a slight better result than this one. I put a video up on this a couple weeks ago, but wont post it here without UR approval.
How can you compare scales with the price difference that is on the bench crazy
this cheap scale really works, better than the triple priced i have
Yeah. Hate those cheap scales. However if you would have separated those scales with some distance your results may have been different. The electronics of the big scale probably played havoc with the little one. That little one could not have enough shielding to stop any close or more powerful signals that would interfere with and influence the unit.
Was your cell phone in your pocket that jacks with those cheap scale
mine is blinking and saying lo even with new batteries
It would've been nice if the test consisted of repeatability but with delayed times to simulate the actual reloading process. This would allow the scale more time to show errors not caused by memory.
Do want to try a new pocket scale? Buddy
What about "WAOAW W-01-50 Digital Milligram Scale"
Gavin, I’m a big fan of “most” of your vids, and I sure your high buck scale is far more accurate and consistent then this cheepie. However, it it would have been nice if you would have verified the individual load weights on your expensive scale as many times as you did on the cheepie, just to expose the drift (if any) on your high buck unit.
Also, in all fairness to the “cheepie”, you should have aloud the cheepie to settle a second or so longer between re checks.
And to be fair the instructions manual does say "...a close distance to other electronic equipment can cause an adverse effect on the reliability and accuracy of your scale."
Lol.... looks like the scale in the Hornady classic kit
Had a set of these unfortunately they went straight in the bin after a short time.
have one of these cheap scales and had to stop using it because i couldnt trust it, it was inconsistent (would range from 66.5-72.2gr for my powder pan) and had some over charged loads that ended up popping primers in my 308. not worth blowing up my gun or hurting myself or someone else to save some money. ended up getting a redding beam scale from a yard sale for $8 and will never go back to digital for precision loads
These are mostly used in trap houses. 😂😂😂
We use to sell these in a convenance store to the druggies for $14.99-25usd 😂 They are as accurate as the normal rcbs / Hornady balance beam style.
Who has the best price on the $750 A&D scale? I hear you can get them for around $400 somewhere. I’d buy one for that price and then maybe get the auto-trickled to go with it.

@@youngwong2583 I don't really know but using a 20$ 0.001mg scale is enough to be accurate from 25 to 50mg with 5% off maxium. Calibrate it and try to mesure out exact weights like your currency bills and coins which have standart weight. I noticed an error of -+3% on mine which is acceptable to weight 25+mg of powders. Just put a small weight of couples gramms onto the scale (i use a 4.800g weight and a small bowl of 1.640g) don't tare and add your powder, substract the total weight to your known equippement, you got your dosage pretty right with 3 to 6 % off

I think that the market crowd that this scale is made for is selling 8 balls and dime bags on the corner in the hood.
What do you expect for 8 bucks?
Why did you get the 500gram version? They also sell 0.001 scales and they come in ranges 0-100g, 0-200g, 0-500g. And I mean grams not grains. I would have thought the best one to get would be the 0-100g rather than 500g, Also would have gone for the 0.001 rather than 0.01. Lots of them on youtube and only a couple of dollars more. NOt saying they would be better, hell probably just as bad but just saying if i was to pick one that would have been my first choice as the cheapest one to go for. As somebody said below, even if it performed well, it not a good choice for shooting as it is only 0.01g max resolution.
I got here searching coffee scales. But I'm surprised that the scale is as close to its claimed specs as it is. That thing would be completely adequate for those who just want to know a gram is closer to a gram than it isn't.
Scale with 0.01gram certainty isn't good enough for reloading regardless how precisely it works 1gr. Is .0648 gram. So if compare 10th of grain you shoud have scale with .001 gram certainty.
Totally agree!
