It’s not necessarily the monopoly but the prices they are paying in the bids for the networks. In other countries, the governments objective is low prices for consumers rather than high bids for the network.
It's not a monopoly though WHICH IS WHY IT'S EXPENSIVE. Sprint customers can only use Sprint towers (and some T Mobile). Verizon can only use Verizon towers. Then you have to think of all the nationwide infrastructure upgrades every time there's a new gen rollout... 5G, 4G, LTE, 3G. It gets expensive. T-mobile checked their map in their store for me last week - still does not cover my home. When you are stuck with one provider, it means a 5 Gig plan for four phones every month costs about $130 after fees and taxes. Want unlimited? That goes up to $175 a month. It it absolutely awful - but at least the cell phone works in an emergency when the power goes out. For those who don't know, Mint Mobile's network is T-Mobile. That 5X speed increase with 5G? Only if you buy a new phone costing each around $800 to $1000 dollars.

@brian fike I live in the U.S. I'm American. Denmark does not spend Billions of dollars marketing and advertising. That cost is always passed to the consumer. And they don't push technologies that aren't ready just for money and to sell more phones. 5G is no where near remotely ready in the U.S. You barelyyyy get some of it in the largest 5 inner cities in the US. But phone companies make it seem like it's been ready the last 3 years

Tips:
1. Know your needs
2. Know your budget
3. Read your bill
4.. Pay your bill when due
In these times, you need to know how much you consume. Of course, you also need to know how much you are earning. Then read what's on your bill and pay it before the due comes. When you pay your bill late, there is a late fee (included in your contract). When you pay your bill to reconnect your line again, there is a reconnection fee/s (included also in your contract).

Most of this story covered the infrastructure and other services that are pretty much the same EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD. So none of that is relevant to the cost in the US, which is sky high compared to other countries.
I've watched enough of these to know CNBC never blames their corporate partners, corporate greed, lack of government oversight, or high leverage (debt). It is always the technology, the infrastructure, or the consumers fault.
@Jonathan Parks of course, and Europe is only a small part of the world. Australia is the same size as contiguous USA, with 1/15 the population but still manages to provide better coverage
@Jonathan Parks It costs more per person to deliver. You could also compare Europe's similar population density to USA, or other areas with differing ratios. I have wifi, so I don't need a lot of data.
As to my phone, I use a Samsung SJ7 Star. It's not the flashiest Samsung but it's leagues above the usual crappy phones carriers try to lure new customers in with. The battery life is amazing, I've never had streaming issues, and the screen is crisp instead of that muted, 1990's computer screen cheaper phones may have. And speaking of the screen, it's endured several drops directly on its face onto tile at the store with not a scratch (though I've put a folding case on it as well because I don't care to keep tempting fate). Many people believe that you get a lower quality service from a subsidiary. To a minor extent, this may be true, but the cost to benefit ratio favours corporate owned companies; Cricket, Visible, Boost and Metro. No one would really know that your "high end" smartphone is operating through these companies, if image is your thing. The vast majority of the time, your actual service is virtually identical.
