"Backdoor dominant" is just another way of saying "minor plagal cadence" where the iv chord moves to another voicing that acts as a dominant chord with a root a whole step below the tonic, or where the normal voicing for the iv is left out altogether, leaving just that dominant chord. I always think of this as a minor plagal cadence, regardless of whether the normal iv voicing is present or it is just the related dominant voicing.

More of these breakdowns please. Great insights that can be applied to other tunes.

These videos are really excellent. Breaking down these common harmonic structures is really helpful and makes these pieces very unintimidating.

      That’s great. Thanks Nicholas!
The cool thing about standards is that once you know the changes, they can be as easy or hard as you want. I learned A Train as my first standard 20 years ago, and I’m still learning new ways to play it.
So glad to have you as a subscriber.

Always surprising to me how different classical music and Jazz is harmonically - not in essence, but in use, explanation. I feel that classical musicians (so... I) could benefit A LOT from understanding Jazz principles

Thanks Wim. It fascinates me too, as I was trained in the classical tradition. But this is normal for me now! Haha

You are an amazing teacher - all the knowledge and how to teach us exactly what we need to make progress - thanks! And yes, please continue the deconstruction efforts, especially like the standards you have already shared with us. Bravo!

I wish you would do a whole series (Playlist) of Standard Breakdowns like this one

      Which one would you like?
I enjoy doing them, they just don’t typically do well on the channel. But perhaps the format just needs tweaking. It’s been ages since I posted this.

@@JoshWalshMusic Thanks. I noticed others in the comments love these breakdowns also. Maybe "All of Me". Sometimes it's hard to know how to best treat the various secondary dominants for improvisation (sometimes altered seems right, sometimes Major Phrygian, sometimes Diminished)

@@smatlanta1 okay, Ill put it on the list. Can I count on you to comment when I do? We’ll see if we can get these to get some traction!

Good stuff be cool to see a video like this, then take a step further and add some Barry Harris borrowing to add more motion. Or maybe not even a tune but common chord cadences so it can be applied to lots of tunes.
