I’m happy that they’re finally talking about some form of configuration syncing in Thunderbird. I’ve been wanting something like that for a while, even if only a config export/import capability. One of the reasons I like Thunderbird is that it is cross-platform, running on Linux, Windows and macOS. Being able to set it up once and sync configs will make it much easier.

The attack is location specific. so once you come back to a location it is already aligned with your previous location forever but if you travel to a new location it takes a little time for the satellite to align but it will eventually start.

Thunderbird is so easy to use and convenient. I have to monitor seven email accounts and Thunderbird makes it sooooo easy. No ads, no spying and it really blocks spam and trickery. I only get email on my Linux Mint desktop, but I may start using Thunderbird if it's available on Android.

These companies I think really are run by tyrants. Early days it was all about openess/feespeech/your choice...liberating the people from oppression and control. Now each company is pushing for more control even the companies who sell themselves to privacy conscious people. Mozilla is one of the few companies that is competing with web tech for their browser, so... it is troublesome when they put me into a position support open standards by picking a bad company or accept a mono culture and pick a bad company that's even worse.

aI am using a portable version of Thunderbird, ; its executable and all its data (emails, contacts, parameters) are contained in a portable encrypted virtual disk. Every month, after erasing useless emails, I backup that virtual disk and keep 2 copies on 2 different portable hard disks. I keep at least 3 older copies also. I have not lost one email since about year 2000.

thunderbird is by far the best email client out there, all others are just simply crap. Thunderbird is the only client that actually works like an email client should work. I'm using it on linux as well as windows and apple crap^^

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 2 роки тому +2

That's entirely subjective and a very silly comment to make. I use only Linux (I rid myself of my Microsoft abuser when Windows 7 support ended and have never owned an Apple device in my life) but I stopped using Thunderbird some years ago because it is far too big and bloated for "just dealing with email".
I moved to mutt some years ago and my SUBJECTIVE opinion is that it is far superior to any other email client I have used - yes, it took a while to configure it the way I wanted it and relies heavily on keyboard shortcuts but once those shortcuts get into "muscle memory", there is nothing faster for dealing with emails than mutt.
One question - are you a masochist? It's just that if you consider Windows and Apple to be crap (which ultimately I agree with as a statement) then why do you continue to punish yourself using them?

As far as I recall for a long time Microsoft mail (I presume just their e-mail service, not as likely e-mail clients) downloads remote content to their servers first, making beacons less useful since they just always get marked as read as soon as the e-mail is sent, regardless of whether the user ever opened the message.

Hey Rob, look at this news report from Reuters, thought you would be interested as it looks as if 5G is causing problems around airports. WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters)
Verizon, AT&T agree to delay some 5G deployment until mid-2023
The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that Verizon Communications (VZ.N) and AT&T (T.N) have voluntarily agreed to delay some C-Band 5G usage until July 2023 as air carriers work to retrofit airplanes to ensure they will not face interference.
The two carriers agreed in January to delay through July 5 switching on some wireless towers and depowering others near airports. Verizon said Friday the new agreement will allow it to "lift the voluntary limitations on our 5G network deployment around airports in a staged approach over the coming months meaning even more consumers and businesses will benefit from the tremendous capabilities of 5G technology."
AT&T said with the FAA it had "developed a more tailored approach to controlling signal strength around runways that allows us to activate more towers and increase signal strength." AT&T added that it had voluntarily "chosen in good faith to implement these more tailored precautionary measures so that airlines have additional time to retrofit equipment."
Concerns that the 5G service could interfere with airplane altimeters, which give data on a plane's height above the ground and are crucial for bad-weather landing, led to disruptions at some U.S. airports earlier this year.
In recent months, the Federal Aviation Administration has been urging airlines to complete retrofits of some airplane radio altimeters.
Acting FAA Administrator Billy Nolen on Wednesday urged the chief executives of major U.S. airlines to move quickly to address risks from a 5G wireless rollout by installing filters on radio altimeters, in a bid to avoid potential disruptions at key airports from next month.
Airlines for America, an industry trade group representing American Airlines (AAL.O), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), United Airlines (UAL.O) and others, said at an FAA meeting Friday they learned "the vast majority" of members fleet of 4,800 total aircraft "would need to be retrofitted by July 2023" and raised questions if that is feasible. "Given that the FAA has not even approved solutions nor have manufacturers manufactured these products for most of this fleet, it is not at all clear that carriers can meet what appears to be an arbitrary deadline."
The FAA said Friday "filters and replacement units for the mainline commercial fleet should be available on a schedule that would permit the work to be largely completed by July 2023. After that time, the wireless companies expect to operate their networks in urban areas with minimal restrictions."
Airlines CEOs on Jan. 17 had warned of an impending "catastrophic" aviation crisis that could have grounded almost all traffic because of the 5G deployment.

Hi Rob, I want to ask an off-topic question: I have a five-year-old Windows 10 Desktop PC with a 500g SSD and a 2Tb HHD. I want to sell it, but not my info on it. I have reformatted the HHD (the D:drive) with the built-in Win tools. How do I reformat the C: drive (the SSD) so it is REALLY wiped even though that's the one running the Win 10? I don't want to do IT surgery; I'm hoping for a SW solution. Any ideas? TIA!

You can buy software to do it with a military grade wipe.
A simple free way to do a fairly secure wipe would be to put the C: drive in another PC as a slave drive :d or e: etc. then delete the partition using Disk Management.
To stop someone recreating the partition and unformatting it, I would make a small partition and format it with FAT32, then copy a few files over then format it with NTFS and copy a few non important files to it and then delete the partition. After, create a full disk partition and format it. Then install whatever OS you want to sell it with.
This will mix up the Master Boot Record and it will be difficult if not nearly impossible for the average person to get any data from it.
If you don't have another PC to do it, download a Linux distro and make a bootable USB stick then boot to the USB stick and format the drive, Then install Linux on it, this will overwrite the MBR and the beginning of the disk so will also stop the average person getting at any data.
You can format it again and install a different OS if you want.

@@anthonysach Thanks for your fast reply, Anthony. The 2nd option is way more than I want to get into. The 1st option: "You can buy software to do it with a military grade wipe. " Do I need another pc to run that off of? Probably a dumb question but I'm asking.

If you want to be REALLY sure, remember hard drives are dirt cheap these days. Take your C drive out and destroy it. Drill holes in it, whatever. Buy a cheap SSD, put it in the computer and sell it as is. Then you will know FOR CERTAIN no one can ever recover anything you ever had on it.

@@1cathexis Not sure what happened to my second reply, for some reason I have had a few vanish / deleted recently.
Someone else has mentioned getting another cheap drive for the PC as well, but I would say you could keep the old ones as a back up and encrypt them. I will do another reply because it may have been deleted because of a link or for mentioning a product, maybe because G is not paid for advertising it.

I installed Linux on my work laptop and tried to set up Thunderbird to work with my company's Microsoft Exchange server. Other than email, things just don't work (Calendar only syncs partially, employee contact lists are missing and don't auto-complete, no Zoom interopability etc.). Is there a better Linux email client that mimics Outlook and plays nice with the corporate constraints of the Microsoft clown world?

I wouldn't hold my breath until Thunderbird figures out a monetisation strategy (like charging for their software). You almost never find intuitive free and open source applications with great UX that are not backed or funded by large corporations. The exceptions are rare.
Mozilla itself (and Firefox) wouldn't have survived without Google as it is its main source of funding.

Thunderbird was great. But with the versions it gets more and more power hungry.
Start version 31.4 in 4 seconds (with some thousand emails and 3 pops installed) vs. version 11 seconds (with only a few test emails and one pop installed)
Also we don't have to talk about the UI and lack of addons - as good addons don't work anymore and the UI is looking like a byproduct of too many drugs by the devs.
    Same shame problem with Firefox.

I am getting attacked now. every night.
