You should also make an attempt to update the decklists with modern spins. It isn’t very reflective of the deck/cards to play a version that came out like 6 years ago. During Kobolds and Catacombs it was a tier 1 deck in wild with a similar yet different list favoring an aggro strategy over midrange.
Exactly my thoughts, instead of trying to make the deck a bit better with secrets like oh my yogg ans such he just takes the 5 year old decklist and tries to win against new cards. Why mention all the support cards the archetype got over the years if you're not even putting them in your deck?
@@oskarniklas5061 Yeah I'm on the same boat. I think it would be a pretty cool series if he played the old deck, then updated it, and then played the new updated deck.
An extra effect of misterious challenger that is often forgotten was his battlecry removing 3-5 1-cost cards from your deck. As an aggro/midrange deck drawing 1 mana spells feels horrible, but after the first challenger the chances of that drop drastically.
I think it would be really cool for these kinds of videos, with archetypes that have been revisited since, if you showcased an up to date list! Since the games take place in WILD anyway, i think it would be fair to ask some wild players or check the meta vor modern versions. Tell us how the deck developed, whether Sword of the Fallen made it into the list, how it's doing in todays Wild meta, etc. Since you can't have the deck compete against modern standard decks for show, you could go for a custom game with a friend who plays a Standard meta deck, for a"fairer" fight, OR also do a game or two with a modernized list that's up to date with WILD.
100% agree with you here. not including oh my yogg in the list is sacrilege in itself. I like seeing the wild content, but if you just copy a list from 20 years ago and lose with it, the video doesn't do anything memorable or interesting.
@@danhasaplan8326 It just seems odd to me, going from a card showing off her rear and part of her leg to having a bare midriff and cleavage along with her thighs showing doesn't feel like it makes the card less sexualized... I mean yeah the pose is way more neutral but that's about it, *she's wearing less clothes than before.* It's still sexualized, but now we have a in my opinion worse looking dress and a super generic "wizard pose". They got rid of the fiery eyes too...
The old secret Paladin would lose to modern decks so too power creep however if you make a more modern secret paly aggro with mysterious challenger as the top end you can win games (no dr boom or other high drops, they suck. Modern day wild ends way to fast for them). I played a deck like that in wild and it was fun.
I'd say something that made this deck even more obnoxious that they also killed patron warrior around this time which was a really good counter against secret pally
So, I was big into Hearthstone years ago, but I've been out so long that it's a foreign country to me now (I still don't know what the hell autochess is or whether Hearthstone is a card game, an autobattler, both, or whatever now). Seeing a channel like this makes me feel weirdly nostalgic, and I appreciate you for helping an old timer like me get up to speed. Thanks.
I really enjoy the first part of these videos where you summarize the history of the archetype. Since there's crazy stuff happening in Wild I would really like it if you put a new deck list together combining all the tools the archetype got over the years. Of course the old Grand Tournament list will suck compared to the Wild meta, but can an updated list hold up? That's at least not obvious to non-Wild players.
Secret Paladin would be amazing vs control if we had more secrets like Oh My Yogg. Tax Paladin made use of the secrets with just the unnerfed sword. Having a card that puts a ton of restrictive secrets into play while having a decent attack would be something the deck wants to have.
You really should do some deck tech for these 'is this archetype still good' videos. I made a habit out of revisiting old deck archetypes with new staples and surprisingly worth it nieche additions from the newer sets. There is a lot of little kit improvements you can do to make those old archetypes a lot more viable and fun to play in the current meta. Cult neophytes and far watchposts for everyone :D
Secret Paladin was my favorite deck at the time, i reached rank 5 with that, that was my best rank EVER, i remember fighting against Face Hunter and Dragon Priest a lot.... good times
I loved Mysterious Challenger but also because I was playing the card way before it became popular. My deck was pretty bad as I was a much worse player at the time, but man having people be like, "This card sucks cuz paladin secrets suck" and "the fuck does this do?" before it became "Ew, secret pally again." Good times.
They have a Twist ranked mode right now where its a handful of selected expansions only. I dusted off Secret Paladin and am Silver 5 atm. It's doing alright.
Secret paladin was actually a powerhouse in wild for a long time, but it was not very popular. And of course, using more updated versions than this one. When I stopped playing in 2020, the deck was still tier 1 in wild, even though no one tried it
Was the first deck that I made all gold I still have my golden mysterious challengers because I cannot make myself disenchant them. boom has been disenchanted Tyrion has been disenchanted and I think that’s it I should have the entire rest of the deck still golden except for coghammer I would have to go look. It will forever be my favorite deck in Hearthstone and I will always hope for it to be revived.
Mate, i'd love to say it directly, but instead, i'm writing this comment. The thing is that there is an actual tier 1 (maybe tier 2) version of secret paladin in wild like right now. Made it to diamond 4 in few days from bronze. If you are interested -- i can send the deck code...
Secret Paladin is my worst Hearthstone trauma. The perfect combination of a powerhouse and a brainless deck, you just curve it (and you always did) and it is done, can’t fight against it.
Ice Block need a nerf or be upgraded too legendary spell. (It a toxic card) Nothing fun of winning the game then be told no (twice) then getting it stolen simple because you had no secret removal the only way to play around it. Like every secret has a way play around it but Ice block impossible play around unless you are running anti-secret. In my book you won vs that mage deck.
The gameplay was a mix of sadness from seeing a top tier deck of yore looking weak and happiness thinking back to the days of Secret Paladin and watching it get wrecked. The biggest was how STALE Blizzard let things get back then. The deck was around for 8 months without getting nerfed. Patron was nerfed, which made Secret Paladin even stronger. Perhaps a little weaker halfway through that time since League of Explorers changed things up a bit and aggro Shaman could blow it out.
Mostly because no one uses hero powers outside of Warlock and the upgrade to Warlock's hero power is pretty mediocre, so going for only odd cards is not worth it. Demon hunter and Quest hunter sometimes use it though, but it's rare for sure
one thing i dislike by his old deak plays is that he literly just plays the deack at it used to be especely when u gets to control ore tempo decks becus they can be so mutch better if he just woude sit down with a deck billder and refine the deck arce type but oh well thats not the point of this cinde of seris. Have to say though still like he does it.
I mean, you put the same list from that time, you at least needed to put some effort to create an updated version of that deck, some homebrew from you would had been nice 👍👍👍
Don't take it personally but taking very very old deck and playing it in today's wild is BS ..... you know Challenger and secret package can be build into a serviceable deck ( I am not saying the deck would be good but it would perfectly capable of winning games )
I always hate how you say x archetype is bad now see I copy and pasted a net deck of standard 5 years ago it's like no shit maybe at least try to make a wild version of the deck
Whats the point in showcasing an outdated decklist? This is some low effort content. You're not supposed to showcase how a decklist has aged, but an archetype. At least that's the vibe I get from your titles and thumbnails.
Sad you mentioned the Sword of the Fallen nerf but not the Secretkeeper nerf.

God, it feels like just yesterday Secret Pally happened.
But it's actually been so many fucking years and I feel so old.
Dude this deck single handedly got my gold pally portrait all those years ago
I did like 300 wins with him .. the rest 200 I did in a one week with baku pala XD
Same
I completely forgot about the old secret keeper card art. I forgot what was taken from us
I still wonder why they changed the card, did they loose the rights to the art from the WoW TCG or did something else happen?
@@GumshoeClassic I think it’s blizzards way of censorship they did the same to jaina portrait

Wym what happened?
This made me remember the good old days.
Would love to see mech mage or tempo mage on a video like this. Or maybe even the original set handlock.
Grand tournament created the terror that is Murlock paladin. For the first time, Palis could go aggressive consistently. It was glorious.
I returned to hearthstone after 3 years of not playing, this season and got to diamond 3 so far with a modified secret paladin deck.
Secret Paladin would be amazing vs control if we had more secrets like Oh My Yogg. Tax Paladin made use of the secrets with just the unnerfed sword. Having a card that puts a ton of restrictive secrets into play while having a decent attack would be something the deck wants to have.
I've been playing since gvg and I still think this was one of the strongest decks the game has ever seen
And it never got nerfed. Crazy
How about pirate warrior turn 3 lethal?
Main Thing that sucked with this deck Was drawing secrets 1st and never your challenger.
🤣 that's basically every deck that pulls something from the deck in any class... Exactly why I hate playing all of them

Old school secret pally was my fav deck ever. It was so fun
my favorite deck was illuminator heal mage and tree of life druid. I guess thanks for making my life hell during that time
feel it would be fun for the last game to have an upgraded version of the deck with some new cards
They have a Twist ranked mode right now where its a handful of selected expansions only. I dusted off Secret Paladin and am Silver 5 atm. It's doing alright.
It was actually the deck that got me challanger on wild after Goblins and gnomes rotated out. That was the only time i had reached legend rank lmao.
