The NEWEST DRIFT CAR EVER on Drift Week 6! 2022 Mustang S550

- Ben Hobson is a maniac and is drifting a BRAND NEW 2022 Mustang on Drift Week 6, which is insane! It is crazy enough to drift a S550 Coyote Mustang, but a BRAND NEW ONE is just crazy. But getting comfortable cars that are reliable and V8 and ready for hopping curbs is the business of Ford, so why not have them build your drift car for you lol!
Keep in mind Ecoboost models, while making less horsepower, are 200-300lbs lighter on the nose which helps the steering feel, and much cheaper than a GT. I got mine pre-pandemic for $15,000 one owner all stock 65,000 miles. The 2.3 turbo gives the same vibes as a SR or similar.
Do you still have the car a year later? How's it treating you? I'm really considering "downgrading" my daily to something much cheaper and more fun than my ATS-V. I've had a fiesta ST and driven other ford boosted cars and love the power delivery of them, but never an ecoboost mustang. Really want to stick with something RWD and want a manual car again.
After spending the whole weekend next to Ben at TandemXNights and now seeing this I'm sold. My C6 gotta go so I can be like Ben!!!!
Mustangs have been right at the balance of performance vs cost for a long time. This is a no brainer IF you don't mind driving a mustang
Fuckin hard pill to swallow.
And they make millions of them every generation. Plenty for everyone.
🤣
this video didn't age well...
I think when you say X had all these other cars and now he has chosen this. You need factor in he has done and experienced all the other cars so he's happy to have a less hassle car. Or someone wants to do fd and you say why bother it's too expensive, but you've done some fd some higher level competition. For some they need do it to see what it's like to get out of their system. I'm 45 a d when I talk to lads age 20s they want a s14, they want a corrolla, I d advise them against that, but then I had some s14s I had a corrolla. It can be interesting when you tell them how to be sensible about drifting. If they were sensible they wouldn't want to go drifting at all. Love the drift weeks love the content. I still enjoyed the smaller drift week 1 with big names and the fun challenge competitions most. I know it's not viable money wise but maybe you could bring elements of drift week 1 into drift weeks. Also there isn't too much actual footage of james deane drifting, hope that changes.
James dean has a channel and drift games has been covering james as well. Check those channels out, they are really good.
@@lemontacosauce7320 oh I know, I'm irish, I took part in one of the first drift events here when James was 14. Just be good to have a bit more, James doesn't make too much content compared to some of the other lads. My pal thinks James with get some sponsorship and be back in fd next year after the trip. Think he turned up and won 3 years in a row and left.
If the eps was perfected and it was down 200-300lbs the S550 would be a no brainer.
Ironically its weight (3,700lb) isn’t even THAT bad compared to anything else brand new…
GR Supra = 3,400lbs
Nissan “400”Z = 3,550lbs
BMW M2 G87 = 3,800lbs (!)
Are ya gonna update this since the mustang blew up?
I rode with Ben in this car and I was amazed at how good it was. Being from euro-land I thought it would be horrible but its actually a pretty good drift car
thinking of turning my 2011 5.0 into a drift car, already got coilovers and other accessories for drifting next is the angle kit, whats your opinion on the s197 chassis? Worth it or should I just get something else?
For a fun drift car it would be worth it. If you wanted to be competitive, a car with IRS would be a better choice in my opinion.
@@bigdfitness5020 I have a opportunity to trade for a ls1 swapped s14 already ready to drift, angle kit, hydro, etc etc.. But the only issue is that the person wants both of my daily drivers for it. Kinda leaning towards doing it and just driving the s14 daily lol
coming back to this 10 days later and seeing my comment.. Update on the mustang - Stolen on the 20th..
@@sidewayz_sedandamn praying for you 10 months later G 🙏 🙏 🙏
“Odi built me coils” “Vaughn got him the fun haver kit”. Looks where he is now.
The company who tunes the electric steering is called CORTEX
THANKS!
best car
All these new mustang videos are making me want to sell the 370 and get back to a mustang.. I feel i'd enjoy my 370 if it had just a bit more torque or hp to run the bigger tracks with out having to flat foot it the whole time. Also like the idea downsizing the amount of vehicles i have and just have my truck and drift/daily mustang.
I’m on the same boat, I wanted a corvette but something keeps bringing me back to the s550
@@187Tim.G vette is cool too you on the right track both of you
They do have a drift button for s550 mustang
I need this wheel and tire setup!
@benhobson I miss that white stang.
Gr86 is a lot lighter. I have a gt86 and I lovvvvvvvve it. Tires last for ever like 100 laps, hotlapping. Yes it’s under power but it’s light flickable great cars
If I didn't have my s13 definitely would want a gr86 they feel great they are low power but they move themselves around well with that being said
Ben is a beast behind the wheel!!
Video ended too soon?
I can say that the mustangs slide VERY well and smooth. I see why a lot of people crash them. I almost crashed my 18 GT admittedly when I first got it. Sometimes you don’t know your sliding or spinning. I slid it a bit and thought I had traction in second. Then when I hit 3rd, that mfr grabbed half way through and it was unpredictable. Get some drive time behind it, it’s a SUPER easy and fun car.
Cortex racing makes a plug and play harness for the electric steering rack, they say it makes it feel way better, we plan on getting that if my lady keeps her s550 mustang along with some new coilovers (feal suspension) and an angle kit (not sure which angle kit yet). IMO the s550 chassis is definitely the harder chassis to drift out of all the mustangs. I have a 04 new edge mustang which is super easy to drift, basically drifts it's self with the Jon Duncan angle kit. My lady has another mustang (08 coyote swapped), that thing is not bad to drift just needs more grip in the rear which we plan on trying to dial in soon and I'm sure it'll be much easier to slide. But her s550 has K-Sport coilovers and a bigger front sway bar and it still has a lot of body roll, that car is not that much heavier than the s197 but it's just physically bigger, my new edge looks tiny parked next to the s550 lol.
First!
Kinda reminds me of the Vette video from the PNW Drift Week. I would assume building interest helps aftermarket part support grow 👍
I want that livery soooo bad for my 2011!!! Let’s make this happen lmao
low power small tire cars going to make a comeback 😇
New cars are just so good but so heavy, that a small tire car ain’t making a comeback anytime soon. Only really that gr86
I want a GR86!
@@ItsJak3FromStateFarm They will when it costs too much to run anything else! 🥶
I drift an 03 Z4 3 liter 6 speed on 205’s is that small tire enough? Even though I want to sell it and buy a v8 e60 550 and the factory tire on one of those is 275’s
@@ItsJak3FromStateFarm I'm tempted on a more 'competitive' build as well to go down the rabbit hole but can't bring myself to it as drifting casually in a smaller car is so much less stressful haha
These things are like 3800 lbs
Yeah, so are the BMW M2!!!! Everything is so heavy now! Except that sweet little GR86! I want one.
Does drift week or a RTR kit affect his manufacturers warranty,?? 🤔🤔👍😜
How about a full vinyl wrap lol? The dealership name is on the side of the car so he is probably ok.
@Lone Star Drift you aren't gonna mention/update that this car BLEW UP because it's a ford mustang and it's garbage. Thing is brand new too.
This is inspiring
Ain't nobody paying $39k for a basic drift car they still have to modify. Drifting is turning into Nascar I swear. No more budget or cost-effective builds. All BS clickbait money burning at this point
Kinda reaching here bro. You could get a 2015 mustang gt for a lil over $20k (same car) and thats not bad for something that can keep up with some older vettes and high power 6cyl while still being a comfy, reliable daily driver.
I would interested to find out the cheapest car that can still perform well at this high speed track though.
Definitely reaching. You can buy a decent 5.0 S550 in the low to mid $20K range. This one has probably $5-6K in parts.
You get a clapped out 240 for around $5K, swap a SR or an LS, plus all the mods to be somewhat on the level of that mustang, you’re spending the same amount, if not more for a 30+ year old car that isn’t going to be as comfortable and can’t be a daily.
Well I mean you could just finance it or you just choose a cheap chassis like an e36, E46, E90, sn95, new edge, Camaro, c4, z31, G35, G37, is300, sc300/400 etc
Hell give it about 5-10 more years and you'll probably see the s550s drop below the 10k range just like the s197s
There are multiple newer mustangs bought for drift week, people do buy this stuff. We have multiple f80 m3 on the trip, lots of interesting stuff! People are building interesting and fun drift cars for these trips, and it is fun to see people without small budgets go drifting! It doesn’t mean they have more fun than someone with no budget, but it is eye catching and interesting
@@LoneStarDrift I think a lot of these kids forget that during the 90s people bought brand new s chassis/jzx cars, soarers, rx7s, etc just for drifting. It's no different today. Drifting is as expensive as you wanna make it 👍🏾
