Mine came from a cutting off of a bush - like all along a fence - in South Africa. I was told that it can cause a lot of discomfort or even kill a cat. My plant is 22 years old and I trim it to keep it manageable to lift and carry.
Thank you for sharing! I bought one little wimpy one at my local "store" like health foods thing, and it was not happy. It looked like it was on its death bed. But I was intrigued with it, and I had never seen anything like it. I thought maybe I can take it home and make it happy somehow, and if not, at least someone tried. Well to my surprise, the soil and watering and bright sunny light I placed him in, he started to turn the corner. He started perking up, but he is still a little guy. One of his buddy branches fell right out of the pot, so I started it in another one. BUT to my utter shock, both of them started taking on new baby spouts of green from the older dry-looking darker green tired branches, or whatever you are to call them. Now, he is looking pretty good. It has only been about 3 months I think. I found this great pickled poop Dr. Earth nasty plant food, that is God-awful to smell, but the plants love it! So, I am very pleased with this unique plant, and I am enjoying its transformation from Spring to Summer and watching it flourish. Maybe one day he will be as big as yours, and his brother will get bigger too? I guess there are red-orange ones too, called fire sticks? I want one of those next maybe.
I gasped when you said once a month . I have 3 and have been watering at least once a week . I’m in Houston so temperature here is high . If I change my watering schedule how do I know it needs water ?
Question the stock will you cut it and replant it even if it’s thick like a couple of inches thick?? I have cuttings I got here in Phoenix and I want to plant the cuttings they are fairly large cuttings and would like to plant them so they will be fairy large when planting any suggestions please.
Oh great. I lived in San Francisco for 20 years & have quite a few friends who have moved to Oakland. Just make sure your succulents have excellent drainage. The Pencil Cactus will do great in Oakland! Nell
I am so confused by mine. When I purchased it it was not in a container but it did seem firm. I waited a couple of weeks before planting it because I figured it had to dry out like a regular cactus that I have. Mine was dripping from the time I put it in the container here at home. I’ve read that drooping means there is too much water. But before I could even water it it was already drooping. I moved it to a more sunny spot in the house hoping that this will help.
We saved a little pencil plant two years ago. It was doing great today I noticed a lot of dried up stalks I cut all those dried up limbs off. I water this one and my big one every week about 2 oz of water. Do you think I should increase my water or repot it. I'm afraid she's dying and idk what to do.
I love this plant and my neighbor gave me like three or four cuts but it's taking too long to root, I guess it's because spring season just started and when I planted them it was back n January .
Hi how are you? I watch your videos all the time, I learn a lot is the pencil cactus the same as stick on fire? I live in Jamaica and I think I have both, now I am not sure.
I have one but I live in a basement apartment and there isn't much light. Can I take mine outside during the summer? If so, Is direct sunlight OK? I took it outside a few times before but every time it seemed to cause it to die back. The tips died and dried up. It only does that when I've taken it outside.
I'm trying to save, or salvage a pencil cactus that I gave to my sister as an indoor plant. It got very tall but also stalky with only growth at the top. I just cropped the viable tops and plan to propagate. Should I keep the mother plant, or is it basically kaput and will not produce any new growth? Thank you in advance.
I’m in Buffalo ny do you water these in winter? I’ve read no watering in winter but buffalo winters run from around November to April. Your thoughts?. Thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing these tips Nell :-) I have a small Pencil cactus about a 2 ft high, that I purchased earlier this year, I LOVE it, they are so wacky looking :-) and this video was so helpful, Sending you loads of love and plant power from Ireland for a FANTASTIC day ahead XXXXX
They are wacky, aren't they?! +heartfullofhappiness I've grown this succulent both indoors & out - always happy to share what I've learned. Waving to you across the pond from sunny California! xo Nell
I'm having trouble growing this plant I've had it four times now and planted it in succulent soil even watering only once a month smh so I have a new one, fingers crossed for a successful plamt this time😊

Can you just give it a flattop ? Instead of getting taller maybe just wider . Or will that cause it not to turn red ?
Fourth or fifth video I've watched of you on oencil cactus but nothing on how to cut them back
Are the branches stiff when it does not need water and soft when it needs water?

Thank You!
I have one about 8’ tall. Why does yours have the lighter green on it?
Mine is all the darker green.
There are two kinds.. One turns colors due to neglect. You probably have one that does not.
Great
