    Very clear and useful, thank you. Do you, anywhere in your videos, explain the difference between Merge and Unite? I can't seem to understand this.

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  11 місяців тому

      You're welcome - and thank you! When you use the Merge option, it combines the selected objects into a single shape, but it does not create a compound path. It simply merges the overlapping areas of the selected objects, discarding the overlapping parts. When you use the Unite option, it combines the selected objects into a single shape, similar to Merge. However, unlike Merge, Unite creates a compound path.

    • @GDHT

      Yes! You can draw any shape with the Pen tool, make sure it's closed, then put it on top of what you want to mask. Select both and hit CMD 7 or CTRL 7. Here's a video on clipping masks that might be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/J1hxhxw3r8E/v-deo.html

    Is there a way to take a compound path (like your last example of the top circle cutting a hole through the bottom circle leaving a donut shape) which is "viewed" as one thing, but then actually make it one path instead of a compound path? So, you would end up with the donut shape but it be only one.

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  3 роки тому

      No - Illustrator sees everything as paths. There are two paths in a donut, the outer circle and the inner circle...unless you made your donut with one line, connecting the two (which obviously would look weird). If you make them a compound path, they will behave as if they are one shape, they move together and can be colored as one shape. But you can still take your group selection tool and move either path independently.

    Hello Anne, good job! I was hoping that you could help me out. :) I'm new to the Adobe Suite of products. I have a "compound path" in my AI drawing that represents the entire outline of a human body in black color and it also includes the outlines for my sneakers and laces as part of the same compound path. I would like to color just the laces a different color than the rest of the compound path which is black. Can you advise on a way to do this using AI? I've tried a bunch of different techniques and none of them work so far. Thanks for your time and I would greatly appreciate it!

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  2 роки тому

      Thank you! Yes, with nothing selected, use your Group Selection tool to click RIGHT ON THE EDGE of the laces. It will only select the lace part. Then cut (CTRL X), deselect all, and paste in front. (CTRL F). Now you should have that piece by itself and you can recolor it without changing the whole thing.

    • @EduFUNcation
      @EduFUNcation 2 роки тому

      @@GDHT Wow, that was a really fast reply, you're amazing!! Hmmm, I did what you said ... Nothing is selected, changed to the Group Selection Tool, and clicked right on the edge of the laces and it either (1) selects the entire compound path or (2) selects the area in between the laces. It won't just select any part of the laces for me to finish the rest of your procedure. Note: This compound path has no closed areas between the individual paths, it all flows into each part of the path as one solid black line throughout the entire image. If that makes any sense ... lol!

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  2 роки тому

      Ok, I thought the laces had been punched out of another shape. You'll probably have to do something like this process: ua-cam.com/video/gyLSZIbXI0g/v-deo.html

    I have a question. I want to know why the clipping mask does not work with more than 2 layers? I mean what is the reason for it? Adobe can fix it very easily, but instead of it, why the compound path is introduced?

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  3 роки тому

      The mask needs to be only one object, otherwise, how will Illustrator be able to tell what you're trying to do? I mean, if you had multiple objects, how would it know which one to use as a mask?

    • @stupiocity245
      @stupiocity245 3 роки тому

      @@GDHT okay. I saw other videos about it. What they mean is that the bottom one act as FILL and top layer makes the shape. Compound path combines the multiple layers and see it as one. Now the doubts are cleared. Thanks for the reply instructor

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  3 роки тому

      You're welcome! Yes, the bottom one can have many objects/pieces but the top needs to be seen as 1 shape by Illustrator.
