I live in Cincinnati , along the ohio valley are streams that run down the large hills into the river. Excellent clean clay of high quality (the famous Rookwood pottery ) the colors range from grey, to blue, to yellow and orange. Someone gave me a bunch of kilns (To many kilns! I got a shed full, I need to get rid of a few!) Didn't intend to pick up a new hobby
I’m from Cleveland and I go to local creeks where there is beautiful red clay and gray clay. I might have to make a trip to Cincinnati to get some clay that you are talking about. ❤
Just let you know you need to purify it for it to be fired at high temperatures without wrecking the kiln you can probably just find some videos basically you need to dissolve it
right that clay could be rich in extremely toxic stuff and be killing her... in which might "not" even be processable... There is a reason people aren't using those clays lol.
Sounds beautiful!! I'd struggle to change anything about naturally occurring blue clay. The max I think I'd manage is very clear glaze or one as close a matching blue I could find to enhance the natural color.
umm i'd be careful because dark clays like that can be rich in lead and arsenic. what seems harmless could make you permanently ill. Red clay can be even more toxic, but technically any clay can be very toxic. I'd send a sample off for xray diffraction analysis which only costs like $30 and you'll know if you should be either processing the clay to remove toxic material or just not use it all. Black clay can contain uranium and other radioactive materials as well. Never assume its safe to use. A good indicator its toxic, nothing will grow in it. So if you've been getting sick, i'd take a triple look at the harmless cute clay i am playing with, it might very well be extremely toxic. I could go into ways to cheaply and efficiently process the clay, but there is no point in doing so depending on what is in it, as some toxic elements can get dissolved right on up with the kaolin and produce a even more toxic substance. Simple answer, get a analysis done before deciding to use it and make no mistake that plants can grow in some crazy toxic clays. There is a lot of factors to consider before playing with something, however if you're lucky then the clay will be rich in rarer metals and might produce a higher quality pottery i.e... silver rich clay which would give your pottery antimicrobial properties for food storage. KNOW WHAT YOU"RE PLAYING WITH FIRST!!! The first thing i would go and look at, what does the local surface water test out as, is it drinkable? Where i live we have toxic surface water that is associated to the arsenic sulfide rich clays. Its no joke can be VERY dangerous to play with or become extremely poisonous when firing it or after firing. SAFETY FIRST!!!
Jakestarr, this news of yours surprises me! Where are the clays with lead and uranium and such? That would definitely be something that a Potter would need to avoid. I have been processing my own clay for years here in the Connecticut River valley. Have you any info on any toxins here?
@@barrylawton7001 The local state geological survey office would have a rough idea. Realize they don't test every single pocket of clay and its more of a generalization. Also they don't generally give hand over information on anything radioactive often. Having a sample of material ran through x-ray analysis can be helpful, the clay is free after all. Just saying be safe! Play it safe! if its just high in a metal like lead, you can dissolve the kaolin up into a solution of hydrogen peroxide, dawn dish soap and water. Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide to water and a dash of soap. It will take the kaolin up like magic, like clay be gone. Anything left is metals but some metals are soluble. That would give you an idea of metal content in the clay. Its a none toxic way of getting an idea of a clays composition for tests, but arsenic travels well in water so caution should always be given. However there is no way to state that any specific pocket of clay is dangerous or not. You could have a iron rich clay deposit and then digging into it hit a slight color difference and it be rich in arsenic protected from water by the other clay. Just know what you got and go from there
Wish I could go on walks and find natural clay. My job requires I travel a lot and it makes it hard to do anything after being stuck in a truck for 5 to 15 hours a day. I paint roads in case anyone was wondering, but at least it gives me time to practice coding
Update, I got a pottery wheel and will be using it on the weekends to learn what I can, and waiting for winter when I have more time at home. In the meantime watching videos about it will have to do
I love your videos and how you make pottery with wild clay and you have given me so much inspiration from your videos and I have liked every one of them and subscribed to your channel.😃😃😃
Beautiful work, but my concern is you're inspiring more people to take from what looks like a park. Did you get permission to collect there? Most suburban people can find wild clay by diggin in their own yard. That's where I get mine.
@@BigMamaMaple I got a lecture from a park ranger for plucking a single leaf. "You're not the only person taking 'just one' leaf. You know how many people we get coming through here?" So I'm just spreading the word to get permission first.
Hi. When i come across surface clay that is processed as well as that by nature, I fill every vessel that I have. Cleaning wild clay is a lot of hard work and time.
This reminds me of being a kid and digging clay from creek beds to make little pitch pots and plates! Happy, care free times 💖
Thanks for that happy flashback. Same here. Good memory

@@lm4808 Yeah, I'll give you a couple if you want. I need to get rid of some. I work at UC I can bring them there.
Would you please let me know if you have more kilns you are willing to part with & if so, your location or area? Thank you 😊

I’ll buy one if you don’t need it 😊

@@sheaparkr i am sure baking arsenic rich clay is fun over the long term
Holy moly you’re stealing from a park or something? How is this even allowed!!!
I love this! How do you know the temperature to fire wild clay?
you can also sometimes find clay in the ocean like i did once btw it was blue

Nothing growing in clay might also mean that roots can't get water from it, meaning it's very fine
The most tricky part is to fire it, samples should help, fingers crossed!
Can You Collect More Clay? And also where did you get that clay?
I noticed you didn't refine it - I assume it cracked when you fired it, is that corect?
How to find wild clay
So very beautiful that you went on a journey and found that clay. Oh, you are so earthy abundant and free. Your art is amazing🎉
