Thank you so much for doing this one Yates, and thank you to Bee as well, who is the artist of this CAC! And now I have come full circle. Also, great timing on this one, as Konosuba S3 is out and S3 of Re:Zero recently got a trailer, which will release in October of this year! Alright so fair warning, there will be a lot of text here so if you wanna read all of this, just know it'll be a lot of time to read through So first off, remember the track Zero Luck? Yeah, I was the one that commissioned that, which started the whole track commissioning dealio for me. Ever since Yates improved a lot more after Vol 4, I was curious to see his recent take on this matchup, with a couple of different references. And man, the way the song balances the lightheartedness of Konosuba and the darker tone of Re:Zero? Honestly, this might be my new favorite of the bunch that I've comm'ed, and for good reason, like holy crap Both Konosuba and Re:Zero are one of my favorite series that I've ever experienced and man, the matchup itself being not only a thematic matchup, but one with an interesting debate absolutely sells me on the idea more and more. Also, go watch both series, they're so worth it For those that don't know, Kazuma VS Subaru is the ultimate, Number 1 Most Wanted Matchup of All Time. This matchup and the series are the most important things I really treasure. This matchup, and a few others, were what got me into the DBCommunity in the first place. If it weren't for KonoSubaru (as I like to abbreviate it), I wouldn't have met any of y'all, nor would I have started to commission matchups in the first place, since the matchup was what started this whole community thing for me. I really liked Zero Luck a hella lot. But with how Yates has improved over the years, I was extremely curious on how he would handle the track nowadays. And a bunch of y'all liked it, but wished it wasn't so Re:Zero based around it, so he decided to improve it. And honestly, he did it extremely better than last time, and man it feels like a Good Mode track, to me at least imo. But yeah once again, thank you so much Yates for doing this track the treatment it deserved, since I know you are also a huge fan of Re:Zero. And thank you so much Bee for making the track art, it looks spectacular, like holy shit. If it weren't for Konosuba and Re:Zero, Death Battle, the matchup itself and the Zero Luck commission, I wouldn't be the person that I am today. I have met so many people throughout the community, and I have created so many matchup ideas that have been popularized because of me (Osmosis/WBC, Shiki Granbell/Kat, etc.), matchups obscure, but ones that I am passionate about that I'm able to create and spread throughout the community, and I have been able to appreciate media that I wouldn't ever think to even get into. And to think that I started out just by commenting my ideas on fan made trailers, and now look where I am at. I believe that all of you that are trying to spread your ideas to the community, I believe that you WILL be able to succeed. If an insignificant person like me is able to do such a thing, I believe that YOU can as well. You just have to try, and to not give up. They became shut-in NEETs due to the people that were close to him (Kazuma's childhood love "leaving" him for someone else and Subaru had high expectations from the people around him). They have a unique attribute (High Luck stat and Return by Death) that, while very effective, doesn't change the fact that they suffer quite a lot. Despite them being weak and dying a lot, they are immortal, strategically skilled and they'll keep fighting head on

In any case, Kazuma wins even by losing because he would be delivered from his current world into a new one by Eris. So he will keep resurrecting after his possible death at the hands of Subaru
Out of all the matchups that have received a commission, this one is perhaps the most expected (along with stuff like Isaac Clarke VS Gordon Freeman). Not that I'm complaining tho, not only is it more Re:Zero/KonoSuba which I like a lot but the matchup also has so much potential on all grounds that a second part was only natural to come along. Besides, seeing a "modern" take on the matchup after Brandon's improvements over the last two years on the same matchup got me heavily curious. And boy does this song not miss. I was highly hoping that this track would go for a more "unique" style instead of the reference-heavy one that Zero Luck went for and the song did exactly that. It still manages to wonderfully mix the uplifting and energetic tones fitting KonoSuba with the more serious and dark ones befitting Re:Zero but now it does so while sounding completely unique and even better than its predecessor. I really love how this track manages to use various unconventional notes and soundbytes such as the piano notes at 0:27-0:54 or the background strings at 1:35-1:49, this makes the whole thing not only sound much more unique but it also is a great display of not just Subaru's status with his Return By Death but also Kazuma because both have in common that they're two individuals from another world that expected certain things from the new world they found themselves in only to be massively surprised when it turned out completely different to what they were expecting. So having the song fitted with all those weird and unconventional notes and soundbytes perfectly fits that theme: they're both in worlds that they don't really understand and sometimes (well, often) hate but they still push through due to sheer spite (mostly Kazuma) or determination (mostly Subaru). But that's not just it because this song manages to fit in a metric crap ton of stuff befitting both characters. I only glanced over it before but it wonderfully mixes both franchises' atmospheres and OST too. Not just on the emotional side as said earlier but also on the raw way it sounds: it does a great job mixing the more orchestral themes of KonoSuba while including the more electronic ones of Re:Zero which gives out a really appreciable combo that never feels dull and that makes the song have a great dynamic that's also doubly unique because it doesn't quite feel like both styles are fighting for control of the song but instead they mostly feel like they're playing in conjunction with one another. Which makes total sense because those two would most definitely identify with one another and be friends more so than enemies (I mean, Isekai Quartet which is as close to an official crossover between the two as it gets even dwells on it even if it mostly plays their connections as a joke), something that's especially audible near the end starting at 3:52 but more on that later. But to me, the real highlight of the song in terms of dynamic that there is here would be that one small segment at roughly 0:10 right before the "true" start of the song, more precisely what it entails. The fact that it sounds so alien and supernatural is a pretty clear indication that it's meant to fit Subaru more so than Kazuma but if it was just that I'd leave it at "that's a cool way to represent the start of the battle", instead what got my attention the most is the fact that this small segment is heard again at 2:14 right before the song "restarts" normally with a melody that was heard before in the song (at 1:08) which to me feels like an actual display of Subaru's Return By Death in song form which is simply legendary if done on purpose. It perfectly displays not only the ability itself due to the fact that the song restarts right away without a break to showcase how Subaru returns instantly upon dying and having the first time its heard be right before the beginning of the fight to showcase how Return By Death sets "checkpoints" at important crossroads in Subaru's life but it also displays Subaru's personality too because it doesn't just fully restart the song with the first chorus heard at 0:10 but it restarts the song with the second chorus heard at 1:08 to showcase how he's learned from his fight with Kazuma, allowing him to escalate the battle right away instead of going through the first bits of the fight. My only "complaint" with this absolutely legendary dynamic is that I wish it was used more than once throughout the song but I can't really complain too much given everything the song already offers (and besides, I still have one last thing to say about this soundbyte which I'll note later). That spoken of, I must also of course mention that one guitar solo at 2:29-2:56 which, while not as significant in depth character-wise, still holds quite a lot of weight and most importantly sounds absolutely amazing. The fact that it's a crescendo from start to finish that barely even goes down in notes makes it feel like a showcase of determination from both characters because after all, will it be via sheer spite against the world they were brought into or via determination to live to see another day, those two won't ever give up to keep marching on (even if it's not always for righteous ideals) so this solo fits perfectly this theme. And if I may even go further, this solo almost feels like the "true" climax to the song because of what comes after it. It's the last bit of the song that uses a new melody which also makes it feel like the last bit of the song where the battle escalates which I'd take it would be to represent the last bit of the battle where those two would be actively trying to end one another without much care for identification with one another. What I mean specifically with this is that after this solo, we get a very interesting extremely grand and epic segment that to me could easily represent a number of things but most importantly it would mean a "conclusion" to them both being antagonistic towards another because right after this we get the 3:24-3:37 segment which feels much calmer and more uplifting, as if both characters decided to put their differences aside to stop being hostile towards one another, instead reminiscing one last time about their shared traits before engaging in a final clash. Of course this dynamic doesn't really work if Subaru loses due to how his Return By Death would work meaning that the only way he'd truly "lose" would be if his spirit was shattered but that'd make the song much more different if it was displayed. Regardless, ignoring this "issue" (which isn't even really one), I really like the dynamic that the ending of this song takes. Sure it doesn't quite feel like the absolute grand and epic climax that you'd expect with how some of the other segments of the song were but I think it works even better. Because, once again, those two wouldn't finish the fight as enemies but as friends for sure so having the song take on a much more uplifting and heroic tone for its ending feels really nice, even more so since, as said before, it perfectly combines the orchestral and electronic tones of both characters starting at 3:52 which makes this identification with one another that both characters would have even more notable. But that's not it yet because even when the song "ends" at 4:21 it still keeps on giving because it actually reuses the very first melody that's heard at the very beginning of the song, only that instead of being played by a violin it's played by much more impactful and heroic sounding brass instruments that makes it feel as if, whoever won that battle, didn't just get out of it a winner but also changed for the better, much more heroic and proud than they were before. And of course the last thing that I want to note would be that final "splashing" sound heard at 4:48. Remember this great dynamic of Return By Death that I noted before that's heard at 0:10 and at 2:14 ? Yeah well I noticed that it sounds strangely like a water splashing sound put in reverse. And remember what I just called this final sound heard at 4:48 ? Exactly. And gosh do I absolutely love that as a conclusion. Not only does it still keep things neutral because it purely depends on your interpretation if you think that this actually means that Kazuma won because Subaru's "checkpoint" stopped "working" because his spirit was broken or that Subaru won because his "checkpoint" was removed due to Kazuma's death but it also is a perfect way to conclude the track, especially combined with the fact that the melody of the ending is the same as the song's start: it signifies a new start for whoever won that battle, a new "dive" into another quest of theirs now that they've completed this one. This is such a perfect way to end the track and makes me completely forgive the song for not playing on the dynamic more prior to it. Overall this track is one that does everything it should do and then a whole lot more. Not only does it simply sound amazing as a whole while mixing both characters' OSTs but it also manages to perfectly include very unique and complex depth effects that make it sound all the more unique and filled with personality. Like I said at the start, Zero Luck wasn't bad by any margin for the time it came out in, but gosh damn is Re:Start so good that they're barely comparable with one another. Of course the song fits Subaru perhaps a bit more than Kazuma but not only is this forgivable because Kazuma still has plenty of representation, it's also forgivable because the song as a whole feels like an homage if not an outright love letter to the matchup itself and the series it showcases. Which, to a certain extent, isn't extremely surprising as Re:Zero is Brandon Yates' favorite franchise as far as I know but it's still great to hear his appreciation for the source material in such a way. Absolutely wonderful job done with this for sure.
A part 2 eh??? I am very happy about this and great work as always :3 Still giving it to my boy kazuma, light novel kazuma can come back as many times as he wants similar to subaru but has WAY more hax and abilities meaning he'd be winning most of the fights and be less likely to give up. He also has soul hax to some extent which COULD bypass subaru coming back entirely- or teleport him to the death plane despite not being dead which would mean he'd be stuck and would have no way to continue the fight. TLDR: My boy Kazuma is busted fr fr
Second comment here. Kazuma vs Subaru is probably one of my favourite matchups rn. I've done scripts for it. I've debated it. And even now, it's still a matchup I adore. It's nice to see another song based on it.

This is track is so good, loved zero luck, but man this blows it out of the water, it sounds like a god mode track. Track art is awesome, it looks like a web comic crossover. The end caught me off gaurd, sounded like a septic tank

I think it depends heavily if you use anime or light novel kazuma anime kazuma has no way to continue the fight when subaru eventually finds a way to kill him ....light novel kazuma has insane level hax and can just teleport back from the real of the dead and potentially teleport OTHER people there? Not to mention soul hax with drain touch Light novel kazuma has ways to continue the fight easier, has better hax and ways to control the fight and actually has the stat advantage thanks to luck and his durability feats.

This is great. Another one after the first one. Man, when will the next season begin?! Now as for my personal take in this matchup, I think it can go either way. Subaru most definitely has the better stats in strength and speed imo, but Kazuma has more spells and abilities at his disposal that he can use to his advantage. But knowing the stuff they have to deal with, I think Subaru would more likely take it, even without Return By Death.
kazuma can dodge light based spells in the novels, so speed is actually more of a debate. Strength should go to subaru though. However kazuma later in the light novels gets the ability to teleport back from the plane of the dead at will after defeating the demon king- but he can ALSO teleport people TO it. This is important because it means neither side are really going to stay dead, but Subaru has no way out of the realm of the dead if he's teleported there while he's still alive. There's also the possibility that steal can take subaru's curse. Overall although subaru has slight advantages on a straight up fight, kazuma's intelligent fighting, dirty tactics and straight up hax SHOULD make him the only person with an actual wincon at the end of the day
@@FranTheNerdif Kazuma dodged light beams, then maybe he has a slight edge in that regard. And while i think vanishing subaru to the divine realm is a good wincon, i also think that subaru has something to win. Namely, "El Shamak" and "Al Shamak". The first one prevents action by stealing your thoughs and will to fight. And the second is more debatable, cause is BFR as well, but requires a lot of mana, and in a standart setting Subaru might not possess such quantities (also kazuma has the more effective BFR, and if he dies there somehow his soul should still go to the divine realm so.. yeah) . But, in any case, this matchup is really close and has amazing animation potencial.

Honestly if this indeed was a follow up to the first song Zero Luck, which it is, then I actually see this start after Kazuma’s resurrection by Aqua instead of Subaru using RBD. How? Well Zero Luck ends more akin to Realize, one of Re: Zero’s OP, so I can see that being when Subaru does manage to defeat Kazuma after many tries. Then it’d be a brief soundless period where Kazuma is greeted in the afterlife by Eris before he’s revived by Aqua, with Beatrice and Pastrache both soon joining Subaru, whom unbeknownst to everyone except the Goddess now has Satella’s shadow hover near him, as this song starts. Now the result depends on whenever Aqua Can exorcise Satella and stop RBD, or the Witch of Envy can deal with the Goddess… GOOD LUCK!

IMO Subaru is a far better MC than Kazuma. Meanwhile Subaru managed to become a knight, get two Witches and Oni to simp over him, one of those withes being Satella and earned the respect of some of the most broken OP characters in the Re Zero world. All of it earned through buckets of blood, sweat and tears and hard work.

Out of all the matchups that have received a commission, this one is perhaps the most expected (along with stuff like Isaac Clarke VS Gordon Freeman). Not that I'm complaining tho, not only is it more Re:Zero/KonoSuba which I like a lot but the matchup also has so much potential on all grounds that a second part was only natural to come along. Besides, seeing a "modern" take on the matchup after Brandon's improvements over the last two years on the same matchup got me heavily curious.
And boy does this song not miss. I was highly hoping that this track would go for a more "unique" style instead of the reference-heavy one that Zero Luck went for and the song did exactly that. It still manages to wonderfully mix the uplifting and energetic tones fitting KonoSuba with the more serious and dark ones befitting Re:Zero but now it does so while sounding completely unique and even better than its predecessor.
I really love how this track manages to use various unconventional notes and soundbytes such as the piano notes at 0:27-0:54 or the background strings at 1:35-1:49, this makes the whole thing not only sound much more unique but it also is a great display of not just Subaru's status with his Return By Death but also Kazuma because both have in common that they're two individuals from another world that expected certain things from the new world they found themselves in only to be massively surprised when it turned out completely different to what they were expecting. So having the song fitted with all those weird and unconventional notes and soundbytes perfectly fits that theme: they're both in worlds that they don't really understand and sometimes (well, often) hate but they still push through due to sheer spite (mostly Kazuma) or determination (mostly Subaru).
But that's not just it because this song manages to fit in a metric crap ton of stuff befitting both characters. I only glanced over it before but it wonderfully mixes both franchises' atmospheres and OST too. Not just on the emotional side as said earlier but also on the raw way it sounds: it does a great job mixing the more orchestral themes of KonoSuba while including the more electronic ones of Re:Zero which gives out a really appreciable combo that never feels dull and that makes the song have a great dynamic that's also doubly unique because it doesn't quite feel like both styles are fighting for control of the song but instead they mostly feel like they're playing in conjunction with one another. Which makes total sense because those two would most definitely identify with one another and be friends more so than enemies (I mean, Isekai Quartet which is as close to an official crossover between the two as it gets even dwells on it even if it mostly plays their connections as a joke), something that's especially audible near the end starting at 3:52 but more on that later.
But to me, the real highlight of the song in terms of dynamic that there is here would be that one small segment at roughly 0:10 right before the "true" start of the song, more precisely what it entails. The fact that it sounds so alien and supernatural is a pretty clear indication that it's meant to fit Subaru more so than Kazuma but if it was just that I'd leave it at "that's a cool way to represent the start of the battle", instead what got my attention the most is the fact that this small segment is heard again at 2:14 right before the song "restarts" normally with a melody that was heard before in the song (at 1:08) which to me feels like an actual display of Subaru's Return By Death in song form which is simply legendary if done on purpose.
It perfectly displays not only the ability itself due to the fact that the song restarts right away without a break to showcase how Subaru returns instantly upon dying and having the first time its heard be right before the beginning of the fight to showcase how Return By Death sets "checkpoints" at important crossroads in Subaru's life but it also displays Subaru's personality too because it doesn't just fully restart the song with the first chorus heard at 0:10 but it restarts the song with the second chorus heard at 1:08 to showcase how he's learned from his fight with Kazuma, allowing him to escalate the battle right away instead of going through the first bits of the fight.
My only "complaint" with this absolutely legendary dynamic is that I wish it was used more than once throughout the song but I can't really complain too much given everything the song already offers (and besides, I still have one last thing to say about this soundbyte which I'll note later).
That spoken of, I must also of course mention that one guitar solo at 2:29-2:56 which, while not as significant in depth character-wise, still holds quite a lot of weight and most importantly sounds absolutely amazing. The fact that it's a crescendo from start to finish that barely even goes down in notes makes it feel like a showcase of determination from both characters because after all, will it be via sheer spite against the world they were brought into or via determination to live to see another day, those two won't ever give up to keep marching on (even if it's not always for righteous ideals) so this solo fits perfectly this theme. And if I may even go further, this solo almost feels like the "true" climax to the song because of what comes after it. It's the last bit of the song that uses a new melody which also makes it feel like the last bit of the song where the battle escalates which I'd take it would be to represent the last bit of the battle where those two would be actively trying to end one another without much care for identification with one another.
What I mean specifically with this is that after this solo, we get a very interesting extremely grand and epic segment that to me could easily represent a number of things but most importantly it would mean a "conclusion" to them both being antagonistic towards another because right after this we get the 3:24-3:37 segment which feels much calmer and more uplifting, as if both characters decided to put their differences aside to stop being hostile towards one another, instead reminiscing one last time about their shared traits before engaging in a final clash. Of course this dynamic doesn't really work if Subaru loses due to how his Return By Death would work meaning that the only way he'd truly "lose" would be if his spirit was shattered but that'd make the song much more different if it was displayed. Regardless, ignoring this "issue" (which isn't even really one), I really like the dynamic that the ending of this song takes. Sure it doesn't quite feel like the absolute grand and epic climax that you'd expect with how some of the other segments of the song were but I think it works even better.
Because, once again, those two wouldn't finish the fight as enemies but as friends for sure so having the song take on a much more uplifting and heroic tone for its ending feels really nice, even more so since, as said before, it perfectly combines the orchestral and electronic tones of both characters starting at 3:52 which makes this identification with one another that both characters would have even more notable.
But that's not it yet because even when the song "ends" at 4:21 it still keeps on giving because it actually reuses the very first melody that's heard at the very beginning of the song, only that instead of being played by a violin it's played by much more impactful and heroic sounding brass instruments that makes it feel as if, whoever won that battle, didn't just get out of it a winner but also changed for the better, much more heroic and proud than they were before.
And of course the last thing that I want to note would be that final "splashing" sound heard at 4:48. Remember this great dynamic of Return By Death that I noted before that's heard at 0:10 and at 2:14 ? Yeah well I noticed that it sounds strangely like a water splashing sound put in reverse. And remember what I just called this final sound heard at 4:48 ? Exactly. And gosh do I absolutely love that as a conclusion. Not only does it still keep things neutral because it purely depends on your interpretation if you think that this actually means that Kazuma won because Subaru's "checkpoint" stopped "working" because his spirit was broken or that Subaru won because his "checkpoint" was removed due to Kazuma's death but it also is a perfect way to conclude the track, especially combined with the fact that the melody of the ending is the same as the song's start: it signifies a new start for whoever won that battle, a new "dive" into another quest of theirs now that they've completed this one. This is such a perfect way to end the track and makes me completely forgive the song for not playing on the dynamic more prior to it.
Overall this track is one that does everything it should do and then a whole lot more. Not only does it simply sound amazing as a whole while mixing both characters' OSTs but it also manages to perfectly include very unique and complex depth effects that make it sound all the more unique and filled with personality. Like I said at the start, Zero Luck wasn't bad by any margin for the time it came out in, but gosh damn is Re:Start so good that they're barely comparable with one another. Of course the song fits Subaru perhaps a bit more than Kazuma but not only is this forgivable because Kazuma still has plenty of representation, it's also forgivable because the song as a whole feels like an homage if not an outright love letter to the matchup itself and the series it showcases. Which, to a certain extent, isn't extremely surprising as Re:Zero is Brandon Yates' favorite franchise as far as I know but it's still great to hear his appreciation for the source material in such a way. Absolutely wonderful job done with this for sure.
A Part 2 makes me wonder if a Return By Death happened. Well then this isekai matchup continues with another stellar track.

Still giving it to my boy kazuma, light novel kazuma can come back as many times as he wants similar to subaru but has WAY more hax and abilities meaning he'd be winning most of the fights and be less likely to give up. He also has soul hax to some extent which COULD bypass subaru coming back entirely- or teleport him to the death plane despite not being dead which would mean he'd be stuck and would have no way to continue the fight.

Now as for my personal take in this matchup, I think it can go either way. Subaru most definitely has the better stats in strength and speed imo, but Kazuma has more spells and abilities at his disposal that he can use to his advantage. But knowing the stuff they have to deal with, I think Subaru would more likely take it, even without Return By Death.
kazuma can dodge light based spells in the novels, so speed is actually more of a debate. Strength should go to subaru though. However kazuma later in the light novels gets the ability to teleport back from the plane of the dead at will after defeating the demon king- but he can ALSO teleport people TO it.
This is important because it means neither side are really going to stay dead, but Subaru has no way out of the realm of the dead if he's teleported there while he's still alive.
There's also the possibility that steal can take subaru's curse. Overall although subaru has slight advantages on a straight up fight, kazuma's intelligent fighting, dirty tactics and straight up hax SHOULD make him the only person with an actual wincon at the end of the day

And while i think vanishing subaru to the divine realm is a good wincon, i also think that subaru has something to win. Namely, "El Shamak" and "Al Shamak". The first one prevents action by stealing your thoughs and will to fight. And the second is more debatable, cause is BFR as well, but requires a lot of mana, and in a standart setting Subaru might not possess such quantities (also kazuma has the more effective BFR, and if he dies there somehow his soul should still go to the divine realm so.. yeah) . But, in any case, this matchup is really close and has amazing animation potencial.

Honestly if this indeed was a follow up to the first song Zero Luck, which it is, then I actually see this start after Kazuma’s resurrection by Aqua instead of Subaru using RBD.
How? Well Zero Luck ends more akin to Realize, one of Re: Zero’s OP, so I can see that being when Subaru does manage to defeat Kazuma after many tries.
Then it’d be a brief soundless period where Kazuma is greeted in the afterlife by Eris before he’s revived by Aqua, with Beatrice and Pastrache both soon joining Subaru, whom unbeknownst to everyone except the Goddess now has Satella’s shadow hover near him, as this song starts.

IMO Subaru is a far better MC than Kazuma. I mean, I feel like Kazuma is just too much of a dick and hasn't had much character growth, plus he's extremely lazy and expects everything to be handed to him. And people call him a chad? HA!
