You should have demonstrated this claim that the Vaseline prevents fogging. Surely this could not have been too difficult to demonstrate. Why didn't you demonstrate this?
I removed the windshield from my vehicle, because I got tired of cleaning it every other day and later noticed it was my eye glasses, I wish I had seen this post long before. Thanks for this genius life hack.
I am a retired ABOC certified optician im here to tell you that putting a petroleum based product on some lens coatings will be a costly mistake. Most coatings like anti reflective coatings if cleaned with proper products will not fog up anyway.
dont do this its bad advice, vaseline is petroleum based and weakens most plastics and rubbers vinyls etc unless they are specially made to withstand petrol products such as car tyres and plastic used in engine bays and under the car those are ok, but glass frames and other day to day item will become brittle or just totally fail, use just neat fairy washing liquid instead and polish it off with a dry cloth, it does almost the same job without destroying plastics etc
It also works with all kinds of dirt or oil. Simply put dirt on your glasses and remove it with a soft tissue to make your glasses clean again. Mindblowing indeed...
It's better to use superglue combined with cement, add a little toothpaste with baking soda and a tea bag, then apply the mixture to clean your glasses.
Thanks a hairy bunch!!! I’m at the hospital!! once I put the Vaseline on the lens I couldn’t see where I put them … I sat down and they slipped right up my glASS end!! Maybe it would be sensible for you to state not to do this in the nude 😢
Any petroleum products which are used on plastic or acetate glasses surface will damage it in and also feel safe to carefully wipe it with clean clothes later on and waste your time because it would have collected a thick layer of dust
25 years in optics....dawn does work but you wouldn't want to use it exclusively. Depending on how the lenses were manufactured will determine the coatings put on the lenses. Why risk it when actual lens cleaner is inexpensive
Serious question: I have some of what would technically be called Denatured Alcohol... it's about 75% Methanol and Ethanol with 25% water... would you recommend using that on my Leupold scope?
@derekbilderoy7162 it does. I had to have a brand new pair of glasses repaired because I cleaned the lenses with dishwashing liquid. If you have a coating on your glasses, I wouldn't take the risk.
@@dizzylizzy7582 I used eyeglass wipes until an optometrist informed me, they were damaging my glasses. No one's mentioned this before ,I have all the coatings, and as someone who has needed glasses since the fourth grade, I'm an old lady 👵, it was quite a surprise. The optometrist recommended using warm water, not hot, along with dish soap and a lint-free cloth, such as my husband's T-shirt or microfiber cloths. Following this advice, my glasses have lasted two years so far.👓 🧐
this also works awesome for contact lens, just dont mind the pain from your eyeballs being attacked by the chemicals in the vaseline, it's just cleaning the surface for 20/20 vision.
Actually, petroleum gel is one of the cleanest you can use on your body. No chemicals in it at all. Not much can grow in it either. Perfectly fine to use on eyeballs. Check dry eyes ointment. Not your contact lenses tho.
That's why you gotta add a little Super Glue into the mix. The Petroleum products will stick to the Super Glue. Once you've removed the Petroleum/Super Glue mixture off of your lenses, then all you have to do is go to the Optometrist and get a new pair of glasses.... Bamm... Brand Spanking New.... Works all the time.
Make-up foundation works better than Vaseline. Just get any drugstore foundation with titanium oxide as an ingredient, saturate your glasses, let sit anywhere from 30m to overnight in the liquid, then get out your microfiber cloth that was included in your glasses case, and buff until your glasses sparkle! Also works with sunscreen. 👍
Putting a hydrophobic coating will actually make fogging worse, not better. This is why you should never wax the inside of your car's windshield. If for some reason you still want to do this, use actual car wax. It'll last much longer.
Anti-fog products don’t work, waste of money. I’ve read about using shaving foam; a drop of baby shampoo. My optician said having the glasses too high causes fog, (I’m extremely hot-natured & humid climate) however that’s where I see better. So, I’ll give this a try. Thank you. 👍
I do this same hack, but with greasy foods like fried chicken. I take my glasses off while eating and just smear them all over the chicken. Then, I wipe the grease away on my shirt. This leaves a thin protective coat on my lenses that my pets really enjoy licking when I fall asleep on the couch.
i applied w,up liquid onto windows to rid of condensation and there was just a bit of condensation . just a tiny drop on a dry j.cloth does half a normal size window and wipe off with another j.cloth . i shall do that on my car windows and my glasses too hence it may be the same effect as vaseline both items work .

Oh and btw dish soap is perfectly fine both on your glasses and parts of your car if applied correctly and at the opportune time that calls for it followed by other means of you know long term protection, like making sure you wiped it all off 😂
Sent this vid to a co-worker to try out as a guinea pig JIC it resulted in issues. Bad move. Apparently he'd never heard of vaseline and got a bit carried away using it. interesting trick, but I have to comment on one thing which is NEVER put your fingers directly on your lenses. Microfiber cloths aren't that expensive, just use them at each stage.
Clearly some clowns who can't follow instructions but just to say, washing up liquid alone does the same job. Apply and buff off. Used on helmet visors for 30+ years and inside my old cars windscreens too. True, it can and will cause "star burst" effects if you don't put enough effort into buffing it off. Any petroleum/oil based product isn't the best thing to apply to a visual optic.

That will also prevent them from fogging.

Wipe off excess Vaseline

Agreed. This guy is brainless
Also, washing-up liquid with lemon scent contains limonene, which tends to be not so plastic-friendly either in undiluted form.
Silicone lubricant if anything

Best to lightly sand the lens first with 1200 wet/dry paper for the Vaseline to stick .

I use Vicks vapor rub during the cold and flu season.
If you have a coating on your glasses, don't use dish washing soap. It ruins the coating. Been there, done that.
Wouldn’t Vaseline cause dust and airborne particles to collect on the lenses?
It doesn't. I used dish washing soap for over 8 years on a pair of glasses and the coatings were still functional.
@derekbilderoy7162 it does. I had to have a brand new pair of glasses repaired because I cleaned the lenses with dishwashing liquid. If you have a coating on your glasses, I wouldn't take the risk.
Can't say this was never true but it certainly is not true with modern coatings on glasses.

Shaving-creme would be a MUCH better solution; less messy.
THIS IS EXACTLY RIGHT!!!
I'm gonna try it. Don't wear contacts every day so this sounds great.
Shaving gel applied in the same way then allowed to soak awhile before buffing stops fogging and repels water from glasses and visors too.
I’m gonna stick to barbsol shave cream, cleans and polishes in one step, leaving my glasses lenses fog and rain resistant
