  • Alex Tree of Niebisch & Tree harps reassembles the external mechanism of an Erard Gothic pedal harp.
The neck of this beautiful spiral Erard Gothic sadly had to be replaced, which means removing, and then refitting the action to the new neck. Unlike modern pedal harps Erards have an external mechanism which operates the natural discs of the lower octaves of the harp. this mechanism is threaded through the wood of the neck itself, which means it has to be removed before the action can come off. The discs are attached to the main mechanism with small hand made taper pins, which on some early harps haven't been touched in over two hundred years. As you can imagine you have to take a lot of care when removing and refitting them.
