  • In our second video from Sai Kung we explore the town and backstreets. This walk winds through narrow, pedestrian-only alleys past playgrounds, shrines, and public squares on an extremely hot summer's day.
Sai Kung has long been one of my favorite parts of Hong Kong, and feels like a completely different place to city most people imagine, decked with high-rises and street canyons flanked by tower blocks and malls. It's vibrant with a range of functional staples and bougie businesses, and offers something for everyone, and, while the town is mostly known for its picturesque seafront, the urban area itself is full of charm and character.
I'm told that the scaffolding that was being brought down around 22:00 minutes in followed the local Tin Hau in May. I arrived too late to capture any of that, sadly, but you can still see a bit of the decorations and the immense scale from the dismantled bamboo. I also really really like the street art at 29:07 (by Simplebao on Instagram). And one more thing: Those bells you see like the one at 31:37 ? Those actually mark out where the seafront used to be before land reclamation joined Sai Kung and Sha Tin, and are a dedication to Tin Hau.
