When you least expect it,"EXPECT IT!" That is just the way it goes. You can land a 48" pike hooked in the lip edge & next time the lure or bait maybe half way to its ass! Always have a few leaders made up. You can just open the snap & put on another. You can get your lure back when you clean it,which I've done many time.
@notagain8661 creek chubs are literally everywhere..bait guys and myself get em from local rivers on a regular basis...absolutely nothing special about em!
I use 50lb mono filament & barrel knots & snap swivels at both ends for 24" leader. Gold snap for sure at the bait or lure end & black at the upper. They go near invisible in the water where wire & cable does not, so less fear & less wild miss strikes at shiny colors where you dont want them. The gold snap adds to appeal at bait or lure end,the like gold best. I still check these leader often for abrasion, those northern pike have very sharp fine bed of teeth that is very destructive & meant to snag, cut & hang on to prey fish though scales & all. Very destructive to any line. The 50lb mono let's baits, spinners, flatfish & spoons have a better more natural action than metal leaders.Besides, 2 foot metal leaders are not common.
Ok,broke you off like a Northern will certainly do. We have monsters near me,I'm experienced with that problem on light tackle. I have questions? What lb test? What strength & length leader? If I knew I could put you in the ball park for possible size. It obviously inhaled it to ingest all your leader & get its teeth on your line. I have gotten so,I use long homemade leaders of 50lb mono 24" long with 40lb snap swivels at both ends, because that has happened so many times on shorter leaders. It takes a 36" pike to reach past a 12" leader on average some time 30",depends on the strike & swallow. I've caught 36" northerns with teeth mark rings & missing scales in the smack middle at the 18" mark. So no,18" might not be enough? These clunkers inhabit the same waters as all the other fish & you never know when that will happen or on what bait? For instance I was fishing trout stream side in april with spinners & hook & garden worms in very cold waters, just after ice off. Wasnt even night crawlers, was too cold to find them so just dug garden worms from sod clumps. 8lb test 1 foot eagle claw pre leadered snelled hook when it happened. I almost had that bastard landed creek side not 4 feet away & 1 big KICK & SNAP AS ITS BACK BROKE THE WATER'S SURFACE. LETS try 5 foot (60" or so) its side was as wide as a salmon. My motto - when you least expect it, "EXPECT IT!!!"
Not a forward facing sonar in sight, love it!
