- Brad Mehldau performs his "Waltz for J. B." from the box set '10 Years Solo Live,' available now on Nonesuch Records:
4-CD set: www.nonesuch.co...
iTunes: smarturl.it/10Y...
"Walts for J. B." was recorded at Castello degli Ezzelini, Bassano del Grappa, Italy, on July 15, 2010
My mind have never been this quiet. Glad that I went through my friend's playlist to find this gem.
Ouça Antônio Carlos Jobim, Joe Henderson and Pat Metheney em desafinado.
Brad never gets too churchy with those lower chord voicings; dissonance, tension when expecting a comforting set of floorboards. There's a somewhat familiar scaffold there, sure -but then you see the traffic on the street way below your feet - forty stories down. So great.
love this comment... forty stories down... phew. breathless.
I cry every time I hear this. The most beautiful rendition of this song ever recorded.
you are not alone
What song does this sound like?? I can’t put my finger on it
One song it sounds like is Don't be Sad by Brad Mehldau@@ModernVince
This Man is from the other planet....magic pianism!!!!
And is coming one more time to play in lisbon.. what a joy!...
Mais aussi de notre terre pour qu on le bonheur de se régaler du jeu de ce pianiste hors norme
Saw Brad last night, 03/28/24, at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Az. This was his encore tune. Truly this generation's story telling pianist. He can play the entire "American Songbook". What touch and feel..
I was there too! great show
it relieves me so much... whenever i feel ill, the music is the best pill for me. have a nice day to every music lover.
I love that change from minor to major in the A chord
One of the most beautiful ballads I've ever heard...
Masterpiece.
J.B. Just Beautiful
José Menezes better comment !!!!
Jack Black is a lucky man, having such a great Song dedicated to him!
Ok, that’s a good note!
And I thought it was for Justin Bieber
For Jon Brion…
maybe for Joe Biden ?😂
Emotion drops every note. Brad is great.
You cannot go wrong with Brad and his piano musicianship!
Grandissimo Mehldau!!
Deepest jazz pianist ever. One of those reasons to be alive.
listen to bill evans man , its more fucking deep boy
rémi trudel bellemare I don’t think this is more or less deep. They are both great reasons to be alive! Haha
I personally think that Brad Mehldau and Keith Jarret, in their prime, have more beautiful voice leading than Evans. I guess it's personal taste.
Deepest jazz pianist ever is Bill Evans. Then Keith Jarrett ...
I think if you’re, say, younger than 65 years old, then Bill Evans is probably harder to appreciate than Jarrett or Mehldau. I’m 59, and I grew up hearing cocktail pianists who had copped Bill Evans’ stuff. And so when I first heard “Live at the Village Vanguard,” expecting to be deeply moved, I thought, “Well, he sounds like a very good cocktail pianist.” I didn’t start to appreciate him until I started to dig into his music (as a player). Now I “get it”-I know why he is revered. But his music doesn’t excite me as much as Jarrett’s or Mehldau’s.
I stumbled upon this by accident. Such a cool and cute little waltz!
Happy, sad, calm everything included in one song
One of the best piano interpretations right now in the world. So deep and beautiful.
Un musicien sublime
Está canción me ha salvado muchísimas veces. Gracias por despejar mi mente.
just beautiful
Wow! Beautiful! Thank you for this
Lovely. Really.
Suonar magicamente
So good
Beautiful track which somehow remember passages from Vangelis's Memories of Green.
this is the best comforting thing ever
Masterpiece
Love it
J&B is my whisky. Comme lui t’as vieilli Brad, n’en étant que meilleur ;))
What a got dang perfect new year's eve jangle
Excelente ❤
It's dedication to musical sensibility. Be it JB or our beloved MB, Michael Brecker. Doesn't matter . The source and the reception is the same.
Great waltz for J.B.
OH I KNOW WHAT THIS SOUNDS LIKE. The piano in J. Coles “She Knows”
I’m not sure if it’s the melody or progression, but the back drop piano that repeats in this piece is the same, just amplified, in J. Cole’s song
Sublime
This song heavily reminds me of his other song Don't Be Sad. Anybody feel the same way?
+Ultin Akeley Yes, his own influence!
Yes!
honestly reminds me of "song song" off of art of the trio 3
It kinds of reminded of "Just The Two of Us" by Bill Withers in the beginning.
It's in the relative major of "Song-song" (so, it's kind of like the major version of "Song-song" even though it has the same bittersweet vibe to it) and uses the same harmonic technique, that is the oblique motion of the lower voice whilst the rest of the voicing remains in the same range.
at last! an official version!
***** i had gotten used to the "jazz à vienne 2010" version so much though :-/
***** me too! but i really like this one! the jazz a vienne concert audio really upsets me... its beyond compressed.
its so nice that he dadicated a tune to such a young musician Justin Bieber
Jajajajajaaja
lol
Justin Bieber even wrote Waltz? I didn't know, what a genius he is!
hahahahahhahahahaha!
hahah :)
Today J>B. would be 55....found this performance-dedication lately today....nice one!

I always thought about Johannes Brahms, as he's a huge fan
You're so right... this really sounds like Jon Brion. Thanks for saying that
No, it’s for Jean Benjamin
No, it's for James Bond
No, it’s for James Brown.

That's for John Bonham. Amazing drummer!
That’s just Brad showing his love for Jeb Bush
LOL .. good one.
Lol this is the best one.

♥
its for jon brown, back to back 4th place in olympic marathon, what a tragedy
Thanks, Gov. Jerry Brown.
I'd imagine that JB = Johannes Brahms as in 'John boy' from 'Highway rider' album
+Adrian Colborne I believe it's actually for Jeff Buckley :)
its for jon brown, twice 4th in the olympic marathon.
cool
nah it's jon brion. the harmony is legit the same on this song as a lot of jon's stuff (always on the dom2).
Big ups to the late, great James Brown. I got ants in my pants and I need to dance. YOWWW!!!!!!!

My contribuition will be: Waltz for J Balvin

Only Keith Jarrett can match Meldau's piano soul. The people who disliked this thought it was a tribute song to Justin Bieber.
More like only Mehldau can match Jarret's piano soul tbh.
Just shows you all the idiots to think Justin Bieber
nice wsjournal article
nice, tony and jack, just the name
does anybody have the transcription for this tune?
yes i have
+Pierre DE WAILLY how did you get it?
You can find this one and other mehldau's transcriptions on Scribd, it's a free app.. have a good day
lol Owen, that " basically" happens only in the beginning, the rest of the song can't be described as "basically" because it's a nice and complex harmonization.
Is only to be outdone when Brad plays it live.
Note the title of the CD.
Just listened this live today in Paris. Mesmerised, still under his magic!
Maybe related to the fact that I'm Junior Bantam weight.
5.15 top
Instead of making suggestions for the meaning of JB,ask a question. You can ask him.Meanwhile enjoy the music.
It's for the scotch.

+Mike Hawk or jeff ballard
+Jakob Zimmermann Jim Beam
+Jakob Zimmermann Pretty certain it's Johannes Brahms. Mehldau performs pieces by Brahms elsewhere in this same box set.
