I am so nostalgic listening to Dan's voice and the commercials from a time and place that I existed in and no longer do. Looking back these times of my youth I see they were fleeting. What I would give to just have the chance to go back in time just to relive them again. But since that is impossible I am glad I get to listen now and remember with great fondness, Dan, his humor, his place in my adolescence and of course the times themselves. Dan, if you ever read this I want you to know that you were a wonderful DJ and influence and I will always remember you with respect and affection. Thank you.
Growing up in the late 50's through 60's 77 WABC was THE station to listen to and Big Dan was the man. Great memories...too bad we can't turn back the clock.
I joined ReelRadio and WABC Musicradio and many holidays I feel like I am back at Wagner College on Staten Island, 1964-1968...even watching the lights and the music go out at WABC! The whle "crew" of Dan, Cuz, Ron, HOA, and so many more were all at the #1 AM radio station WABC...gogogogogo! I did find it amusing that Dan did not like many of the PAMS he helpped play. He did a seg on this fact when the PAMS bigwigs were visiting the station. Priceless!!
@pcimmino I also have a great Charlie Greer one from 10-03-65 (30 min), complete with that WABC reverb and all. I have lots of old WABC airchecks, some of which I bought a long time ago, and others I recorded off of the internet. Too bad we can't...I have tons of airchecks from all over. What a great period for creativity in commercials, radio entertainment and music. Creating a non-stop exciting show with short songs is a lot of work, which radio today is pretty much Bland and Boring.
I remember staying up late at night to tune in 77 WABC to hear Cousin Brucie. It was lights out in my house around 10 on school nights so the radio was under the blanket with me! No headphones at that point in time! It was great hearing the awesome jocks on all the clear channel 50KW AM stations (not the "Clear Channel Monopoly of today) like WOWO Fort Wayne, WLS Chicago, and WABC! Awesome! That was when radio was king...sadly the music has died. Radio is dead in the USA....
I was in third grade back in March of '66. However, I didn't start listening to Top 40 radio until that fall (1966), when WFIL was THE station here in Philadelphia.
@pictureisup1 Music Radio WABC was alive. It was community orientated. They had the Best radio talent, the music was all tip top. The commercials are fun and often read by the on air personality. The commericals actually made me want to check out the product. Dan Ingram is the best EVER. It sounds like it's from a completely different planet, like the planet FUN, doesn't it.
15 in 66 grew up in Jersey. WABC transmitters in Lodi..... signal could be heard in many places.... on the telephone table lamp or wind up toy Bobaloo I remember when Frankies Market burned down. saw flames from window... lived right by rt46 in Lodi back then...on Sidney St
To commenter NANLISA never to come back on the airwaves will be what you described as back then (mid 60s early 70s) when you constantly heard the name:AMERICAN RADIO or a jingle: WABC ALL AMERICAN!!! Demographics change, beliefes change (that is whatever is pounded into our populations minds are advising them) and the 99% heartfelt feelings written into the fabric of just what that song we just heard was all about!!!! That,s all **********
I used to pick up WABC right here in Philadelphia. That's when radio was worth listening to. Nowadays, radio stinks! The music is terrible, there are too many nationally syndicated radio shows, and there are no radio personalities with personality and a sense of humor. I'm so glad that I grew up during the 60's.
@pictureisup1 Sad, yes, and boring too. I just love those 10 minute commercial sweeps! lol I hate new music anyway, the commercials suck, so why bother listening? I have lots of airchecks here to keep me listening until i leave this planet.
@sniperssg12 I used to listen to WOWO a long while ago...WLW in cincy back in the early to mid 80s for their Hot Wax weekends. When I took my road trip to South Dakota in 2002, we listend to KOMA in OKC, OK.
Thanks, I didn't want to rush it through. This aircheck was scoped and restored by someone else, and I am just promoting it for what it is. If anybody loves these old airchecks, I see no reason not to tell everyone about the great website it came from and the more people that know about it, the better.
@sniperssg12 Some think a digitized xm/SIRIUS signal is what it is all about. But we AM faithful ( I was in S.Jersey where it would rarely come in at night) and when I went to Wagneron Staten Island in 1964 I was in heaven..Ingram, Morrow,Lundy,Anderson,Greer and so many others. Thanks to Reelradio it's still here!
@partyspecialists Radio sucks today. To me, music isn't exciting, the commercials suck, etc..Dan Ingram, not my favorite, but in the Top 30. He was good though. Real Don Steele, Charlie Greer, Dick Kemp, Jackson Armstrong, Chuck Knapp, Rick Shaw, BMR, Tiger Bob Raleigh (Bill Miller-1966) and a few other ones. If I forgot any others, it's that I am rushed at the moment and don't have the time.

Tango Eliott Yes they didn't play 10 commercials in a row then, and sadly that's not an exaggeration.

This is from a different time. Radio is so much different today. Very sad!
man, I miss this type of AM format so bad. The DJs were as much fun as the music
this is from 03-26-66. Please note.

Much cooler back then; music, radio, DJs, TV, ads. The intro of the Stones tells it all, excitement!!

nanlisa Me too in Levittown
Today's radio stinks is right!
Amen!
I Think WABC-AM 770 Should Have Stayed a Top-40 Rock And Roll Station Until May-1990 And Maybe Have It Simulcast On 95.5 FM.

MONO VINYL RECORDS, AM RADIO,BLACK AND WHITE TV, 3 TV STATIONS, NEWS AT 6 AND 10 PM ONLY BABY!
@monkeeman1966 There were the reason I wanted to go into radio and acting.
I have a Marshak aircheck from July 1969, and all they do is play that commercial.
March 26, 1966 Was a Saturday.
The Velvet Voice, DJ Vaughn Harper ranks among the very best in radio.

Great
@sniperssg12 How is it possible? You can't be 21 then. WABC ended what, 29 years ago(the music portion). You have to be older than 21.
LOVE that re-verb!
